Red, Leaf, and Blue.
Lyra, Ethan, and Silver.
Brendan, May, and Wally.
Dawn, Pearl, and Lucas.

You can say Kris, Ethan, and Silver if you want, but I don't consider her to be a seprate character from Lyra so I didn't list her.

For me, it's a tie between the Gen 1, Gen 2, and Gen 4 trio. I don't think of the Hoenn trio as a trio. I prefer them individually with the protagonist, or as I think of it, May-Brendan and May-Wally.

I like the Ethan-Lyra-Silver trio a lot, but I have to admit it's mostly because I really like Silver as he's well thought out compared to most of the other rivals.
The Gen4 trio is cool too since you can actually battle two characters as "rivals" instead of just one.
 
Lyra, Ethan, and Silver because Ethan/Lyra perfectly complements Silver.
 
Lyra, Ethan and Silver. Definitely. It's probably due to the fact that I just love Silver, and Lyra is my favorite female protagonist and I pair these two together.
 
even though it goes against any nature i have (i started with fire red and emerald, so i should be biased.) i prefer silver over all the rivals, but i still wanted to have a huge triple battle in the end of hg/ss where you fight against THREE PEOPLE all with two pokemon, so its you, silver, and lyra/ethan, against red, leaf, and blue. (I mean think about how epic that would be!) anyway, i guess that means i have to say the gen 1 trio, even though i never realy liked them that much.

(exept for the fact that garry had his pokemon, apearantly, die while fighting team rocket, but we cant prove that. still raises his epic meter through the roof.)

There's also Brendan, May, Wally, and Steven cuartet. But there it's like, each one just going around on their own.
It's like those friends you only see once in a very long time.
 
I like Kris/Lyra, Ethan, and Silver the most, mainly because of Silver, but I kinda like Brendan, May, and Wally also. At least you got to battle both of them instead of just one of them. I haven't played DPPt in a while so I don't really remember, but I don't think you get to battle the opposite gender protagonist, right?
 
Red/Leaf/Blue because Red was the very first pokemon character I ever played as back in 1998...a close second is Gold/Silver/Kris, but only because of Silver.
 
Dynamic-wise: Lucas, Dawn and Barry have the best overall dynamic (the NPC's actually interact with each other in at least one scene!)

Individual Design: Red, Leaf and Blue are my favorites by far.

Because of nostalgia though, I'm going to go with Ethan, Lyra(Kris) and Silver.

As for May, Brendan and Wally...as much as I love May, I just really hate, hate HATE the way they handled the NPC rivals in Gen III. So much potential, so wasted....
 
The DPPt trio! WOOT!!

They have the best dynamic in-game, IMO. I love each of the characters in it. Lucas is pretty cool, Dawn's my favorite female PC, and I enjoy every moment with Barry in-game.

But I also like Ethan, Lyra (Not Kris), and Silver. They all complement each other really well.
 
I don't know if I can choose.

Lucas, Dawn, & Barry definitely have the best in-game dynamic, as they all interact with each other. And they all team up to fight each Galactic at each of the lakes which I thought was awesome.

Ethan, Silver, & Lyra all clash so much that it looks incredibly good when they are together. They look better together in their new designs then their old (since their looks clash more now).

Red, Blue, & Leaf are totally dynamic too since we've seen them all together since the beginning. So they're definitely a favorite and are kind of have a seniority over the others.

Brendan, May, & Wally..I want to like them but like Envoy said they were wasted potential. However, they were the first to introduce a trio. Hopefully, a RSE remake/sequel might fix it and they will have as much dynamic as the other trios.
 
i'm gonna have to go with gold/silver/kris (or lyra, though IMO they are most definitely not interchangeable) - i'm not a huge johto fan, but they are by far the cutest trio. i just can't envision any of the other trios being "friends forever", you know? leaf arrived too late for me to think of her as a gen I character, may&brendan never struck me as being true friends, and depending on who you play as in gen IV either lucas/dawn is off doing their assistant-y thing all by their lonesome. i like the red/green, player/wally & player/barry interactions, but as far as trios go the johto kids are the best <3
 
Red, Leaf, Green(We got LeafGreen here, so shouldn't his name be Green?) my favorite, Kotone(Lyra), Hibiki(Ethan), Silver my second favorite.

Ethan/Lyra/Silver trio works the best. Silver has the most development as a rival, which is always a good thing. And Lyra is simply my favourite female protagonist.
 
I luuuuuv the Lyra/Ethan/Silver line! Just how they interact and play a better role in the game. :)

But I also like the Dawn, Pearl, and Lucas one.
 
Gold, Silver, and Kris are my favorite, just for the sheer awesomness of Silver.
Blue, Red, and Green come in a close second if you take Pokemon Special into account (I'm guessing you don't though, so it's just second then)
 
Ethan/Lyra & Silver b/c Silver is an awesome villain. Blue comes in second b/c of him being the only one who's a champion
