What's an infraction?

Dictionary.com said:
breach; violation; infringement: an infraction of the rules.

Basically, it's something you're given for breaking a rule, either an explicitly written rule (like replying to spam, a sticky regarding which is found at the top of this very forum) or an unwritten, common sense-type rule...like flaming and trolling. They expire (different offenses expire at different times) and if you amass ten (either infraction, or infraction points, not sure)...you're automatically banned for...I'm not sure how long (not permanently, though...not just for acquiring infractions). If you're a good member, you'll never reach the number that bans you. If you're a BAD member, you'll reach it quickly.

Hmmm... so what is possibly the longest ban period one can achieve? Not that I want to get myself banned, but I'm just curious.

So you can get an infraction for being even a little bit off topic?
For example...

Being off-topic is pretty much the equivalent of spamming since it doesn't have anything to do with the main point of the thread. You might be able to get away with it depending on the stinginess of the mods/admins.

Infractions? Auto-bans?

We have those here, now?

I just discovered I got 2 points for replying to spam (Hey GrnMarvel, lol) I'm ashamed, how long is it gonna take to recover?

Thanks, 3 months or so if anybody's interested, I'm gonna try and steer clear from now on. Has this forum got a, You can't be a mod if you've had an infraction kind of policy, not that i'd ever expect to be a mod, i'm just curious.

Even mods and admins can get infractions if they break the rules.

I got 2 for posting Ackbar in a Bugsy thread.

Come on...it's totally On Topic.

Yeah but if a non-mod got an infraction, would they now never be able to be mod?

There's at least one current mod who was made a mod while they still had an infraction on their record, so that's a safe no there.

Might be different if it was a major infraction, but certainly not for a little offtopic-ness.
