These three Grand Festivals were all pretty interesting because they introduced us to the contest portion of the series. It seems that contests are not going to be included in the new generation of Pokemon. I was looking back at the older episodes that focused on the Grand Festivals.

To me each festival got better than the one before it. Each festival seemed to focus on a specific area of battle. The Hoenn festival was the first one so it was a mixture between battling styles along with appeals. Kanto was a great festival because May and Drew had an awesome display of moves and combinations. This was seem in Drew’s “Dragon Razor Wind” or May’s “Fusion of Fire and Water” based off of Tucker’s Battle Dome combo he used again Ash. The Sinnoh GF along with Sinnoh Contests seemed to focus on appeals rather than battles.

This could be seen in the fact that Dawn rarely knocked out her opponents instead she won most of her matches when the clock ran out and she had more points. In most double battles in contests, at least one Pokemon on each side gets knocked out and the battle ends in an epic one on one (Drew’s Absol vs. May’s Combusken is a great example). In the Sinnoh GF, the double battles were great but no Pokemon was really knocked out on either side (Flareon and Gabite were knocked out right before the timer went off). All of these battles were really combination and appeal battles rather than defeating at least one Pokemon on either side.

So, based on the intense battles and combos seen in each GF which one do you think was the best?

I personally liked May Vs. Drew because I loved their chemistry. Zoey and Dawn... Had Dawn one I would have said Sinnoh, but Zoey won again.

I say Kanto GF. Drew vs May is always will be my favorite contest battle...

I liked Sinnoh's the most. Ursula vs. Dawn and Nando vs. Zoey won me over. I don't remember seeing more epic battles than these since...I don't know.

The Hoenn GF was pretty meh, IMO.

And the Kanto GF was an improvement over the last, but the battles weren't as enjoyable as Sinnoh's, IMO.

I haven's seen Dawn's GF yet, but since I'm not crazy about her and dislike all her rivals (and the outcome) then it's pretty safe to say that I like May's Kanto GF the best. The battles between her and Drew were really intense.

I'm going to say the Sinnoh one because we got two decent battles and not just one like the others.

I say, Kanto was the best one by far.
I loved May's V.S Drew fight, that was just epic.
Than Harley's too.
D/P was the weaker one in my opinion.
I like Dawn, but they rarley showed some of hers.
The only battles I liked in that Grand Festival was Zoey V.S Nando and Zoey V.S Dawn. Poor Jessie got cut off for some reason, which was really one of the few I was looking forward to.
Than on top of the fact that Dawn lost to Zoey, I was hopping Dawn would win against Zoey if she's in fact going to leave. Every characer who's going to leave, deserves to beat there main rival.

Definetly the Sinnoh GF.While I adore the Haruka vs Shuu Kanto GF battle to death(I have lost count about how many times I have re-watched it...)this Grand Festival simply had much more content.

We got:

-An amazing main-rival battle(whatever it is better than the last or just on par is arguable, but it cant be denied that it had quality)
-nice dynamics
JESSIE GETTING IN THE TOP 4+FUNNY STUFF+CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT
-Pokemon rivalries(Well,sort off...at last continuity)
-Naoshi vs Nozomi(gosh, where do I begin with this one?one of the best battles in the show.Period)
-URARA OH GOSH SHE IS SO cooooooool
-With leads me to my next point: Appeals.Pretty nice appeals indeed.
-Satoshi not interrupting the action for his training/captures/evolutions!
-References to old stuff (the old ribbon, the YAKUSOKU of Hikari and Nozomi....).Continuity is always a plus!

And probably other stuff I forgot.

That Zoey vs Nando was just epic.

The rest? Meh.

Sinnoh wins, but just by a hair

Sinnoh. It had Zoey v Nando and Zoey v Dawn.

And it SHOULD have had Dawn v Jessie, but it didn't. It had a BS crap battle between Dawn v Jessie. I THINK. I can't remember. It was too short. =.=;

Whatever. xD The Sinnoh GF was my favorite. T'was amazing. And the Dawn v Zoey battle is still my all time favorite... even though it saddens me... no matter how many times I watch it the outcome is always the same! D:

It would have been better if they would have made the Sinnoh Festival it about 5 or 6 episodes and make it less rushed (DP176) or too timely (DP175). The finale could have been maybe 2-2.5 episodes.

And for the record, writers, five minus one equals four. Then four minus one equals three. So really, Dawn was left with only three rivals in two episodes. There were also too many undesirable surprises. Take DP175, for example. Dawn had about 3/4 of her points drained while Ursula only had about 1/6. In about 15+ seconds, she zoomed in and took the victor.

My reaction to first seeing DP175 was . How can they possibly stretch five minutes into twenty-two? It just does not make much sense at all.

I decided to watch DP176, but after seeing the tragically unamusing battle in DP175, I couldn't. Looking at pictures made it look boring. I did watch DP177, but got kind of bored a little into the episode, so I did not watch it all.

Shimura > Koyama > Natsume/Shinjo > Iwane
The animation did not stand out much even though it had some of my favorite animation directors. DP174 made me feel as if I was watching DP122 all over again. I really wouldn't say Koyama was entirely bad, but about 95% of it was. The other two were just all right, not awesome, but all right.

I remember watching the Kanto rerun, and noticing May crying after losing got me really emotional, and got me thinking about my experiences in life. Otherwise, Dawn just lost and smiled. Personally, the Kanto is the best, by far no doubt.

After me hoping this would be the end of all contests, I really am not so reliable on this one. I would sincerely love the final grand festival to be the mother of all grand festivals, with some excitement and heart pumping suspense. Something like a Pokemon has the urge to begin to disobey its trainer and wants to try to kill it or the opponent, long after winning the whole thing, is revealed to be a cheater.

I'm terribly sorry to the Sinnoh lovers, but to me it was just terrible. It takes guts and friendship to get to the final, obeying that "let's rush everything" command made by the writers.

I love Urara however.

Hmm, I'm think I'm going to give the Kanto and Sinnoh ones a tie, overall, for reasons others have said.

The Hoenn one wasn't really good. It made May look like an amateur... Because of the way her arc had been written, it's almost like May didn't really belong there...

Then Kanto one was good, but I feel that it's only because of the amazing May v Drew battle. This time, May's arc was a little bit more believable, but still only one loss... come on... still, I went into this one expecting to be underwhelmed and I was actually pleasantly surprised, but that's solely due to the Drew v May match

The Sinnoh one had the better buildup but it felt short, not that it was bad far from it, but it felt short of what it could have been. I think since the arc and the buildup was very good, I expected too much from it and got a bit disappointed. Togekiss never should have been introduced as both Cyndaquil and Buneary both deserved the screentime it got far more than it did. Ursula needed to make it farther and Jessie making it to the semis... way to kill any credibility the GF has. Still, the battles were better visually as I truly felt I was watching what contests were meant to be. Quite frankly, if I were to make a top 5 of the best contest battles in the anime, 3-4 of them would be Sinnoh contests.

Quite frankly, in terms of quality, the Sinnoh GF was better than the Kanto one, but not by much.

I agree with Gible. But to me I think Kanto was a little better. I mean I totally agree that Sinnoh had 2-3 of the best battles. But idk. Something seemed missing to me. Idk what it was. I guess I just wasn't as stoked for it. But I still liked it. I think Kanto or Sinnoh could really take the cake in my book.

The Sinnoh GF's problem is they skipped most of Dawn's matches entirely, the Ursula win was kinda cheap, the Dawn/Jessie battle was rushed into a minute.

When the most impressive battle comes from Nando Vs. Zoey, and not the main girl herself, there's a bit of a problem here.

The Ursula win wasn't cheap, if the scoreboard wasn't glitching and they had actually explained that Ursula wasn't scoring as much because she wasn't focusing on how her attacks looks or how the mad eher pokémon looked, it would actually have been in fifth my personnal top 5...

the Dawn/Jessie battle was rushed into a minute.

Jessie never should have been in the semis in the first place.

That battle topped almost every contest battles in the anime's history, including all battles in the two previous GF, and a great deal of the regular battles too. Only Dawn v Ursula in Daybreak was better in my opinion.

I am not disagreeing with you, but I can see why the Sinnoh GF wasn't quite the "epic climax to Contests" people hoped it would be.

If this truly is the last Grand Festival of the series, they should have went all out.
