What was GF thinking with the Festival Plaza?

It's a total downgrade from the PSS. Unlike the PSS which was easy, convenient and simple to use we got the FP which is cumbersome, wastes time and just a pain to do simple tasks. I loved the PSS in ORAS.

1. Maybe they thought that online being on for extended time would kill your battery, so it was coffined into a place where you can do a few fun activities while you connect.
2.Also, they were experimenting on how to go back to one screen, so a lower screen which updates constantly was a no-go.

The strange thing about the Festival Plaza is that it's set up more like a minigame feature than a player connecting system. I'd almost think the interconnectivity features just got shoehorned into Festival Plaza because there wasn't enough room, but I don't think that's the reason.

There's already been XY and ORAS on the 3DS, not to mention all the other non Game Freak games that connect to others. Why would they suddenly reach that conclusion?

Wouldn't that involve more time connected, not less?

Testing for a game on the switch would be done in the beta testing of that game, not in the final product of a game on a completely different system. USUM is still on the 3DS, too, so it wasn't like they were getting ready for the next game.

-SM has a more complicates engine that makes the game run slower, maybe online would make it worse.
-In XY, you can be online pretty much all the time, whereas in SM you can connect, visit a few places, and then disconnect and going back to what you were doing.
-When the game was released, a lot of people noted the dimished use of the second screen, which was used as evidence for Stars.

You can turn off online in XY. You can stay online for long periods of time with SM. There's not really much of a difference.

And we've seen how that rumor turned out, haven't we?

The second screen is still used for the battle menu, for Poke Pelago, for opening the menu, to give a map, for Pokemon Refresh, and for the bag and party, among other things. Apart from the PSS, what exactly was diminished?

Who knows if people would have been smart enough to turn off internet if it's killing the battery and the frame rate.

Also, look at Z, just because the main theory died doesn't mean that its arguments did too, we got a cell sidequest anyway, a Switch game is coming soon.

I don't want to convince you of anything, but unless the guys in charge of the Festival plaza knew nothing about the PSS, the fact is that Game Freak decided that online should be played outside the main world.

It's really not that hard to turn off internet? And I'm pretty sure it doesn't affect framerate.

A cell quest is not the same as a whole game dedicated to Zygarde, and the eventual move to the Switch isn't the same as a sister game on a different console. And as I said before, Sun and Moon aren't even the last games on the 3DS. Why would they try to get players used to only one screen if they had another game coming that used two?

Festival plaza isn't "outside the main world", you can still access it anywhere. It's got unnecessary steps added in, but it hasn't restricted where online play can occur.
(also, you're contradicting yourself-if you don't want to convince me of anything, why are you claiming this is a fact?)

It's outside Alola. And I'm talking about convincing you of my theories only.

I'm dropping this discussion here because 1) I'm not Game Freak and 2) I'm tired.

Honestly is very garbage. I feel like they were going for something like the hub in splatoon but excusion is really bad

I feel like the PSS was dropped because of the "always online" thing. People often stayed connected to the online servers even when they had no intention of using any of the PSS's features just in case. Given the amount of sales SM had, the servers would have had quite a bit of strain on them if everyone was always online. Thus, in order to avert such a scenario, Game Freak had to scrap the PSS and replace it with an intentially inconvenient method of connecting to their online servers.

At least that's my take.

As with a lot of SM, I feel, GF decided to go with half-baked ideas purely because it was a change from what we previously had. Progress for the sake of progress, isn't worth much, to misquote Order of the Phoenix.

I'd have to guess the PSS was more expensive on their servers since people could stay online while they just played the game. That cost them money, and sadly, GF/Nintendo isn't made of money. I mean, they have a lot more now since the Switch is a massive success, but when SuMo was released Nintendo's home console was the Wii U which was a failure financially and had a negative impact on their bottom line.
This isn't the first time that GF has removed a convenient feature. I am sure that it certainly won't be the last.
[puts a flower on the grave of Super Training]

Festival Plaza can burn in hell lol. The PSS was so much better in every imaginable way.

Game Freak tend to come off as optimists so I'm sure the idea of "merge the PSS with Join Avenue and let Wi-Fi do for it what it did for Pass Powers in XY" looked great on paper

Everything always looks good on paper. But then it's a mess if brought into reality. Game Freak just doesn't seem to learn from that. :/

Once I got wind of what they were doing with the Festival Plaza, well... that was it for me getting either one of Sun and Moon. I might have been able to stomach this downgrade if it weren't a successor to the very convenient PSS.

At least Gen VIII doesn't have massive shoes to fill now when we talk about online play, if I have to say one nice thing.
