Which characters are getting too much or too little development in the SM series?

61 episodes in, and nearly 16 months since the Sun and Moon anime first aired. It introduced us to the enlarged, various characters each with distinctive personas and goals (some more interesting then others). However, when trying to balance proper development amongst 6 main characters along with various other reoccurring characters at the same time, you end up having characters that are either receiving the lion's share, or the end of the stick. Which characters do you find to be over/underdeveloped? Additionally, which ones do you find to fit just fine?

I wouldn't personally say that any of the characters are overdeveloped. I definitely feel that Lillie receives the most focus out of the main characters (aside from Ash, of course) but there's still things we don't know about her, even though most of the major stuff has already been covered.

Sophocles for me is the most underdeveloped. I do, unlike a lot of people, enjoy his character, but I feel like they can do a lot more with him. He doesn't seem to get nearly as much focus as the other main characters. I'd like to know more about him, and see him be the focus of more things. He's also the only main character we haven't seen as a young kid yet, so I'd like to see a bit of his childhood like the rest of the classmates. I'm also hoping that perhaps Molayne will come in at some point and provide a little more focus and/or insight on Sophocles, considering they're cousins in the games.

I've enjoyed what they've done with the characters this season. I think it's neat that we know their immediate families, some aspects of their pasts, their different goals, etc. How the writers further these things throughout the remainder of the series remains to be seen. It is something I feel they've badly slacked on the past few series, so I'm hoping they carry through to the end this time and we continue to get a bit more substance.

Even when it is an Ash episode, Lillie draws the attention to her.

I think that it is intentional, I think with more episodes to come especially filler episodes dedicated to them, I think that we will learn more about them. I think its intentional because Pokemon want to get as many filler episodes as possible haha. But seriously, I think natural development rather than forced is a good thing.

If we're talking about just SM:

Too much: Satoshi.
Too little: Everyone else.

On reflection, Kaki has done... surprisingly little, especially given his introduction as another battling ace/straight man.

Satoshi & Lillie (obvs), Suiren and bizarrely enough the Rocket trio have all had a good share of meaningful screentime, as well as Kukui & Burnet.

some pokemon of Ash classmates would need more battles and they need more catches.

A character or Pokemon can never have too much development, brah. :p

Though we DO have some people this saga who have too little. Namely Sophocles, Mallow, and maybe Lana. When the regional Professor and the friggin' PokeDex get more screentime and a bigger role than you, you're failing...:cautious:

It feels like the writers really don't know what they want to do with Mallow. She's only had two focus episodes, neither of which she did much in, and even Steenee doesn't really do much or show much personality. She also hasn't really shown much progress in her goal, either.

I'd say Sophocles as well to a lesser extent, but I think his only real problem is he lacks a proper goal. Compared to Mallow, he's had more focus episodes and has proven he can carry an episode by himself. Togedemaru has a hell of a lot more personality than Steenee does, and Charjabug seems to be set up to be his battling 'mon considering it'll probably evolve when the group goes to Ula'Ula.

Maybe Lana to an extent as well, but she just hasn't had much to do recently and desperately needs a team change whether it be a capture or Popplio evolving. She had a ton of focus during the Akala arc. At the very least, though, SM56 had some blatant foreshadowing for Popplio learning Sing, so they could go that route next for her as well.

In my opinion, it is true that there is no limit to character development but that adversely affects others' to character develop. You cannot have all characters fully develop at this point in time, some have to be neglected. Therefore, I believe the terms "too much" and "too little" can apply here.

main character, rivals, comrades all need time to shine, but remember this show is about pokemon.
