When exactly was Clefairy supposed to be the mascot?

It seriously seems like Pikachu was always the mascot. Even in the earliest official art I can find, Pikachu was in it.
Pikachu, and a Clefairy, are the two Pokemon protagonists of the first Pokemon manga.
Pikachu has been in quite a few gen 1 official arts, presumably even before it hit big with the anime.

Yet everyone says that Clefairy was the original mascot and that Pikachu was made the mascot before the anime made it popular. If anything, Clefairy was Blue's (aka Leaf) mascot before she was scrapped.

I have heard GF thought it was too feminine to be the mascot, so they used the gender neutral Pikachu, but that often overlaps with the anime theory.

i've always wondered why there was a clefairy was the pokemon that sometimes showed up in games in d/p/pl's game corners. at first i thought it was just a random decision but now it makes sence

I think originally Ash was going to have a Clefairy in the anime (which would have made it similar to the Pocket Monsters manga) but then they changed it to Pikachu at the last minute or something.

Either way, I still think Clefairy is one of the mascots, but it's not the mascot.

I read somewhere the original mascot was going to be TR's Meowth, but people responded more positively towards Ash's Pikachu...thus is what we have today!

Clefairy was never the mascot. People think that Clefairy was intended to be the mascot possibly from the first Pokemon manga published which had that talking Clefairy. If I recall, someone mentioned how there was actually no instance of Clefairy ever being planned to be the mascot.

The only reason most people want Clefairy to be mascot is because they hate Pikachu due to its over-popularity.

No, you heard what people thought Game Freak thought about a Pokemon that actually has no evidence towards it of being a mascot apart from the first Pokemon manga.

If anything, the only reason pikachu beame the mascot was because of the anime.

..It sure seems like Pikachu has always been the mascot. Why put a random rodent in that early official art instead of, say, Bulbasaur or Venusaur?

Poor little Jigglypuff...Why come the Clefairys (Clefairies?) get all the love?

Why would Jigglypuff be the mascot of anything other then possibly Leaf? It has the design, a bit ambiguous compare to Pikachu or Clefairy, but other then that..

Because its actually been showcased as a recurring character in the early anime and disappeared only in the Hoenn saga (with a proper send-off no less, finding a Whismur to finally listen to its songs), and making it as a permanent member of the SSB series? It may be the only character in the show that has actually achieved what it set out to do.

Also manga =/= game which is the only place where the girl protagonist is connected to a Jigglypuff. Or a Clefairy.

Pikachu and Jigglypuff are often considered counterparts. I don't know where the connection came from, be it due to that, SSB (it is wearing her hat after all, just like Red - Pikachu) or Special, but it's a fandom thing.

No they aren't. I don't know where you get your information from. Anyway, if you're wondering, how about you read that little post at the top?

Leaf was to be in the original games, if early official art to be believed. Assuming her Jigglypuff was to be as important in game as it is in the manga, and the development of SSB, the anime, and/or the manga are to be believed, it is quite likely that Jigglypuff was at least to take secondary mascot position.

As for Clefairy? Doubt it. The manga it was in is a bunch of bizarre surrealistic comedy where Mewtwos roam the forests, Pokemon skip to the end of their evolution lines and then back at will, and Red whips his testicles out in public. It can't be taken seriously as canon, despite being hilarious. Aside from web rumors (PIKABLU IS REEL, GAIS!!!!1), there is no other evidence supporting such at all that I can find or has been brought up in this topic. Feel free to prove me wrong if I'm missing something, but I really don't think that I am.

You forget that the manga it was in is also the most popular manga in Japan. Or so I hear.

Considering that they didn't think it would be this opular, they would have been catering tot heir Japanese audience back then.

I dunno, I just wanted to say something about Jigglypuff...it's way cooler than its snaggletooth, Moon Stone-loving counterpart.
