I've been thinking about this for a while, but as soon as DP started the writers have been referencing a hell of a lot of characters and episodes from the past, mostly from the Kanto and AG era and a bit from Johto.

Are these nods at the older fanbase, or is this for the new generation of kids who never saw the original seasons?

You don't reallt need to know what happened in Kanto to get what's happning in Sinnoh.

So I think/hope they remembered us

I think its a combination of everything. Pokemon fans of all kind watch the series and may be reminded on past events or newcomers may need to be brought up to speed

I really doubt they're nods for the older viewers. There are much more subtle and enjoyable ways they could do that. It seems to be pretty clear that they exist to bring the main audience up to speed.

On rare occasions it's recycling of ideas, like Pika and Goliath, but not too often.

DP is especially aimed at the older viewers, given that certain episodes take the "back to basics" formula.

I think they are a bit of a nod to the older fans, but I could see them being useful to newer fans of the series as well. I do agree that there isn't a need to see some of the og episodes to understand the DP generation.

The flashbacks are like a reward for sticking to the series for so long. It's like, if you can recognize this scene from a bazillion years ago, congratulation, you are an old fart *clapclap*

But seriously, I feel great nostalgia and enjoyment for my loyalty (kinda) to the show.

Plus, if you think about it, it's nearly impossible for the "new" generation of pokemon fans to catch up completely. There are like, 600 episodes and if they're about 25 minutes each, it would take 250 hours or 10.5 days of continuous watching to catch up (I hope I did my math right XD). On the other hand, they can almost completely skip over most of johto and maybe even hoenn if they wanted to *shrugs*

Well I actually did catch up. Started at the beginning and watched every episode(right now I'm on my second time) so I don't think that it's as impossible as you make it seem.

Nearly impossible, not completely. I mean, if you take it slow, sure it wouldn't be that hard. But if you're the type to archive binge it's like torture...or masochism Dx

I had to do something similar to catch up to Naruto, but it was only like 200 episodes. But I cheated and looked up summaries/skipped some fillers. I guess you could use the same tactic for Pokemon?

Its not impossible at all. Even if you just watch 2 eps of Pokemon per day, you can get through the series rather quickly.

I rewatched almost the entire series starting from last year...and I only watched 2 eps a day...so it was only about 45 minutes of my time each night.

I agree that it's a combination of everything. The flashbacks seem to work as nostalgia for the older fans and letting the newer fans see what happened in the series they weren't able to watch.

But they're also been referencing things that happened back in Hoenn, which isn't that old just yet.

Its not as if there's a big generation gap between the Hoenn and Sinnoh era, its only about 5 years.

Combination of things for sure. Some flashbacks are needed (where'd Ash get that Thunder Stone?) and some are just shout-outs (Jessie bringing up her past with Blissey comes to mind).

Originally I thought it was for both reasons: to give us some nostalgia candy to odler fans and to tell newcomers what has happened before, but then I thought of the latest Pikachu VS Raichu episode showing some flashbacks from Pika's fight against Lt. Surge's Raichu; I read on Bulbapedia that those flashbacks were deliverately edited to leave Misty out of the scenes shown.

This made me reconsider my approach. If they wanted to give older viewers a nostalgic nod, they would have kept Misty there, but they didn't. So, my conclsuion for that episode is: the writers wanted the new audience to know that Pikachu has a grudge against Raichu because of that fight and that because of that Ash has a Thunderstone, but nothing more. Since Misy has nothing to do with that, she wasn't needed on the shots, and if they showed her, they would have to explain who she was, thus it was easier to edit her out and just keep the essential info. Which proves the flashbacks are only there to tell of earlier situations and explain some backstory, nothing more. If it was for nostalgia, then they wouldn't mind letting Misty appear again in the flashbacks.

Dude, Misty's in the current opening in Japan. So technically little kids see her before every new DP episode.

LOL, really? I wasn't aware of that. Then I must admit defeat. Thanks for correcting me (what a shame, my argument was pretty nice and good-looking IMO XD)

The flashbacks are there because the writers are getting better at what they're doing.

There's no reason *not* to have a flashback in certain episodes.

Actually, Hoenn is old sense it begin in 2003 and ended in 2006 and it had its own seasons 6-8,and Hoenn don't really count as being part of the Sinnoh era and that is because Hoenn and Sinnoh sagas are not the same series in one, but Hoenn was part of the AG era, and that is because that is were the Hoenn saga take place in the AG series, not the DP series because it have its own seasons which are different from the other three regions.

It's obvious they do that for all reasons: to remind older fans of past events, to let new viewers learn what happened before, to simply have continuity which is something they get better in with each saga
