I'm surprised this topic doesn't pop up more often on forums. I've been on Pokemon forums for well over two years and I have only seen it appear once or twice.

In most games you only have a mom around. It takes place over a period of time however your dad is never home.

A lot of series have missing parents but it's odd how a lot of kids don't have two parents in the games and with no 'explanation'. Even Blue has no parents; Just his adult sister and as his grandfather as his guardians.

I've always thought of it as this:

Red - Father is always away business trips in another region or is a trainer.
Lyra Johto protagonist - Father is just separated from mother; Possibly not in your life.
May Hoenn - .....
Dawn Sinnoh protagonist - Father died when you were a toddler.

I've always thought that Red's Father was Lance, because it just seems like they are simalilar.

Everyone knows Giovanni is Red's father. /sarcasm oh wait that's Ash, my bad.

Seriously though, I just assumed everyone of the protagonists fathers are dead, or just aren't part of their child's life through divorce.

I figure that, in most cases, your father is a nonspecific trainer who's way out there, somewhere. Kind of like Ash's Dad.

Hoenn's kind of a given, but the explanation'd seem to work for Kanto, Johto, and Sinnoh. It's possible that, having such a headstart on you, your father's somewhere in another region that you don't visit in the course of the game.

Clearly they're all cheaters, which is why your mom never speaks about them. :p

Now seriously, I always thought they were all Trainers. At least the father that does appear (Norman), and the father that's directly mentioned (Palmer's old friend) are established as such. I'd expect the trend stays true for the other two. Maybe your father in RGBY/FRLG is a sports player due to the only passing reference, but who knows if that was meant to be taken seriously.

In R/B/Y/D/P/Pt and remakes, I think the dad is alive and is a trainer somewhere
No need to mention R/S/E
In G/S/C and remakes, dad is dead

Your father got a sex change and is your mother.

Then what happened to the mother? :O

Palmer tells Dawn/Lucas that they will keep getting more skilled as their father did. That might possibly indicate that he used to be a Champion; perhaps Cynthia took over and he wandered off elsewhere. This does go to show that Game Freak can't be bothered to think outside the box, though.

The only player character whose father is actually confirmed to be dead, is Michael from XD. Considering that Michael's father is said to have developed the Purify Chamber. and that Cipher kidnap Professor Krane because of his role in that, I suspect that they murdered Michael's father when he refused to give them information about his work. It goes without saying why something like that wouldn't be directly stated in the game (even though the plot climax has Ardos nearly lead to Michael's death), but the theory serves as a good explanation for Michael's drive to go after Cipher practically by himself.

In R/B/Y/FR/LG: the dad is traveling or is divorced

In G/S/C/HG/SS: divorce

In D/P/Pt.: same as R/B/Y/FR/LG

I figured in the originals the father left the mother to become the next Pokemon master, just like her son.

he's probably a wandering trainer who had a one-night-standoff with your mother. O_O

though, that may not be the case with Sinnoh.. didn't it kind of imply that you knew your father at one point? or at least that your father and your mother where in a solid relationship when you where born.
I think he's wandering around somewhere.

sitting on his lazy ass somewhere getting fat eating potato chips I think the dads are probably just trainers

Honestly? I always figured that the Player Characters were all the result of your mother having a one-nighter with some random trainer that they met up with. It just seems likely to me.

When you think about it though, it's not just the PCs, either. I think there are only a handful of times where you walk into a house and see a generic nuclear family. It's usually a kid, a single parent, and maybe some random PokePet. It makes sense, I suppose. I mean really, we're talking about a world where the most popular and widespread profession involves traveling around from town to town, region to region, collecting small animals, usually all by yourself. Marriage and monogamy in general seem like rather impractical institutions.

I don't know if that was meant to be a pun or not... but if it was, bravo, because I'm now imagining some bizarre combination of Pokemon battling and casual sex.

This is one of the reasons why I like Norman so much.

I really see no reason why the dad shouldn't appear in the games. If they can design random NPCs, give them pointless dialouge and what not, then they should give a dad to the player too. Lets hope the BW PC has a dad appearing in the games.

Well my Dad's in his bedroom, sleeping. ?.? Lol j/k I'm all up for the whole one night stand idea.
