Based on what we've seen of Ash's faculties as a trainer, which pokemon type is Ash best at trainning and using?

I'd say he needs to focus on more Ghost-Types. On what kinds of Pokémon, Satoshi is more adept at using quick and agile Pokémon (Pikachu and Yayakoma are more recent examples) and strong heavy hitters (Goukazaru). I think he needs to focus on slow and bulky Pokémon (such as Cotoise and Dodaitose who both never got any wins).

I never imagined i'd see someone suggesting he'd train Ghost-Types, it's quite an interesting point of view. I think i can understand what you say MizuTaipu, i've always wanted to see him experimenting more with a pokemon type that's not his "forte". Ash/Satoshi's battle strategies remind me of the warrior class in MMORPGs (which are frontal, kind of brutal and usually powerful, with high defense or attack power, etc) with perhaps a little bit of agility (for Pikachu mainly) but not much more really, so perhaps to focuse in "slow and bulky" pokemon is what he needs to really "be the very best"? (still, it's unlikely that we see it happening, Ash is too good-hearted to use naturally naughty pokemon like the ghost and dark type. A pity, though) I would like to see him givin a try to psychic pokemon aswell, but since he's just not that type of character that might not work out for him since they require trainning in a whole different way.

He should focus on whichever Pokemon he strikes up a friendship with. Friendship and caring for your Pokemon rules in the Animeverse.

Surprised no one's mentioned ground. He already has some pretty powerful one's. Donphan, Gliscor, Torterra and Krookodile. Palpitoad is all right and has lots of room for improvement. And holy shit imagine if he focused on training up Gible. He could add a mega to his ground team. Plus it's a ground team with 6 different types.

Seriously, he already has an awesome ground team in his arsenal, and if he ever evolved Palpitoad and Gible, he'd be amazing.

I've always thought that Ash's team would be awesome if it was Pikachu, Garchomp, Charizard, Heracross, Blastoise, and Venusaur (evolve Squirtle, Gible, and Bulbasaur) and Blam!! 5 Megas in one team!

From what we saw, there are 3 major candidates;
- Grass; Sceptile and Torterra are fully evolved, strong Pokemon. Also his Bayleef is the only Johto Pokemon that is evolved, plus a very good tactian, too. And there is Bulbasaur which has decided not to evolve but still on par with a fully evolved Grass starter(its battle against Meganium). There is also Leavanny and Snivy.
- Fire; Charizard and Infernape. No further explanation needed for them. Pignite is much like Bayleef. Torkoal is a considerable battler, too. Cyndaquil is the only insignificant Fire Pokemon Ash ever had.
- Flying; Besides Unfezant, almost every flying type turned into a boss under Ash's training. Especially Swellow and Staraptor. Gliscor is one of the best battlers. Noctowl is not one of the best but it is no slouch either. Also Charizard is part of flying type.

It can be hard to become an Elite Four and even harder to become champion with Flying type. If it's not Normal/Flying or Fairy/Flying, the first type that would pop in our head will be primary type. Otherwise I don't see a problem with Staraptor/Crobat/Charizard/Altaria/Gliscor/Gyarados kinda line-up winning the title.

Since Grass-type one of the underpowered types, Fire would be best for Ash to focus on.

I disagree completely on Cyndaquil, I think he was a great battler in Johto and was usually Ash's go to after Pikachu.

In terms of type, I would say that Fire or Ground would be his best bet to focus on.

Fire:

Charizard
Quilava
Torkoal
Infernape
Pignite
Talonflame

Would be a great team.

Ground:

Donphan
Torterra
Gliscor
Gible
Palpitoad
Krookodile

Would also be one hell of a team.

After this, his best bet would be Grass or Flying.

Why should Ash focus on any type? One of his greatest strengths is his ability to take any Pokémon and turn it into a capable fighter. Focusing on one specific type would probably compromise his versatility.
