Where did the belief that Ash doesn't evolve his Pokemon start?

Where did this belief come from?

Seriously, where did this start? Just because in Kanto both Pikachu and Bulbasaur refused to evolve, and Ash's Johto team was wasted potential, doesn't mean Ash is against evolution. Where do people get this idea from?

Take a look at his lineup, its almost all evolved or final stage Pokemon:

1. Pikachu (Middle stage techinically due to Pichu)
2. Bulbasaur - Chose not to evolve
3. Squirtle
4. Charizard - Evolved
5. Kingler - Evolved
6. Muk - Evolved
7. Snorlax - Evolved (Even if Munchlax didn't exist back then)
8. Heracross - Final stage
9. Tauros - Final stage
10. Bayleef - Evolved once
11. Quilava - Evolved once
12. Totodile
13. Noctowl - Evolved form
14. Donphan - Evolved
15. Sceptile - Evolved
16. Swellow - Evolved
17. Corphish
18. Torkoal - Final stage
19. Glalie - Evolved
20. Torterra - Evolved
21. Infernape - Evolved
22. Staraptor - Evolved
23. Gliscor - Evolved
24. Buizel
25. Gible

Of the releases:

26. Butterfree - Evovled
27. Primeape - Evolved
28. Pidgeot - Evovled
29. Lapras - Evolved

Of the 29 Pokemon Ash has owned, not even counting the 4 releases, Ash has owned:

- 21 evolved, middle-stage, or final form Pokemon. It goes up to 25 if you count the 4 he released.

- 6 unevolved.

And of the 6 unevolved, all of them are powerful. Bulbasaur, Squirtle, Corphish and Buizel especially are all powerhouses despite never evolved. Totodile is technically the only weaker one that should have evolved, and Gible was a new capture so its not a big deal just yet.

He owns 21 evolved Pokemon and only 6 that didn't, and even those 6 are damn powerful. I think its great honestly how Ash battles with Pokemon that are of all 3 stages.

One of his unevolved Pokémon is his, show's and whole franchise's mascot. Rest of his unevolved Pokémon get a good amount of screentime, some more so than his evolved ones.

And some of Ash's Pokémon can not evolve further or middle stage. Middle stages counts as unevolved for most people. And some of them are caught evolved. So the point still stands on. He himself doesn't evolve much of his Pokémon. He only evolved 7 of his Pokémon that can evolve himself.

Also, is this your first complaining about complaining thread?

Who cares...?

This is where I think the belief started from. Since Pikachu refused to evolve, people think Ash is against evolution.

When Bulbasaur denied to evolve too, it seemed to further push this theory.

Yet, after that, that never happened again. Why are people basing this on two pokemon?

I don't know where you are getting this from Scott, care to elaborate?

People have always stated that Ash, "never evolves his Pokemon" or, "releases half his Pokemon."

I never understood where this belief came from.

Re: Where do people get the idea that Ash doesn't evolve his Pokemon?

Nope. Most of Ash's teams consist of evo's, except for Johto, which is being made up for now.

I am still somewhat hoping Totodile evolves, but it may not happen.

I looked backed upon episode threads and noticed that you complained that it didn't look like Chimchar would evolve, or Turtwig.

Surely you can answer the question yourself?

The lateness of the evo's was surprising, as Treecko evolved only 65 eps into Hoenn, and I thought the same thing would happen here.

Chimchar always should have evolved earlier, honestly. Giving Monferno only 10 eps of screentime or whatever it was, wasn't a good idea.

Anyone that still thinks this is either stupid or misinformed. It's best not to listen to anybody that stopped watching in Johto.

Re: Where do people get the idea that Ash doesn't evolve his Pokemon?

Scott, pray tell, how exactly did Lapras evolve?

Oops, I meant to say, "final stage."

Like how Tauros, Torkoal and Snorlax (back then), had no evo's.

Usually it's people who stopped watching back in the orginal series who complain about the Pokemon not evolving and then complain how the new episodes are crap. -_-

I never knew, either. But it's just a general lack of knowledge on my part.

I think the rumors comes from not to frequent viewers, filled with a more gaming mindset rather than a story telling view, who used to watch the first seasons, got a little pissed over Ash's early releases of highly evoloved and powered pokemon and his loses at the Johto and Kanto pokemon leauge.
Feeling like the anime didn't go anywhere, they stopped following, continued playing the games, When nothing else was on they watched the show now and then, with Ash in a new region with new unevolved pokemon, and seeing Pikachu almost get his a** kicked by a bird.
I think it's a mix of the nostalgic critique and the reset they make each region.

I'm glad as heck that I watched the later seasons and saw that Ash actually seems to climb in rank each league, if I'm following a series, I want to see a over all progress, which I used to think the writers did not know how to do.
I'm happy to say I was wrong.

Well, I voted for Kanto, but meant to vote for Johto, damn mouse :P. In Kanto, only 4 Pokemon evolved under his care, Charmander, Caterpie, Krabby & Pidgeotto. I don't count Mankey to Primeape since it didn't evolve under his care and training. I don't count Snorlax, since at the time the episode aired, it was believe that Snorlax had no evo. While Johto was lackluster in evolutions, with two of them taking place outside of Johto, those Pokemon still evolved, and he really wasn't crazy about catching Pokemon back then. Though I think that belief did originate from how people expect Johto to be a retread of Kanto, and that Johto is technically a continuation of original series in episode count, and Ash's old clothing as well.

Kind of glad that Advance Generations and DP fixed that, and I do hope that Best Wishes keeps that up as well.
