Hi Everyone,
I've kinda been wanting to play one of the Mystery Dungeon games and was wondering which one you would recommend if I were to get only one for now. The only one I've played was Blue Rescue Team back in 2006. I have access to any of the DS or 3DS games. Thanks for your opinions :)

They are all good. Well, except whatever that gates to infinity was, don't play that one. But all the rest are amazing. I personally felt like Super Mystery Dungeon lived up to its name, it had a great story and lots of Pokémon to use. I still never even finished the post game portion, actually. Only thing about this game is that I find the revamped friend system a little complicated.

I know other people will say that explorers is your best bet, and that's not a bad option. It has a REALLY good story, and while I never played Sky myself, I've only heard good things about how it adds to the base game.

If you've never finished the first game for gameboy or ds, finishing that would also be a good idea. The end of the story is the most touching thing middle school me ever had to go through. Well worth your time.

It's also nice (at least for me) that these games are also a tad challenging. It can take a lot of strategy to actually beat some dungeons, as grinding is not as readily available during the story. Not like, frustratingly hard, but enough to make you feel like you're not playing a game dumbed down for babies.

*NOTE* I said avoid GtI, but really I've only HEARD bad things about it. I've never actually played it myself, so I can't give a proper judgement. So if someone more credible thinks it's worth your time, by all means have at it.

if you haven't played any of the Mystery Dungeons i would go with either Sky or Blue/Red. Sky is usually considered the best PMD entry and builds off of what Time/Darkness and Blue/Red made. Infinity changes up the system a fair amount and Super is closer to a standard Mystery Dungeon series. neither are bad, but i couldn't ever get into Infinity and Super just feels...off. also, Super is a bit more challenging compared to previous entries so starting there could be a bit rough.

If you're looking to get the most out of a current Mystery Dungeon game, then I recommend Sky hands down. The Explorers series has a really great story, substantial character development, a great musical score and access to a lot of Pokemon for you to use on your Exploration team. Sky also builds up from Time/Darkness by having new features, more dungeons, an even better post-game, 5 rather large side missions you can do that gives even more background to characters like your Guild-master and Grovyle, and new items. You can also use the Sky Wondermail generator in case you wanted to add a specific Pokemon, like say another starter, to your team and make the game feel even more immersive. Sky is generally the most favorably viewed of all Dungeon games (as of now) and I guarantee you won't be disappointed. It's a video game that I never get tired of.

If you're looking for something a bit more updated though, then Super Mystery Dungeon is a good choice. It's easily the most difficult entry as of late, but it is still enjoyable with its colorful graphics, awesome music score, access to all Pokemon up to Gen 7 (Fennekin makes a great partner!), whimsical story, and 3D layout. Its story may not be as moving and intricately complex as the Explorer series, but I would place it right underneath.

I highly recommend Explorers of Sky. It's about six years old so it might be a bit hard to find but I'd say it's possibly the best of the Mystery Dungeon series.

Great main storyline with a long reply value, additional "side missions " that develop the characters more, well-developed characters and of course, great music.

Super Mystery Dungeon on 3DS is pretty good, Explorer's of Sky or the original Red/Blue may be an even better pick though.

I'd recommend Explorers of Sky, but Super Mystery Dungeon is a close second. Ultimately, I think it depends on what you want, though. I think the Explorers series is a great conceptual sequel to the MD Rescue Team games and Sky has the most content out of the three, with its additional dungeons, challenges, and Pokemon forms. Explorers of Sky's story is also deeper and more interesting than SMD's, imo, and it has a pretty ample postgame arc, too.

Super Mystery Dungeon is much less like the other games. It's tricky to explain, but recruiting doesn't really happen, at least not in the traditional sense; Pokemon will have missions for you, you'll complete them, and they'll join your team. Except for a few Pokemon, you don't really fight to get new members. Also, as far as I know, you can only get one of each Pokemon to join your team. There are also a few mechanical changes, such as the Looplets, that you'll have to get used to. It's also much more difficult than the other entries. Maybe I'm exaggerating or I didn't play it correctly, but Super Mystery Dungeon is the first genuinely brutal Pokemon game I've ever played. That can make it a lot more fun, though. And in spite of its imperfections, it's still good. I've spent a lot of time finishing everything in it.

Thanks everyone, I have played through all of Blue Rescue Team, though it was about 10 years ago, so maybe I should play it again. Sounds like a tough choice between Explorers of Sky and Super, Maybe I'll have to get both at some point

I would also like to recommend Explorers of Sky. Super Mystery Dungeon is a great game, but I feel like Explorers of Sky works better if you haven't played much. The characters, music and story are all great, and I've honestly replayed it more than any other game. It's more difficult than Super, though, and I would say it takes a bit longer to complete, so I guess it would depend on what you personally prefer as well.
