What was the big deal of Dawn facing a Gym leader and Lucian?

People seemed to think it was a big deal that Dawn battled a Gym leader and a Elite 4 member, when in reality she didn't do either of those things for herself. Sure it was nice that these things happened, but it didn't really hold much significance for Dawn herself.

She battled Maylene to help get her confidence up, as well as Maylene's confidence, who was depressed that Paul destroyed her.

She only battled Lucian because Buizel wanted to, not that she had any interest of going up against Elite 4 members.

Dawn was never going to stray from coordinating, especially with a mother who was a contest champion, and this girl is obsessed with dresses/pretty things/cute Pokemon. So why did people act like that would happen?

If it's not a big deal, why did you just create a thread about it?

The people who thought that those things could mean something at the time, obviously didn't have knowledge of the future.

I actually liked that, just like I like it when Ash does contests, because it allows us to see them in other conditions, trying different things.

Plus, battling Lucian worked to establish that Buizel was more of a battler than a contest guy therefore setting up the trade and battling Mayleen worked in Dawn's regaining her confidence storyline. Both played a part in DP's overall storyline even if it meant that Dawn weren't gonna stray from it...

How is that any different from Ash participating in a Contest because Aipom wanted to and because Wallace told him?...
The writers obviously tried to make Ash and Dawn both get involved in the other's plot, which is also proved by how often they take hints from each other and support each other
Also, it's interesting to see them try doing the other thing

Wait.. who's saying there is a big deal about it? But I guess most pople thought it was cool because its the first time a main girl got to face a gym leader and an E4 member. Not to mention it fitted in well with the overall story (Dawn's confidence issues and the Buizel/Ambipom exchange). So I guess if there is a big deal about it, its probably because it was a neat storyline.

It is a big deal, IMO. She's battled a member of the E4 and a gym leader. Something that Misty and May have never done. And Dawn did both with reason. Unlike Ash's usual "Hey random trainer/gym leader/E4 member, let's have a battle! :D" for fun and badges.

You make it sound like Dawn is a spoiled brat. She's not obsessed with dress, pretty things, and cute Pokemon. She just happens to like fashion and have cute Pokemon. XO

At the time people thought Dawn was being hyped up to be more than just the next coordinator on the show. As we can see now that DP is over, she pretty much stayed Contest oriented the whole time, even if she battled other characters.

It seems like you just keep making threads like this one just to remind everyone of what many thought in the past. First it was whether or not Dawn would capture a lot of Pokemon, and now her battling a gym leader and E4 member. Is there a real point to these threads? I wonder how many actually remember any of these things or if it's mainly just you.

I don't think it was a big deal. I agree with the person above me, it was more for confidence and developing Buizel's character

It was only a "big deal" because fans began kicking up a fuss over it and leapt to conclusions. Nothing else.

I did enjoy Dawn challenging Lucian and Maylene though. It was nice seeing her doing "Ash's thing" like how Ash sometimes does her thing.
