Didn't see a topic like this, so I'd like to start one. Out of each of the main series Pokémon games you own or would like to collect, which name did you choose for your character and why? Also, is each of those characters a boy or a girl? Lastly, what are the core Pokémon in each character's party?

I try to be creative with my characters in each game, as well as playing both genders. Just because I'm a guy, it doesn't mean I have to play as a boy in every game of a generation, right? Anyway, here are my characters:

GEN I
Pokémon Red Version
Name: JACK
Gender: Portrayed as female
Reason for name: Jack could theoretically be used as a shortened version of Jacqueline.
Core Pokémon: Charizard (starter), Nidoking, Articuno

Pokémon Blue Version
Name: JOHN
Gender: Male
Reason for name: John, like Jack, is a default option.
Core Pokémon: Blastoise (starter), Nidoqueen, Zapdos

Pokémon Yellow Version
Name: ASH
Gender: Male
Reason for name: Yellow is based on the anime, so I could name my character Ash and play it as such.
Core Pokémon: Pikachu (starter), Venusaur (pseudo-starter), Poliwrath
GEN II
Pokémon (Heart)Gold Version
Name: TAYLOR (alternatively Heart)
Gender: Portrayed as female
Reason for name: Taylor can be used for a female character. Heart is derived from HeartGold.
Core Pokémon: Feraligatr (starter), Umbreon, Entei

Pokémon (Soul)Silver Version
Name: OSCAR (alternatively Silver)
Gender: Male
Reason for name: Oscar, like Taylor, is a default name. Silver is derived from, well, silver.
Core Pokémon: Typhlosion (starter), Espeon, Raikou

Pokémon Crystal Version
Name: KRIS
Gender: Female
Reason for name: I can't imagine this character with a name other than Kris. It's too perfect!
Core Pokémon: Meganium (starter), Jolteon, Shiny Gyarados
GEN III
Pokémon Ruby Version
Name: LANDON
Gender: Male
Reason for name: Landon contains "land", in reference to both Team Magma and Groudon
Core Pokémon: Torchic (starter), Seedot, Wingull

Pokémon Sapphire Version
Name: MARINA
Gender: Female
Reason for name: Marina refers to the sea, and also refers to both Team Aqua and Kyogre.
Core Pokémon: Mudkip (starter), Lotad, Taillow

Pokémon FireRed Version
Name: RED
Gender: Male
Reason for name: I prefer the canon name for this version of the character.
Core Pokémon: Venusaur (starter), Raichu, Snorlax

Pokémon LeafGreen Version
Name: LEAF
Gender: Female
Reason for name: I prefer the fan name for this character.
Core Pokémon: Charizard (starter), Wigglytuff, Lapras
GEN IV
Pokémon Diamond Version
Name: Chronus
Gender: Male
Reason for name: Chronus means "time".
Core Pokémon: Torterra (starter), Rampardos, Murkrow

Pokémon Pearl Version
Name: Astra
Gender: Female
Reason for name: Astra means "star", though some people assume it means "space".
Core Pokémon: Empoleon (starter), Bastiodon, Misdreavus

Pokémon Platinum Version
Name: Plato
Gender: Male
Reason for name: Plato is a shortening of "platinum".
Core Pokémon: Infernape (starter), Staraptor, Garchomp
GEN V
Pokémon Black Version
Name: Jet
Gender: Female
Reason for name: Derived from "jet black".
Core Pokémon: Serperior (starter), Simipour, Stoutland

Pokémon White Version
Name: Stark
Gender: Male
Reason for name: Derived from "stark white".
Core Pokémon: Emboar (starter), Simisage, Liepard

Pokémon Black Version 2
Name: Grey
Gender: Male
Reason for name: Grey is a mixture of black and white.
Core Pokémon: Haxorus (partner), Simisear, Mandibuzz

Pokémon White Version 2
Name: Rainbow
Gender: Female
Reason for name: A rainbow contains many colours, so it's like the opposite of black and white.
Core Pokémon: Samurott (starter), Musharna, Braviary
GEN VI
Pokémon X
Name: Maximus ("Max" for short)
Gender: Male
Reason for name: Both Maximus and Max contain "X".
Core Pokémon: Greninja (starter), Venusaur (pseudo-starter), Swirlix

Pokémon Y
Name: Payslea ("Pay" for short)
Gender: Female
Reason for name: Both Payslea (this spelling, at least) and Pay contain "Y".
Core Pokémon: Delphox (starter), Blastoise (pseudo-starter), Spritzee

Pokémon X or Y (second save file)
Name: Zack
Gender: Male
Reason for name: In keeping with the surrogate Pokémon Z theme, the name Zack starts with "Z", plus it'd be awesome to play as a character with my real-life nickname.
Core Pokémon: Chesnaught (starter), Charizard (pseudo-starter), Lucario

Pokémon Omega Ruby
Name: Terra
Gender: Female
Reason for name: Terra literally means "land" or "earth".
Core Pokémon: Swampert (starter), Latios, Mawile

Pokémon Alpha Sapphire
Name: Sean
Gender: Male
Reason for name: Sean contains the word "sea".
Core Pokémon: Sceptile (starter), Latias, Sableye

Pokémon OR or AS (second save file)
Name: Sky (alternatively Delta)
Gender: Female
Reason for name: Sky is a reference to Rayquaza's turf, whereas Delta is following the theme of a surrogate Pokémon Delta Emerald.
Core Pokémon: Blaziken (starter), Flygon, Milotic
GEN VII
Pokémon Sun
Name: Merlin
Gender: Male
Reason for name: Merlin is the name of the wizard who served King Arthur in Arthurian legend; it is also in reference to the apparent theme of alchemy in Sun and Moon, as well as the protagonist of the brilliant television series The Adventures of Merlin
Core Pokémon: Rowlet (starter)

Pokémon Moon
Name: Morgan (alternatively Morgana)
Gender: Female
Reason for name: Morgan le Fay is an enchantress depicted in Arthurian legend; the name Morgan is also in reference to the theme of alchemy that seems to be in Sun and Moon, whereas the name Morgana is in reference to the Lady Morgana from The Adventures of Merlin
Core Pokémon: Litten (starter)

Pokémon Sun or Moon (second save file)
Name: Arthur
Gender: Male
Reason for name: Arthur Pendragon is the name of the king in Arthurian legend; it is also in reference to Prince Arthur, the deuteragonist of The Adventures of Merlin
Core Pokémon: Popplio (starter)

I usually play as a guy unless the character model is just bleh (like B/W and B2/W2). X and Y I have one of each. Boy or girl almost always named Z (which is my IRL nickname) cept in FR where I named him KC (my other nickname from years ago), and I think Y where her name's Zoraya (my actual name).

Let's see....

LeafGreen: My character's name is Red and he's a boy. Why? Because Red is a canon character. Incidentally, his official Starter was Bulbasaur, but his team consists of Venusaur, Charizard, Blastoise, Pikachu, Snorlax, and Dragonite. Not Lapras because I like to have the region's pseudo in my team.

SoulSilver: My character's name is Matt and he's a boy. Why? Because when I got Silver (my first Pokemon game) I named my character Matt in honor of my favorite Digidestined. SoulSilver is the spiritual successor to that character. His official Starter was Totodile, but his team currently consists of Meganium, Typhlosion, Feraligatr, Ampharos, Scizor, and Tyranitar.

OmegaRuby: My character's name is Emma and she's a girl. She's the spiritual successor to my Emerald character. Her official Starter was Torchic, but her team consists of Sceptile, (Mega) Blaziken, Swampert, Manectric, Salamence, and Metagross.

Platinum: My character's name is Kris, a girl, and she's the spiritual successor to one of my Crystal version files. Her official Starter was Piplup, but her team consists of Torterra, Infernape, Empoleon, Luxray, Garchomp, and Togekiss.

Black: My character's name is Caitlin (mostly because I like that name,) and she's a girl. Her official Starter was Oshawott, but her team consists of Serperior, Emboar, Samurott, Zebstrika, Gothitelle, and Hydreigon.

X: My character's name is Nate and he's the spiritual successor of my now defunct White 2 file. His official Starter was Chespin, but his team consists of Chesnaught, Delphox, Greninja, Aegislash, Sylveon, and Goodra.

Y: My character's name is Amy and she's a girl. She is the spiritual successor to another of my Crystal files. Her official Starter was Fennekin, but her team consits of Meganium, Typhlosion, Feraligatr, Heracross, (Mega) Tyranitar, and Togekiss.

AlphaSapphire: My current main file. His name is Tony, a boy, and he's named after me. My official Starter was Treecko, but my team consists of (Mega) Venusaur, Houndoom, Milotic, Manectric, Scizor, and Dragonite.

Bonus:

Emerald: Character's name is Emma. Her team consists of Blaziken,Sceptile, Swampert, Absol, Salamence, Metagross
HeartGold: Character's name is Amy. Her team will consist of Meganium, Azumarill, Ninetales, Crobat, Espeon, and Tyranitar.
Diamond: Character's name was Alec. His team consisted of Torterra, Rapidash, Floatzel, Staraptor,Luxray, and Lucario.
White: Character's name was Alex. His team consisted of Emboar, Simisage, Jellicent, Druddigon, Reuniclus, and Braviary.
White 2: Character's name was Nate. His team consisted of Bulbasaur, Vaporeon, Ampharos, Braviary, Volcarona, Hydreigon

Wow BW had the best male character model IMO.

I usually play as the guy, but Lucas's design looks ridiculously bad so I made an exception. He looks more french, ahem Kalosian than Callum.

I feel so unoriginal haha, I usually play as the boy, and name him after myself. When I restart a game I usually try out the girl, or I'll try to play as one of my friends and make a team for them, naming the character after them. Although, I do remember during 4th gen, I played Pearl once I restarted it as Dawn and had Piplup, Buneary, Pachirisu, and Ampibom, I think I gave her a Togekiss and Cherubi too, I just remember it being an incredibly hard run through. I also remember then getting HG and SS, HG I played as myself, but SS I played as Dawn once again, with Piplup, Buneary, Pachirisu, Mamoswine, Cyndaquil and Togekiss, I remember predicting that her Buneary and Cyndaquil would evolve eventually so her final team was Piplup, Lopunny, Pachirisu, Mamoswine, Typhlosion, and Togekiss, it was quite a fun run-through.

As for the VC releases this month, I'm in a predicament. I'm not sure whether to play as myself using my original team in my Blue version and then in Yellow play as Ash, or whether I just do a nuzlocke, but if I do that I haven't got any idea what name to use.

I usually name my avatar after myself. I end up playing multiple versions with different teams but here's my fav layouts for story runs and the games I used them in. I do use a lot of the same pokemon though because I like using pokemon that I'm familiar with. My current X avatar dresses in black and red in contrast to the default appearance.

Blue: Venusaur, Golem, Jolteon, Starmie, Ninetales, Dragonite

Silver: Meganium, Heracross, Nidoking, Starmie, Skarmory, Tyranitar

Ruby: Swampert, Gardevoir, Manectric, Swellow, Breloom, Aggron

Platinum: Torterra, Staraptor, Gyarados, Jolteon, Houndoom, Lucario

White/White 2: Samurott, Galvantula, Ferrothorn, Reuniclus/Chandelure, Mienshao/Lucario, Krookodile/Gliscor

X: Greninja, Venusaur, Talonflame, Lucario, Gardevoir, Tyrantrum

Alpha Sapphire/Emerald: Sceptile, Gardevoir, Swellow, Sharpedo, Ninetales/Camerupt, Aggron

I end up going default names for many of my games, but whenever I reset them (something I don't do often) I'll change it up to variants of TouyaShiro among other things. I might start changing that with future Generations, especially since it's possible that trainer personalisation is a well-received feature that could come back. I've already got a start on that with my most recent pickups, Y and Alpha Sapphire, to contrast my default named X and Omega Ruby (though it's still personalised in X instead of retaining the default appearance).

In AS, my Brendan is named Takeru, as I'm going for a Kamen Rider Ghost theme - my Pokémon nicknames follow suit with various Damashii, like my starter as Robin Hood.
This year's Kamen Rider goes through the series seeking out the Luminary Eyecons, devices that contain the souls of historical figures throughout history, like Billy the Kid, Goemon and Musashi. (And yes, for that latter one, someone's already drawn the Musashi Damashii in place of Musashi/Jesse in at least one image that crosses the two together.)

In Y, my Serena is named Natsumi. In a similar fashion to the above Takeru, this is a reference to Kamen Rider Decade - this time, the joke behind the name is that I'll be naming her "Natsumikan" when my friends choose a nickname to call the character by at the beginning of the game, in turn making it a reference to Tsukasa Kadoya (Kamen Rider Decade) using that nickname for Natsumi Hikari. Alternatively, since I haven't progressed to that point yet (been focusing on AS to get to the BuzzNav), I could go for Natsumelon, the name secondary rider Daiki Kaito (Kamen Rider Diend) uses for her.

I name all of the female characters after myself, while I give the male characters the masculine form of my name if I have to play as a guy. It's been like that since Gen I. X and Y broke the trend of me playing as nothing but female characters because I liked the male's customizable clothes better.

The Pokemon that will always be on my teams are Charizard and Electabuzz along with female Pyroar being a permanent addition as of Gen VI.

I found a better name choice for my character in Pokémon Y. Rather than Evelynn, I've decided to go with Paisley, which will be spelled "Payslea" ("Pay" for short) in order to match it with my character's name in X, Maximus ("Max" for short). Also, my female Pokémon in X have nicknames starting with "P", and my male Pokémon in Y have nicknames starting with "M", so the theme extending to my characters in both versions is something I'd like to try.

By the way, in case the hidden message isn't clear regarding "P" and "M", they're both taken from the Japanese name of the franchise, Poketto Monsutā!

Really? I thought it was a mod that's been rumoured to have been C&D'd Sounds interesting! Then you name a Voltorb Poké Ball...

Listing the gender and names of the first runs. If there are any extras that I can remember, I'll specify.

Game: Gender/Name

Red: Male/Ash
Gold: Male/Gold
Crystal: Female/Crystal
Ruby: Male/Ruby
Emerald: Female/Ruby
LeafGreen: Female/Tayuya (yes, from Naruto)
Pearl: Female/Elly (I think it was the name of an OC I had at that time)
Platinum: Female/Dawn
SoulSilver: Female/Lyra (I think I did the default)
Black: Female/ (I don't remember)
Black2: Female/Hanamiya (from Kuroko no Basket)
Black2 restart: Male/Rei (from Free)
Y: Male/Hanamiya (again from Kuroko no Basket)
OmegaRuby: Female/Christia (idk just a name that got stuck in my head)

Then you name a Voltorb Poké Ball...
I'm actually considering having an Electrode in my party in Red Version and nicknaming it "MARU", which is taken from its Japanese name of "Marumine". The word maru in Japanese literally means "circle", so I'd basically have an animated Poké Ball named Circle. :ROFLMAO:

I always used variations of my name, or some of my nicknames. But my current re-re-run of Alpha Sapphire, I'm doing an "origin story" type run for Cynthia, so I chose girl and named her, well, Cynthia (duh), gave her a lvl 1 Gible and lvl 1 riolu and on we go :) really enjoying it for now

In my first game, Gold, I named my character As. It was supposed to be "Ash", but I didn't really know english (beyond recognizing some of the letters), and I didn't know how Ash's name is spelt.

In Sapphire I named my female trainer, Alice. Ever since then I've been naming every trainer I use as Alice, and I have created an entire story for her and her adventures in each region.

I'm not quite sure why I choose "Alice". I think I just really liked the name back then. Sapphire also impressed me so much as a kid, that it really made me feel like I was on an adventure, exploring a region, achieving great things. I think that's what made me want to imagine a story for Alice that continued onto the other games. With time, she got an actual design and all that stuff. Surprisingly, though, I never actually drew a proper picture of her besides just sketches. I should probably fix that. She's been with me for so many years after all!

Wow, okay, I now have to consider character names for a possible Sun and Moon release. Hm...I guess I could play as a male in Moon named "Wolf", and a female in Sun named "Fox". Or I could think of a different name...

From what I remember:

Ruby - RUBY (male)
Sapphire - SAPHIRE (female)
Emerald - MAY (female)
FireRed - ASH (male)

Platinum - DAWN (female)
HeartGold - my name (male)
SoulSilver - my name (male)

White - my name (male)
White 2 - my name (male)

X - my name (male)
Omega Ruby - my name (male)
Alpha Sapphire - my name (male)

In the earlier games I went with a childhood nickname called "Speedy", but for X it was RED (which for some reason I decided to put in all caps) and Omega Ruby it's "Neos." Always male.

I've never had a set pattern. Sometimes I use the color names, other times I've used the canon names, and I know one or two times I used Ash. With White and White 2 I actually had a neat pattern going on.

For White my name was Tony and for White 2 it was Newton. Y'know, a letter short of 'New Tony' hehehe.

For Y and OR I didn't really strike me to make a pattern there so the names are my real name and the short version of my real name respectively. I think I did that because Gen VI gave player much better connectivity and I was around a huge number of people who were also playing the games. Maybe it was because it's much easier to remember one name assigned to a person rather than two or three.

I remember for a while my brother used to run around with the name Pepsi.

Personally I just make my character me. So, except in the case of some themed replays, I'm always male and Ben.
