Okay, so me and my friend were just watching the episode where Dawn meets up with Leona her old friend from kindergarten who owns the hot spring hotel. And she calls Dawn 'DeeDee' just like Kenny did.

Then Ash once again asked why she is called that and Dawn freaked out. So why is she called that?

Will we ever find out, or is it just another one of those wierd things we fans just have to accept that we'll never find out.

Why would the writers bring it up on more than one occasion if it isn't addressed later? Any speculation on where "dee dee" came from and why Dawn doesn't want ash or brock to know.

Is there any further clues in the original japanese versions?

Ah, far as we know, there's virtually nothing we know about the whole Pikari/Dee-Dee incident, and Dawn seems to be pretty vigilant in making sure nobody ever ever ever finds out.

It's not exactly a plot point that really reels me in, but I can't say for sure whether or not they'll actually give us a straight answer or not before Dawn leaves the main cast.

What I will be interested in is, if they *do* shed full light on "Pikari", how will the dub make it translate well to "Dee-Dee"...

Well, in the original, it's implied it has something to do with Pikachu.
When Kengo is first introduced and first uses Pikari, he thinks Hikari has captured a Pikachu in which they can both pika pika pikari.

I look at it as just a cute running gag. If we do find out the earliest would be the Sinnoh Grand Festival, IMO.

Yeah, if they don't explain it by the Grand Festival, then it's just a throw-away running gag from Dawn's childhood.

It doesn't really need to be explained, friends kind of make fun of each other as kids all the time.

Dawn got her nickname "Dee-Dee" during the noodle incident.

The "noodle incident" when did that happen and what exactly happening in Dawn's childhood that makes her friends call her "Dee Dee" that she considers embarrassing?

The noodle incident is from the comic Calvin and Hoobes(sp?),(I asked about it and a few people told me). I think it's a passing joke that never got explained if i remember correctly.

Although, I think that it's to me another passing joke, that will never get explained.

Spell-checked. ;P

And this is the type of joke that's going to be taken to the grave, just like what DID happen with Brock and Prof. Ivy back in the end of the Orange Islands arc.

Thanks for the spell-check. :)

And I agree, people will be talking about this as long as the mystery is open.

It's probably the very reason the writers introduced this in the first place. Leaving behind an open mystery for people to speculate about till the end of time like Brock and Ivy. Either that or the writers are just lazy. :D

Dawn's friends call her dee-dee because in japanesse , her name is hikari and when they saw pikachu with her they think it's hers. because of that they called her 'pikari'. 'pikari' is untranlatable so the called her 'dee-dee' because it sounds like 'dawn'.

Hope this helps :)

Nobody knows anything about the "Pikari"/"Dee-Dee" nickname yet.

No, seeing Ash's Pikachu probably prompted them to call her the nickname again, but it clearly got its start in some sort of incident that took place before Dawn started her journey.

What about the story of when two massive 'd's fell on Dawn? Only Kenny and Dee-Dee saw this, therefore they only call her Dee-Dee.

That won't work. Remember, the anime is originally written in Japanese. Her original nickname is "Pikari". Whatever the real explanation is, it would explain that, not "Dee-Dee".

I was always convinced it had something to do with a Pikachu. Pikari. And then there was the fact that Hikari was all 'Omg a Pikachu!' when she came across Ash's in the first episode. It seemed to make sense, ish. Just was never given a proper backstory, and I'm fairly positive that now it just will never be given one.

Hikari is cute but not is smart because piplup hate she at the start
