With Gen 7 winding down or possibly ending soon, I have one question: What will Gen 7 be remember for?

I have a couple ideas:

Z-Moves - obviously
Form changes - regional variants, Zygarde (10% and 100%), Ash Greninja, School Form Wishiwashi, Lycanroc, Oricorio, Necrozma, Totem sized pokemon, (unreleased original paint Magearna)
PokeRide in place of HMs
(Minor) Side quests and collectibles
New pokemon in the middle of a generation

For me the biggest are new Pokemon in the middle of a generation and the form changes. In specific, I like how GameFreak expanded the concept of alternate forms (virtually same pokes different stats and typing). More so than that, I'll remember how they expanded the Mega evolution system to kind of include ability (Power Construct, Schooling, Battle Bond) and Z-Moves (Ultra Necrozma).

What will you remember?

Slow cutscenes

Overambitious graphics that force the games to be starved in every other area and truly embody the notion of style over substance

Wasting the bottom screen on one of the most poorly implemented features ever, even on the heels of Based DexNav and Blessed PSS

Festival Plaza being horrible

Resurrecting unabashed enhanced versions just to hurriedly whip up another game using existing assets in order to fill 2017’s profit margins, even though Gens 5 and 6 found better ways of doing this

I enjoyed the Gen 7 games, not as much as other generations, but never the less I enjoyed them. That being said, one negative that I'll probably remember is Cursed Body Gengar instead of Levitate. It's rather minor but hurts just as much.

For me, it's getting out of the chibi art style and allowing full movement. It still looks like a Pokemon game, but it doesn't feel like a way to make use of the limitations of the 3DS. Also unique battle backgrounds. Going back to Kalos was jarring. I think there's a lot this generation does right that will be completely forgotten and attributed to the Switch game. I don't mind that, and I definitely don't think the games are perfect. They did scratch an itch I was missing from all Gen VI games, though. ORAS included. I just started up Emerald and I'm already enjoying it more than ORAS. I think I mostly really hate the art direction and how it makes everything feel smaller somehow.

The generation that's a mixed bag. I'll remember it for being able to push the boundaries of what is needed for the main campaign (Trials and PokéRide instead of Gyms and HMs), but also the generation with the least amount of overall content for the sake of graphical improvements.

In no particular order:

Hawaiian flavor.
Rotom Dex and all its comments.
Closed buildings.
A very unsatisfying follow-up game.
Decent story and villains.
Introduction of Trials and SOS Battles.
Mimikyu and Lycanroc.
Get in the bag memes.
20th anniversary.
Ultra Beasts.

Incineroar
Z-moves
No Gyms
Trials
Tapus
Ultra Beasts
Team Skull
Team Aether
Lillie
Gladion

Hawaii
Alolan formes
Hyper Training
Festival Plaza
The Breeding Fench (Tauros run in circles all day)

I think you forgot about Incineroar. :D

But really the starters were pretty good too

Just for the record, despite the tone of my above post I actually do like Gen 7, broadly speaking. It’s just... man, what an awkward step back in so many ways. I really hope they can lay out a clearer plan and establish a more stable direction on the Switch now that they’re done killing time on a fading console, and don’t have to worry about a big anniversary looming in the background.

IMO these are the +ves and -ves
+ve
Great storyline, almost as good as BW (for pokemon)
Pokemon introduced mid-gen (for the first time)
Pre-release: the reveal trailer hype, reveal trailer leak, announcing the next trailer and everyone going crazy etc
Lillie
Z-moves
Rainbow Rocket
Ultra Necrozma's theme :)
Aether Foundation
Ultra Beasts
Battle Royale (1v1v1v1!)
Rotomdex
Wormhole travelling
Vibrant, tropical world
Totems and trials
Step up in difficulty from ORAS/XY

-ve
Long cutscenes
Poor postgame (although USUM sort of redeemed it)
Festival Plaza, as a huge step back from PSS
No new megas
...Rainbow Rocket being an hour long boss rush
Return to "3rd version cash grab" formula. I hate it to bits... B2W2 spoiled me
1v1v1v1: (restricted to online and the arena... where are the overworld battles? Would have been cool to have 3 people challenge you at once around Alola)
Removal of Triple and Rotation Modes
Small region

I really loved the ride Pokémon. I went into Y the other day to hunt an HA exeggcute and it took me awhile to find a Pokémon who had surf and another who had fly. I won’t miss HMs if they never bring them back!

Personally speaking, I will probably remember Generation 7 the most for replacing gyms with the Island Trials, if there was one thing to name. But, like many others said, it will probably be remembered the most for the Island Trials, Ride Pokémon in place of HMs (a feature, or something similar, that I hope becomes a staple), Z-moves, Alolan Pokémon forms, Ultra Beasts, Team Skull & Gladion, and a region that's multiple islands instead of a larger landmass with multiple, smaller islands.

I would add to the list :

- speed and priority: abilities and moves for better game play and diversity
- they start to think outside the box when it comes to trapping and switching and other mechanics
- Old and new start to be remembered more and get synchronized more when it comes to pokemon, moves and abilities (Bulletproof, Beak Blast, Polen Puff; Soundproof, Sparkling Aria, Clanging Scales)

Hope they keep this level of creation up in next instalments too. There is a lot posibble stuff that could happen in future in the games.

Not having a "Skip cutscene" button and Festival Plaza being a huge step backwards after the PSS.

However, I'll also remember it for trying new things, whether they worked out or not: Archipelago as the main region, trying something new over gyms, ditching HMs, 2vs1 "boss" battles, crazy UB designs. And of course I'll remember it for Pyukumuku.
