Where are they? Did the writers just decide to scrap them? or did something else happen?

They only ever appeared intermittently in the main series, although BW was the only saga to date in which they didn't put in an appearance at all. They were, however, featured in an episode of the "Rocket-Dan's Secret Empire" spin-off radio show, so they weren't completely forgotten.

Butch and Cassidy are probably where all the potentially good characters that could have added controversy to pokemon, while turnning it into a more "complete" series in terms of storyline, are: playing badminton at prince's Beethoven mansion, located in the "we love to exterminate progess posibilties" island. Is a very nice place, actually. ^^

You'll have to explain exactly what kind of controversy you think Butch and Cassidy were in danger of adding to pokemon. :p

The producers ran out of good ideas for them. Then they ran out of ideas all together.

I'm hoping they come back (if the TRio can go from Worst Villains Ever to being worth something, then so can they!), but I hope they're not as awful as the last time we saw them...

PS; STFU Namba!

Ah, so Yamato and Kosaburou haven't appeared lately? *is not caught up with the anime in the slightest* That sucks. Hopefully they appear soon. :/

Trust me, you didn't miss anything
I get that you didn't like BW, but no reason to randomly take jabs at it here. If you can't add to the conversation without the necessary snark, then I suggest not posting in the thread.

But Sir, that wasn't a jab at BW! That was letting Beatles know that she didn't miss much with not seeing B&C's later appearances.

I'm sorry it sounded as such. I should've made it a little more clear :-(

Like Jigglypuff, I feel the writers think that Biff (THE NAME'S BUTCH!) and Cassidy are no longer relevant to the series, especially since the anime has become so formula-based and the fact that more rivals to Ash and friends have been made that they no longer appear, and given the fact that the TRio simply follows Ash to regions where Team Rocket has no operations there and have their own local villain teams, it's no surprise that they never appear anymore.

You saying it wasn't formula-based back in the earlier series? :p

I suspect the main reason why Butch and Cassidy didn't show up in the anime in BW had more to do with the general treatment of Team Rocket throughout that saga - more serious, more sidelined and more sporadic. As (predominantly) comic relief rivals to Jessie and James, they weren't such an easy fit. Their key purpose had long been to make the TRio, at their goofiest, look better by giving them a couple of peers they could periodically pull the rug out from under.

I agree. Since the Team Rocket trio were more serious and didn't appear as often throughout BW, it would be kind of difficult to make an appearance from Butch and Cassidy work. Although, I don't think that they've worked well as comic relief rivals when they've felt like a poor man's Jessie and James since Chronicles. I always thought that they worked better as the anti-Team Rocket trio where they were a bit more serious and more competent in the original series.

Funny how this thread was posted, because Butch and Cassidy are my OTP (don't ask why or how, they just are XD).

It would've been nice to see them featured in the TR/TP arc, if that had been aired. Sadly, I didn't expect them to appear much longer because their focus slowly went towards Dr. Namba's plans, rather than Giovanni's. That reason alone, along with the fact that Team Rocket is not really a huge part of the anime anymore, is probably why their appearances are dwindling and are only limited to silly fillers, if any.

Most gladly my friend. Well, i think that they could have provided a good chance for Team Rocket to progress in teamwork and self-growth. Their life is to try and steal Pikachu, tracking our heroes down all over Japan; i think that if they had been in clear and stablished danger of having their ultimate dream stolen by another team, things might just have got a lot more interesting.
Possibilities are endless: Jessie and James would have started to pursue better battling techniques; or perhaps strageties. They could have made them dissapear for a few episodes (putting more effort in the oh-so-loved repetitive little adventures that the main team have, perhaps establishing some connection between them. Not anything too complicated) and have them returned with brand new pokemon, perhaps some physical change (haircuts, scars, etc), some personality changes; fixed goals; personal growth and determination but withouth loosing their adored goofynes (some viewers might feel the need to review old seasons too, or even re-play or re-buy some games); all things that we have seen in some of the main travelers that had been in the series for a shorter time and yet, the team rocket had gone trough no character developement at all! (I'm not talking about a complete makeover, i'm just saying that for all the adventures and the life-or death situations they had been trough; they should have developed more personal complexity and also as a team, isn't that simply rational?) And like that, turn them into a REAL treath and a REAL challenge to the main team, which was what they more or less were supposed to be. To reinforce their passion towards prestige and money acquired by any "evil" means neccesary- and to reinforce the sense of justice that the main characters have.
This personal growth of the TR as a response to the potential trheat that Cassidy and Butch could have been to them if they had stuk around a little more, would have possitively brought along good clashes between them (Cassidy and Butch, and Jessie and James); a more determiend and ambitious thirst to get Pikachu before the other team does; competition to determine whose wishes and objectives, and desires are the strongest, etc. In order not to take that much attention from the main team (which i actually think it would do no harm) this could be kind of a side story if you'd preffer. Or a consequence of events shown by flashbacks (or something of the sort)
After all, James departure from Cacnea sems to me practically a desperate scream from the character to be developed. He blamed himself for not a being good enough trainer for her, and quit being her trainer just so she could get better at fighting-
And that's only a part of it: maybe the two TR could have joined forces in order to catch Pikachu. Acceded to travel togheter as a 4 team Rocket people, and so the main team would and all those random, short adventures with different people could have a lot more meanning. Because, if both TR make an appearance in every episode Ash and his friends bump into someone new, then we would have a 4 againts 4, and Brock would finally be much more than a simple referee (which,he deserves to be!) And this is just a quick "soup of ideas"- the possibilities are endless.

Yes watching Butch and Cassidy work together in an uneasy alliance during the battle against TP would have made for excellent viewing
