whats better PMD or the core games (warning: may contain salt)

This is not even a fair comparison.

The PMD series is a spinoff, so it isn't responsible for defining series canon; on the downside, this generally means it is limited by what Pokemon species and moves are defined by its corresponding main series generation, but on the flipside, it has a lot more freedom to explore ideas that the main series does not.

Gameplay wise, again you can't compare PMD to main series as if one is "going to be" better than the other; they simply do different things to begin with.

Though personally I find the PMD stories a bit more engaging, perhaps because they are more epic- and fantasy- oriented than the main series.

That's like comparing apples to oranges. They're both pokemon games, but that's about where the comparison stops. I think either genre has its merits, and I absolutely adore the dungeon crawler aspect of PMD and sometimes wish we had a bit of that influence in the core games. Of course, the core games have dungeons, but most aren't really worth re-exploring after your first visit. And maybe it's me looking at older games with rose-coloured glasses and nostalgia, but I feel like revisiting locations has become less fun in recent generations? Or at least Gen VII. Even though I enjoyed the game a lot. Maybe I'm just not a big fan of the art style.

What I always kinda miss in the PMD games (although I haven't played all of them) is a bit of freedom. The storyline is much more adamant in pushing you in a certain direction and I always feel like you've got less choice/freedom

But really, once again, these games are so different from each other they're hardly comparable

the core game base mechanics ( immunities, types; 90% of all abilities, 90% of all moves) are alwasy better because they make more sense in gameplay and were remastered longer where players were partialy taking part in changing the game thhrough out generations complaning of forums and chats where probably also were the creators...

PMD gives you about as much freedom as Persona does. Especially in Super Mystery Dungeon, the main story proceeds on a schedule whether you like it or not, but this isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Mystery Dungeon has the best story telling in the franchise and is actually a challenge. They're the best games Pokemon has to offer. ...the first two, anyway.

Murr lets PLEASE not get into a fight about which PMD game is the best i never asked that

I could never get into PMD's gameplay. I appreciate the series for focusing on Pokemon as characters, but I feel that there is a better way out there to accomplish that - within the Pokemon world of the main series.

Over the years of playing games from both series, I've definitely found myself much more emotionally invested in the PMD games and storylines, although I like the battle mechanics and strategy of the core game series a lot more. Both game series kind of railroad you down a certain path, plot-wise, but I feel like the PMD games at least have more replayablity due to the randomly generated dungeons. That being said, I feel like you have more options available in the core games for methods of gameplay, and the repetitive, grindy nature of roguelikes (especially in the post-game) definitely isn't for everyone.

It would be really interesting for the core game series to adopt procedurally generated dungeons, though I'm uncertain how feasible that would be.

I've always preferred the core games, but I don't really think the two can be compared fairly. PMD is a rouge-like dungeon crawler while the core series is a turn-based-rpg. I can say that I always enjoyed how refreshing the PMD stories can be since it can get a bit tiring having the core series use a similar set-up for each generation (I like the writing in them, I just wish they'd switch up the evil team formula a bit)

I have to agree with most of what’s already been said. The two can’t really be justifiably compared. Not only due to gameplay and such, but because PMD suffers from having to use what the main series has already created. In that way, it’s a little restricted, as they can’t create new Pokémon or moves or megas or what-have-you. Also, by virtue of being a spin-off, it’s not as popular and therefore doesn’t get as many entries. I think that’s one thing that may help them, though. By not pumping out a new game every year, they can create something with a great story and characters and everything. It’s clear the MD series isn’t in it for the money, nevessarily, and I appreciate that.

"sarcastic" YEP definitely not any freedom there
heh heh

The core games and the PMD games are for sure not a fair comparison. I mean one is more or less the bread and butter of the franchise while the other is where the franchise is to more or less experiment. IMO they aren't a fair comparison because the games are different. Whichever game is "better" really depends on what the player is looking for.

However, to answer the question, I do enjoy the PMD games more than the core games. I do enjoy the concept a lot more than the main games, post-game is better and personally, I think the PMD universe lends itself to more post-game adventures, whether officially or unofficially then the core games. I mean, for me at least, I have taken the post-game plots in PMD and made them my own. Personally, it's much harder for me to extend the core games and make it my own.
