I know this must be a common topic, but still:

When do you think Pokemon will end? I know it's a hazy question, but:

I think they'll go up to Gen 8, because of japan having eight regions, and then stop making pokemon but continue making games.

What do you think, and why wil it end?

All I can think is that it will end when the Gen that makes the thousandth pokemon is released.

I'll say, it will end when it becomes unpopular. Until then, it will either keep going until all ideas are used up, or until it becomes unpopular. It won't end while more can be done and pokemon is still doing well

Right, however I've been toying with the idea that new Pokemon will eventually reach an upper limit. With each generation, the presumption is that new Pokemon must be associated with the mix. After a while, developing 500+ Pokemon is going to become too tedious for the metagame after every generation. Not to mention, keeping track of such a large amount will begin to intimidate crowds.

I'm thinking that after this upper limit of new pokemon is reached (which very well could be after Gen V), they may consider limiting certain groups of pokemon to a region. However that would be a bit unfair when people begin to develop favorites and demand their pokemon be included. Or, they may continue to create new regions but cut out new pokemon from being involved. These can be delivered handily in expansion sets.

The main franchise goes strong, but keeping it afloat without imploding the franchise is the biggest challenge. People have left the fandom before because it's gotten too big for itself, though admittedly people come back for that reason. On that note, in a final scenario, the Pokemon universe may grow indefinitely, but fans will grow to only a certain area of the Pokemon universe. No longer will there be a pressing need to 'catch them all'. Still, the developers will only make so many before 1000+ or 2000+ becomes too much to develop for the game (and keep balanced).

To be honest, I don't know when it will end. There's a saying that goes "all great things come to an end", and I apply that to Pokemon as well. But in the meantime, it's not going to end soon, so it's best that we enjoy it while we can. I'm completely psyched about Gen V, already wishing we'd have a release date of December instead of Spring 2011 (North American release date).

Pokemon is like the Olympics. It doesn't get canceled (with a few exceptions, but we'll ignore this.)

Pokemon will, as said above, continue to be developed if the games continue to do well. As long as they do well, they won't be cut off.

However, as Pokemon is one of Nintendo's core franchises (others being Mario, Legend of Zelda, Star Fox...) even if Pokemon's sales slip, it is unlikely that pokemon will die anytime soon.

It will end when it cost more to produce the games than what they earn on them.

Never.

Oh, you mean realistically?

How should I know? It all depends on the demand of the product, the continued popularity, original designs and concepts, Nintendo still being around, a video game market continuing to run smoothly, etc.

It will never end... Pokémon earns Nintendo so much money, you think they'd let Game Freak stop the series?

As long as it remains profitable, then Pokémon is effectly immortal.

As for the limit on the number of Pokémon... I prediect 999 of them will be created. But it doesn't mean they'll stop producing games even if they actually reach that number. They could just produce a new region with different species.

NEVAR!!! I think Pokemon is gonna go on until they just keep losing more and more fans. Then Nintendo will probably decide to make a new thing. Which won't get as many hits, because Pokemon was just an awesome idea.

Depends how long it'll last for. It's like Bleach and Naruto.

It just drags on.
I hope Naruto will end, when the heck is he gonna find Sasuke >_<

I have no idea when will Pokemon end, it may be a long time from now, who knows, it may be here when I have kids, or my kids kids have kids or even when my kids kids kids kids kids have kids :phew:

I won't let them finish it until they give us a all regions game

Pokémon will end one day. Everything has a start and end. But it's still strong, so it's going to be here for a long time.

Pokemon is bound to end eventually, but I don't see it ending any time soon. The games have been really popular.

I honestly can't see it going past Gen 6, or hell even Gen 5. They just can't continue on adding more and more Pokemon. This is a kids game after all, and having 1,000(or more) monsters would be a bit fucking overwhelming. They won't make a new gen without any new monsters; Pokemon was never groundbreaking so I don't expect any truly awesome features to be introduced in order to keep the franchise afloat.

Seriously, they can only go so far.

December 21st 2012 when the world ends...

I don't think it'll end for a while, but there are a lot of pokemon now! It''ll be hard to catch 'em all! lol. I personally hope they continue to make games for a really long time, though it would be strange if I still played them when I'm like 50
