Had modest raikou, didn't know about evs. *dies a little inside*
New platinum game, will play with the traded egg of ... well idk ill choose a pokemon to bond with like ash and pikachu now that I found good reason. If any1 discovered evs from this thread, you are welcome! :D

Since the very first time I played Gen I, I knew that Pokemon raised by battling grew much stronger than ones raised by the daycare or Rare Candies. Kids at school were always talking about this so called "Stat exp", and why you shouldn't clone Rare Candies to raise your Pokemon because then your Pokemon will end up weaker.

When Gen III rolled around I was oblivious to the change in mechanic until I tried looking up a way to make my Mightyena's special attack better, and found out about EVs and the EV cap.

I learned about EVs when I checked Serebii's site for some Pokemon information that I never knew before. Effort Values was something that caught my eye, because it's a term I saw on Smogon and didn't know what it was. At first, I thought EVs are allowed to accumulate forever, but it wasn't too long before I learned of its limitations. Not because I realised nothing worked, but it's because I wanted to understand EVs better.

Thanks for reading.

I read a FAQ on another site about competitve movesets and it had a discussion about them there.

I randomly stumbled upon Bulbapedia and I looked at the right hand side where it lists the physical characteristics. At the bottom, it said EV Yeild.

Also when I look at the base stats
Bulbapedia said:
Minimum stats are calculated with 0 EVs, IVs of 0, and a hindering nature, if applicable.
Maximum stats are calculated with 252 EVs, IVs of 31, and a helpful nature, if applicable.

I'm pretty sure that I learned about them from checking on Serebii's website probably some time during the early stages of the fourth generation. I might have learned about it during the third generation, but I'm pretty sure that I didn't learn about EVs and how they worked until the fourth generation.

I learned about them during the forth generation. I didn't really fully understand EV training and decided to give it a shot, anyway. Even then, in competitive battling, I never understood the whole 252 atk/252 spe/4 HP thing until like...late 4th gen/early 5th gen, I suppose? Somewhere around there.

I learned about them when i started watching videos from Jwittz, in which he explained in detail what the IVs and EVs were.

I learned about EVs around when BW first came out, and I properly learned how to accumulate EVs way after B2W2 was released. It took pretty long for me to realize the EVs' existence, and I've played the games from Gen 1

I guess I was vaguely aware of them in Gen I because I thought Pokemon who fought for experience were stronger than those raised by rare candies. I more officially learned about them after I got Pearl.

Okay, this is really embarrassing - I'm 21 years old and have been a Pokemon fan since I was practically a toddler (okay, 6, but you get the point). I've played every generation since Blue and I learned about EVs... you guessed it... this year.
Yeeeeeeeaaahhhhhh...woops.

I first heard about them (and IVs, I think) when reading discussions about DP after it came out.

Yet I still never bothered to try it in-game.
