Hello there guys.
I've been reading posts on here and Spff for a while now. I'm excited to finally start posting.

One of the greatest perils that has boggled my mind is ahem....which Pokemon out of Staryu, Starmie, and Goldeen did Misty start out with?

Why I am so boggled by this was because she owned both Staryu and Starmie. Yet she always held onto Goldeen (a pokemon her sisters owned as well). Also, we seem to know EVERYONE else's starter except Misty. Although Clemont is another story.

I think she may have been given some via the gym. Potentially starting out with two Staryu's, choosing to evolve one, then catching Goldeen.

What do you guys think?

Maybe Starmie, because out of Starmie and Staryu, Starmie might have had more experience, if she caught her Starmie as a Staryu.

Good Point. My thing is-I choose Staryu just because how long she kept it in her arsenal. That may be also because in the games when having two Poliwhirl, Jigglypuff, Weepingbell, or Vulpix (which shall change obviously come Sun & Moon) I tend to evolve the 2nd one most times. Not too sure why, though.
It makes me think back to Flannery having two Slugmas and then one Macargo after evolution. What would she have done if the other evolved as well? Would she legit have two on her team? We really don't have many characters seen with pre-stage and final stages as well as with the same pokemon. I wonder why sometimes...

Maybe her first Staryu that eventually became a Starmie. Seemed like her best at the time.

I know it doesn't necessarily make sense, but I always felt that she'd had Hitodeman/Staryu first. It just felt like she had an irresistible preference towards it (like Satoshi/Pikachu).

I wanna see Kasumi again

Maybe the reason Misty used Staryu so much is because it didn't have as much experience as Starmie had.

Starmie definitely appeared stronger than Staryu in the gym battle and I'm absolutely convinced that we only saw more of Staryu afterwards because of the blatant prominent preference the writers had for Pokémon not fully evolved aside from Charizard. That guy was the only fully evolved Pokémon of the first series owned by one of the three that wasn't released or stored.

I'm going with Starmie. It's a silly bias for the smaller mons that did this one in.

Look at Starmie's moveset. I get the feeling that either her sisters trained it and Misty rescued it from them, or Misty evolved it way too early. If it's the latter, it would make sense if it was her first Pokemon. Though the neglect it got during the series makes me a little wary on that.

At any rate, I'm gonna go with Staryu since she used it so much, and she seemed a little closer to it.

I have my doubts about Starmie being her first Pokemon. Otherwise, I feel like the show would have brought that up either when she left it at the Gym or at least when she returned. Granted, we didn't know that Onix was Brock's first Pokemon until after he left it at his home either, but at least it was his main Pokemon throughout the original series. Starmie didn't even last all of the Kanto arc and it was often overshadowed by her Staryu and even Goldeen at points.

Staryu because she always with him and much with him than starmie or maybe golden

But to me staryu is her first because and too me staryu and starmie are one of my best Pokemon team

I thought her sisters were inexperienced, seeing as they just basically gave away Cascade Badges? Plus, it having more experience could be why it wasn't used that often, because she wanted to raise Staryu more and prove her worthiness of being a Water Pokemon Master.

They were inexperienced and ignorant, yeah. That's why Misty could have rescued it from them: they were just dumb, evolved a Staryu way too early and had no idea what they were doing.

I see her Starmie as having more raw power, considering how it was able to one-shot that Weepinbell and do decently well against Ash in the Gym Battle, but I never got the impression that it was more experienced. And if it was, it really should have come up sometime during the journey or when Team Rocket attacked. (Or maybe they did mention it?) But then again, the original series was littered with plot holes, so.

Really, I see Starmie as an unfortunate casualty of the Kanto series. Being a fully evolved Pokémon not named Charizard in those dark ages always led to being written off at some point.

Butterfree? Released.
Primeape? Left for training, never seen since.
Muk? Immediately Oak'd because of the convenient bad smell that vanished by its next appearance without explanation.
Kingler? Practically lived with Oak.
Pidgeot? Released.
Not to mention that Pikachu and Bulbasaur both refused to evolve.

I rest my case. If that series were completely rewritten from scratch then I'm sure that Starmie would have gotten far better treatment.

I feel Misty and all her Pokémon would've gotten better treatment
