First the premier only scored a 5.3, then the next episode got a 5.1, and now the fourth episode not only didn't even make top 10 but the rating is lower than 4.7. How has XY's quality dropped so fast as to lose over 0.6 points in only 3 weeks?

Considering the usual variation in the ratings, that is not a statistically significant difference. It is unlikely that the variation seen over three data points is indicative of anything.

Pokemon has always been around 4.5% to 5% average for eternity. Sometimes it goes over 5%, sometimes it does a worse job. However, just because the ratings dropped doesn't mean the quality of the show dropped. TV ratings aren't reliable in this era when everyone can watch via the Internet whenever they want without having to sit in front of the TV right on time.

Fun trivia: Back when Episode N aired, N's debut episode achieved less ratings than a random filler episode. It was when everyone was hyped about N.

i'm more curious why these forums are so obsessed with episode ratings... or how you can think they reflect an episode's quality? pokemon ratings are usually always the same. its not exactly a great show, you realize, its the same show as its always been with variations added sometimes. an episode rated high means absolutely NOTHING. it just means lots of people watched - they could have watched and every single one gone "that episode was awful and i hated it". the episode will still have the "high rating" from how many people watched it.

i really do not understand the obsession with these meaningless ratings. @_@

I wish I could like a post more than once. This is the only thing that needs to be said about the subject.

This and That!

A show's ratings and its quality are (completely) different things.

Hell, the antiquated, often unfair Neilson system (not sure if that's what they use in Japan, just using it as a name) has LITTLE meaning in this era of streaming media and DVRs (it's used as a tool for advertisers more than anything else). Shoot, Television itself is slowly losing its place in the world...

So what if XY isn't some ratings mega-hit? What is, really? The networks needs to have more realistic expectations anyway. If people don't want to tune in to Pocket Monsters at some of its finest, their loss. I'll just sit back and enjoy it anyway :)

While I do wonder why XY is getting such different ratings from other saga premieres (based on the sneek peek on CN, I really don't think it's a drop in quality), it really doesn't matter very much at all. To put it another way ratings are overrated :p

Interesting that the Cilan special (5.5) beat both XY's premiere and Origins (4.7) by a decent margin, though.

Decolora Islands killed the viewership I think. Think about what lead to the last few launches before it. DP picked up after Ash beating Brandon with the Kanto starters and completing the Battle Frontier and BW picked up after the Sinnoh League. XY comes right after months of filler.

My brain is breaking.

Literally nothing happened with the ratings, ratings don't matter for Pokemon anyway, the show's ratings have dropped just like every other show in Japan over the years. AG's were lower than OS, DP's were lower than AG's, BW's were lower than DP. It's nothing big at all or a cause for concern, the show's never getting cancelled as long as the merchandise sells well anyway. They have nothing to do with the quality of the show and Pokemon isn't a show watched for its story telling anyway, kids aren't going to stop watching because of the banes of "good writing" not being implemented.

I was just going off the post above mine that said the other premiers got a similarly higher score each time and giving a reason why I thought it happened differently this time. I don't believe the general audience for Pokemon is interested in story that much, but I can't help but feel most of them find it less exciting compared to the other things I mentioned. I know the ratings overall have plummeted over time (the episodes through the seasons other than the opening), but if the season premier stayed consistent and then suddenly dropped, I was just thinking it had to do with what came before it.

The most watched episode in the franchise's history is Episode 33 of the original series, "The Big Race of Fire Pokemon!" ("The Flame Pokémon-athon!"). It got an 18.6% rating when it premiered on TV-Tokyo back on November 11th, 1997.

Therefore, it is the best episode of the entire franchise and everything since then has been shit.

Ya can't beat hard evidence like that!

Closing, since I think we can all see that the main premise of this thread is pretty stupid.
