Well the title says it all what would you do to make the games better and more enjoyable?

-stop dumbing them down to the extreme like XY and ORAS have been doing
-bring back dropped features like pkmn following, the pokéathlon, character customization...
-never remove any feature at all no matter what (so pkmn following, amie, pokéathlon, contests, customization, etc... will all stay forever and even get improved with the time rather than removed)
-give us good plot and characters like BW did
-not make anymore awful continuity issues like the ones that ORAS raised
-give us as many non-battling features to raise and use our pkmn for cause honestly I don't care about battles at all when it's supposedly the main thing.... I just love the pkmn and their world...
-give us more online options beyond battles and trades (they kinda did that with the Platinum/HGSS mini games but of course that got removed like everything)
-maybe add some Harvest Moon-style farming aspect as an optional thing for the player to do on the side (they have enough pkmn to replace all farm animals and enough berries to act as the crop, heck I'd love even a crossover game, but merging that aspect into the main games will be great for me too)
-maybe add some optional romance side story thing that the player can initially choose if they want to experience or not
-add any other ideas that can be refreshing elements to the series and helpful in personalizing your adventure

Boy am I glad someone made this thread. *cracks knuckles*

In general, there needs to be a complete change in direction. No more of this "mobile is profitable, so let's generalize our entire fanbase and make the game only appeal to casuals" mentality. Instead, design the game to appeal to a general gaming audience and create a flexible style that appeals to both the casual and hardcore fans. Want to tear through the game? You can do that. Want to branch out and explore? That's fine too. Want to stop playing the main game and do something else? There's plenty to keep you occupied. The games have lost this feeling in recent gens and there was no real reason for it to go away. So here's how I would go about doing that:

Region Design

The linear region design is good for a casual style of play where you just want to get through the game in quick, short bursts, but what about the hardcore gamers? Hardcore gamers need regions that feel a bit more open and expansive, like Hoenn or Sinnoh, large regions with plenty of options for exploration and tons of content. Fortunately, there's a way to mix these two styles together. Start with linear region design and set this as a "backbone" path, make it a clear, easy to follow path through the region to serve as the main path. Then add on branching and alternate paths that would be less obvious and require more exploration to progress. The casuals would be encouraged to follow the main path because it would be the quickest and easiest, but the hardcores would have plenty of space to wander off and explore and would be rewarded for doing so. Also, be sure to have plenty of post game areas, with full size routes and areas, not just one city and a couple of tiny areas.

Content and Replay Value

I kind of get the idea that every game should have unique content, it makes every game feel standout and desirable that way. However, they go a bit far with this. They need to have some level of standardization and decide which features should be in every game and which features should only be in certain regions. Gameplay features which are essential or otherwise highly useful to the experience (such as customization, the DexNav, and the Habitat List) need to stay permanently. Things like Contests and Secret Bases, (and this might be an unpopular one) Soaring don't need to be in every single game. However, every game should have some kind of side features, at least 2 or 3. We should never have a game as barren of extra content as Kalos was. I'm okay with the content being somewhat light in the initial paired versions, but we shouldn't really go too far below DP and BW1 levels of content. Also, at least 70-75% of the National Dex should show up in the games (if it's two games, it's okay to split it between versions). ORAS was a bit light with 477, there should've been at least 500ish.

Difficulty

Difficulty modes at the start of the game are a must. There's no other way for it to work. Then they can limit the trainer rosters all they want... on easy mode. Give trainers (in particular, the important characters like gym leaders, rivals, Elite 4, etc.) more Pokemon and give everyone tougher AI in Challenge Mode. Less handholding in Challenge Mode would be good too.

That's about all I can think of right now.

I've got a few suggestions of my own:
  • Less handholding, or at least give us the option to turn it down like ORAS did.
  • No forcing gift Pokemon on us. We should be able to turn them down.
  • Give us an expansive post game with lots of content. Cutting down on that because of the more casual players isn't an excuse, as post game content is optional.

The games are pretty good.. but I believe the following would make them fabulous :D!

  • Never drop amazing features like customization and the Dream World
  • Make the storyline good and not vague
  • Add trainer jobs e.g bug catcher, gym leader, Team Grunt
  • Make it so the storyline can have several outcomes based on decisions you make
  • Add a battle mode in the battle maison that is a legendary battle Royale

I only have a few.

-I'd have customization in every game. It's an awesome feature that makes the game feel much more personal.
-I'd add way more additional fun activities for casual players. After beating the game, there's not much to do unless you like competitive battling. I'd include Contests, Pokeathalons, Pokestar Studios; lots of things like these into every game for those of us who find no fun in wi-fi battles. And I mean a bunch of them in one game. Like one city would have a Contest Hall, one would have Pokestar Studios, etc.
-I'd include difficulty settings at the beginning of the game. Challenge mode was a great addition for those who wanted a more difficult time, but having to unlock it was ridiculous. It should be available from the start of each game.

That's all I've got for now.

Well, for me...

1. Make the region a truly open world, void of "paths". All citys are accessable at the start. One way to see it is the Game Boy Color Pokemon Trading card game - you control the order of the medals or badges you challenge. Wild pokemon/ Trainer encounters, and the story adjusts to badges you have.

2. A post game that literally has the majority of the exploration and battling content - The champion gains huge privaleges around the region otherwise completely hidden.

3. The Battle Pyramid from Emerald to come back. Make it wifi multiplayer compatable.

4. The Battle Factory to come back. Make it multiplayer as well.

5. Enough character customization for people to identify themselves with.

> Make the 'how to catch a Pokemon tutorial' skip-able. >_>
> I don't really care about clothing options, just give me ones for hair and body. That's all I ask in the customization department.
> Side-quests. Following just the main-plot is pretty darn boring, if you ask me. Doing some small errands would be a nice change of pace from time to time.
> Expanding the back-stories/stories of important characters. The gym leaders are some of the most powerful trainers in a region, and I'd like to think that they would have some importance throughout the story. Black and White did a good job with this, in my opinion, but I'd like to see it expanded on more.
> Having more to the post-game than just battling. Not everyone wants to breed Pokemon simply to battle. Having the Battle Frontier Factory again would be nice, or at least something similar.
> Gen II-V Exp. Share please, or at least the option to determine which one you want to use.
> Implement wi-fi in more things. It was a waste not to have the option for contests, and I'll be disappointed if a similar situation happens again.

And that's really it. I personally find the difficulty level just fine, but can understand why people want options. It'd be nice thing, but I probably wouldn't use it

Skippable basic tutorials would be swell. I don't like button-mashing for 15 minutes while I'm told what the red building's for and how to catch a Pokemon.

Difficulty settings- I think Pokemon's easy enough as it is, so let's add... hm... "Veteran Mode," where not only are levels boosted and rosters upgraded, but AI is boosted greatly as well. Bosses should have the intelligence of the tougher battle facility trainers. Wild Pokemon ought to keep their arbitrary AI though.

Keep the freaking DexNav. That feature, hands-down, is the best feature to have been introduced in a remake (and one of the best in the series overall).

Tournament-style competition. If there's one thing about the anime that I envy, it's the tourny stuff, and even though the PWT wasn't the best facility overall, I'll be darned if it wasn't fun and entertaining. Tournies need not replace the Battle Frontier, but they should be available, and the prizes should be something besides a measly amount of BP, maybe a good item or something.

Let's shake up the formula they've been using on the box legends since Gen III. Ever since RSE, the bad guy team has always been targeting the local god to use as part of their plan to idealize/remake/take over/blow up the world. It's better than sidelining legends as semi-random dungeon bosses with no connection to the main story at all (Gen I and II), but let's see a different story for once.

No Pikachu until postgame. Not in the wild, not in the overworld, nowhere. This includes images in its likeness, like shrub sculptures, inflatables, or advertisement billboards. If someone who'd never heard of Pokemon played the game, they wouldn't know Pikachu existed. If you want a cute Pokemon in its place, use Eevee, or maybe even Clefairy.

Have music with intensified violins. It worked wonders for Zinnia's battle theme, amirite?

Miror B. appearance. With Ludicolo synched with badass disco music. Awwwyeah.

You keep bringing that up when it wasn't even that bad. SO scyamore says mega evolution only happened in kalos? but happens in hoenn ok one line mess up, how about 6 generations of bigger plot holes..

Hey professor oak I finished the pokedex all 151

oak: good job you caught them all

3 years later

oak: catch 251, I didn't know the region I could literally walk to had 100 not in my pokedex

jasmine: steel types are new

fr/lg happens not so new and magnemites now weak to fire btw

scyamore: You caught all 721

next game

professor tree: congarts on catching all 10,000 pokemons in the mario sunshine region

those are bigger inconsistencies then scyamore saying mega evolution only happened in kalos when he never even explicitly said that, fairy types were stated to be just discovered though come x/y's remakes in 2038 they will be retconned to always existing, retcons exist in pokemon every game 100 or so animals just pop up out of no where and seemingly no one knew about them before the game came out. Beheeyem was found in a desert 50 years before b/w so 40 or so years before red/blue how does oak not know about it? how come no one in unova knew of yvealtal, or honedge or chespin or any gen 6 mon?

Anyway what I'd fix would simply be taking out linear designs and make the world more robust and free, and I'd make it so theres a difficulty setting. easy would be how it is now, medium trainers would use items and you can only heal outside of battle and hard all trainers use mega evolution and are ev trained with good natures and ivs and a tough AI that switches out when faced with a type disadvantage and no healing whatsoever save for pokecenters ( and rotation battles because those things are freaking hard)

Also anyone feel like the first gym in b/w should have been later on and been a triple battle? Just a random thought.

One of the odd things I take note of in breeding is which Pokeball the offspring will be in. To an extreme I hatched a shiny Mawile in a Dreamball for contests this generation. It's not just the Pokeball color, but the effect they have when opening. These things add more personalization to breeding.

That said, how about having it so genderless Pokemon pass down their pokeballs? There could also be a customization option to alter the current Pokeball, an opportunity the "Pokeball Boutique" failed to touch on, though it would most likely be limited to store-bought pokeballs while keeping the unobtainable versions still unique.

I swear, I have all kinds of ideas to improve pokemon games the whole day, but now as I'm here... None. It's like Darkrai used Dark Void (Or troll Smeargle if you want).

Oh I got something! Pokeball stickers! Loved them in DPPt :D

This. A thousand times, this.

I would love to be able to breed a shiny No Guard Golett and have the little guy in a Luxury Ball, so I can spoil him. But since he's not really a him--I can help but see Golett and Golurk as mostly masculine--it won't happen. Please GF, let the genderless Pokemon be able to pass down their Poke Balls through breeding. Or at least give us the opportunity to switch out the Ball. I'd really appreciate it.

More dynamic battles, closer to the way they are in the anime (but please God, not with quick time events) -
eg. caught in Wrap/Bind? Cut/Slash/etc. your way out
a "dodge" command
the ability to interact with the environment while battling, eg. attack from trees when in a forest to make moves like Pound/Tackle more powerful
attack the on-field hazards rather than the opponent, eg. use Bullet Punch on Toxic Spikes

As others have said, a less linear storyline -
go the wrong way & encounter lvl 50+ Pokemon with just your lvl 5 Starter? Tough - you should have listened to that NPC who warned you about the strong Pokemon
you choose whether you want to defeat the evil team or not & take the consequences, maybe even have the option to join them

A few small things -
the ability to buy drinks in bulk
have the option to automatically transfer gift Pokemon/eggs to your PC
bring back item storage

I agree with the selectable difficulty level, too

In no specific order:

  1. Turn all HM moves to TM moves. I find it to be an archaic feature, and it annoys me when I have to worry about it, or waste a spot for a HM slave.
  2. A better ending for the current villain team. It's annoying when nothing really happens. Either they find the error of their ways, or they just disappear. Where's the justice?
  3. More side-quests/end-game content. Maybe a good avenue for DLC?
  4. Continuing on with the customization XY had. Making the hero or heroin an extension of who we are would be fun. After all, this is an RPG-based franchise. Add more role-playing elements.
  5. Improved Pokémon cries. They proved they can do it, because Pickachu was updated.
  6. Add a difficulty setting. Just being too easy is boring. Sometimes, I want to be challenged without having to make up my own rules.
  7. Being able to chose not to battle a Trainer if we make eye-contact. It's annoying when I have to dodge every Trainer along a Route, mainly before we get to fly.

On the idea of customizable pokeballs, what about the "stickers" that were featured in the anime? Would add a layered effect on top of the Pokeball opening to add even more customization. Would totally add a sparkling sticker on top of my shiny contest Mawiles Pokeball. I really like the bonus halo-ribbon animation you get from throwing out a contest master.

I believe it was May who used the stickers, yet I've not seen anything like that in the game. The stickers aren't intended for contests really, just a bonus you can add to the Pokeball for battles.

Dude I know we just met, but I think I love you.

- They should bring back character customization and Secret Bases, and make them a more standard feature in future games. I think that those two specific features are awesome in the fact that they give the games a personal touch for each individual. X/Y is the second time they've brought character customization to the table(first time being PBR for the Wii), so I don't see why they can't do it again.

- While I don't see what the big deal has been about the whole "harcore gamers VS casual gamers" fiasco that keeps cropping up, I'm open to difficulty options. I can only hope that the 3DS and/or future handheld systems have the data capacity to handle that sort of option without majorly compromising other major parts of the games.

- Location, location, LOCATION. Give us a more expansive and diverse region to explore. I would also like to see the differing seasons brought back as well. Also, if we get more exploration options, they need to make HM's not-so-pain-in-the-ass. Like make the weaker HM's more suitable for even League battles(I'm looking at you, Rock Smash) and give us the option of deleting HM's ourselves... or in a sense, turn them into TM's. Or just give us special Key Items and get rid of HM's entirely.

I for one would do anything for a game that focuses less on winning the league and more on exploration, that would be my dream come true

1.In order to make better games they need to know about their audience and how to to apply that knowledge right? They have an idea in there head "Gamers especially western gamers are impatient now." Somewhat true but how do they apply it? By making the games not just easy but brainlessly easy. That's the wrong direction to go with it. First by having the games be that easy players go through the games for along time without getting much out of it thus draining their "limited patience". Second there is way more patiencent draining stuff. I timed this: the time it takes for a random encounter to go from activation to letting you choose something is 8 seconds. I mean I guess it kinda gives more incentive to buy repels but it's pretty ridiculous.

2. Add the ability to change IV's on each Pokemon. The current mechanic is bad straight up. They are barely noticeable in game. It's creates an environment in which cheating is easy to do, hard to stop, and highly incentivized. Breeding is not very engaging a lot of the time. It's flat out creepy with whole keeping perfection in the IV pool thing. In the meta most things are the same anyways and there are better ways to differentiate them in game. The new featured could be tweaked in all kinds of ways to prevent it from being to easy. But "leveling up" when you're already max level giving a point raise or lower depending on a would be slow but satifying way to do it.

3. Make would be exclusive content such as abilities, moves and Pokemon available without location or finite programs. Hell put the pokewalker dream world thingy in an app on the cartridge. Hell something as simple as giving a password on how to get each "event legend" without an event a couple years after the generation is no longer supported would be an easy but effective way of doing that.

1. Bring back customization. I'm sorry, but having the option to choose my character's skin tone, eye color and clothing shouldn't be limited to one area of the Pokemon world. I would also expand on this, giving the PC a larger variety of clothing options, like Pokemon tees and cosplayer type dresses.

Oh and guys can wear girl's clothing and vice versa. Why strictly limit the options to each gender?

2. Make the Friend Safari a permanent feature. It's easier to find shinies and HA Pokemon there. I loved running around in that area of Kalos; this needs to be a thing in every region.

3. Make the opening "How to catch Pokemon" tutorial skippable. Or better yet, if any of your friends/rivals notice you've caught Pokemon and have them in your party, they mention that you know what you're doing and that ends that.

4. Make catching the game sweeping Legend an event after the E4. Seriously, I'm tired of being handed a Pokégod just after the 7th Gym. Make us wait and prove that we're capable enough of handling that sort of power. (Do you really trust a 10 year old to have the common sense not to destroy the world with Groudon? Didn't think so.)

5. Give us a good story. That's why I love Gen V so much. The story drew me in and I just loved it. I want something like that again please.... and before we get Unova remakes! >_<
And lastly--

6. For the love of all that's holy GF, give Golurk his flight mode! I'm not on the back of a freaking bird when I'm flying around Kalos or Hoenn!
