To me Gary ticks Ash off a lot since they have had their rivalry ever since they were little kids (before they turned 10 and began on their journeys). Each time they meet Gary would have some kind of snide remark to make Ash mad. Though when he decided to become a researcher he became friendlier towards Ash and even gives him good advice (even though Ash prefers not to listen to it, in the end he realizes Gary was right).

Paul on the other hand, Ash seems to steam up because of their opposite training styles. He also insults Ash, but his words come with the intention of putting him down for being pathetic (Gary seemed to tease Ash rather than call him worthless or pathetic). I would say that Ash “hates” Paul on a different level than Gary. This is because of the way he treats his Pokémon in battle and in training.

Each time he meets with Gary in the DP series, Gary clearly comes with a new friendly atmosphere about him. However, Ash just gets mad whenever Gary gives him advise or decides against Ash’s choices (taking on J’s goons in Ill-Will Hunting! or when he calls him “Ashy-boy” and guesses exactly why Gligar left Ash’s training in “Fighting Fear with Fear!”). It seems that Gary just wants to be more of a friend to Ash rather than a rival. To me it seems that Ash is just looking at their rivalry as how it used to be rather than what it is now.

Every time Paul comes around, Ash does his famous “It’s Paul!” It seems every time the two cross paths Ash is the one that loses his cool first (for that matter there aren’t that many times that Paul loses his in a conversation with Ash). The only time Paul actually gets furious with Ash is in “Chim-Charred!” because of Ash being a hypocrite by entering the Wallace Cup to make his Pokemon stronger even though Ash and Dawn talked down to Paul when he entered the Hearthome tag battle. Paul says something smart and walks off and Ash is always left ticked off. At first, Paul never even thought of Ash as a rival. Now it seems that Paul at least realizes that Ash is a good trainer.

Who do you think makes Ash go off the handle more?

No WAY does Gary tick Ash off more, ESPECIALLY not now.

Paul is cruel to his Pokemon, there's absolutely NO way Ash can stand Paul more than Gary. The fact that Ash reacts the way he does whenever Paul comes around is because he's nice. He always looks for the good in people, and he'll continue to do that until Pokemon ends.

But definitely... Paul ticks him off more.

Yah gotta say Paul.
When Gary beat Ash a few times, it annoyed him sure.
Gary's more like a pinch in your side, its there and you feel it. It annoys you but not too much. Paul, boy he's more like a brick wall. You can't get around him and you'll run into him.

I think Paul kinda ticks off Ash a bit more...when I think about it the way Paul treats his pokemon (while making them extra tough) gets Ash really upset since Ash is a good boy who does everything like a hero...its almost like how Silver would piss off Gold or Lyra in the games except without dialouge

Gary mildly ticks Ash off whenever he outdoes him. Paul REALLY FREAKING PISSES ASH OFF. Gary is a childhood friend turned turned bitter rival turned friend/friendly rival for Ash. Paul, however, goes against everything Ash stands for and treats his Pokemon like crap. Ash can't stand that.

Obviously, it's Paul. Ash and Paul's training styles are different, and they don't agree with each other. Plus, Paul doesn't even care about his Pokemon while Ash does.

Paul, defliently, because that's what Paul does as part of his stradagy. Let's face it, Paul really only won the tag battle because Ash was so ticked that he didn't use stradegy. Paul played Ash like a fittle because Ash wasn't thinking clearly and tried to fight Paul head on. If he had been thinking, he could've one. Paul ticked Ash off on perpose to throw him off his game. That and Paul is a jerk to his Pokemon, he practically tramatized Chimchar.

Gary was annoying to Ash because he was a stronger trainer for awhile, until Ash finally beat Gary. Paul is even more annoying because he's not a better trainer, he's just a better stradagist. He sees Pokemon for winning, and when he doesn't lose, he blaims his Pokemon when its his fault for not training them well enough. I think Chimchar is a perfect example of that, under Paul's training, he was Paul's weakest Pokemon, under Ash's training, Chimchar is now a very powerful Infernape that has repeatedly defeated one of Paul's strongest Pokemon, Ursaring. What annoys Ash about Paul is Paul simply doesn't care about training Pokemon, only getting the strongest pokemon and winning. And Paul can't see why Ash critizes him for doing things that Ash ends up doing, its not the fact they're doing them, its how they're done. Ash does training to make himself and his Pokemon stronger, Paul does it simply to have the strongest Pokemon.

So basically, Paul is purposely annoying and an overall jerk, Gary was annoying simply cause he kept outdoing Ash.

Paul.

Gary did get on Ash's nerves, especially since he was always one step ahead of Ash, but aside from Ash's willingness to beat him, it didn't really bother him that much. Whereas Paul is such a jackass to his Pokemon and those around him, you can tell that seriously pisses Ash off.

Paul since he is cruel, merciless, and efficient like Silver at first.

Gary was nice, happy, and smart.

Gary just kinda was a dick, so that annoyed him, but Paul on the other hand has completely opposing views of raising pokemon to Ash, so I'm going with Paul.

Gary was "ha ha I'm a dick I'm better than you", and was basically doing it for teh lolz.

But Paul is "I'm better than you", but is doing it because he's everything Ash isn't.

Paul pisses Ash off just by being there whereas Gary tends to go out of his way to tick Ash off.

So yeah, Paul.

Ash really likes Gary. He just doesn't like being proven wrong. Just look at the episode his Gligar evolves into Gliscor. Gary really just wanted to help. Ash seemed a little peeved, but only because he was annoyed about is Gligar and the fact that Gary was one upping him which he doesn't like ANYONE doing. He even said thank you and they departed happily. [:

Paulllllll. For SUREEEE.

Paul.

Why?

He treats Pokemon cruelly for the lulz. And Ash doesn't approve of that, Which is why Ash has to beat Paul's a** in the league. We all know Ash cares for Pokemon than he does himself, all the more reason for Paul to piss him off more.

IMO, back then when Gary was still Ash's rival, he ticked him off more than Paul does now. Believe it or not, Ash has matured some and nowadays he just fumes over the way Paul treats his team. Back then he was ready to strangle Gary- Ash was an immature brat and Gary was a total jerk with an ego the size of Jupiter.

Wow, I can only guess how that Ash would've reacted to Paul. The thing is, even though he met someone kinda like Paul in the Kanto arch, the guy with the Sandshrew, at least that guy was trying to strengthen his pokemon, not just throw away the ones he sees as weak.

Also, am I the only one that noticed in his most rescent appearence, Gary seemed kinda weak compared to his old self? I mean he wasn't able to do much at all to Saturn's Toxicroak, which is of course really strong but still. Maybe its cause he's a researcher, not a trainer anymore.
