Can I post this here or does it have to go in Misc. :(

If you don't give a shit about the olympics, why do you even make a thread about it?

Just a discussion on if the Olympics matter anymore, corruption and the impact of money.

I've been turned off by them since I first heard stories of how IOC reps got their kids free rides through college and what not just to CONSIDER a city for the olympics.

Just because it's a negative thread doesn't mean it's not a valid discussion ;)

The olympic are largely irrelevant now, even more so with all the corruption. Few sports take them very seriously. They all have their own seperate world champs, so the Olympics is reduced to a training tournament before the real deal.

Perhaps in the sports themselves, but on the public prestige level, the Olympics are still as good as it goes.

Probably because it's much easier on the medias to hype one two-weeks event every four years than to hype every little world championship here and there for every other sport.

The sports which have their highest prestige in the Olympics are not sports that do well any other time.

IE, any sport other than the major multi-millions-dollar team sports (hockey, baseball, etc).

And even then, I don't know about the United States, but up here Olympic Hockey is pretty big, perhaps due to the fact that it's much less common than the (irrelevant) World Championship or the Stanley Cup.

Also probably due to the fact that Olympic Hockey is based on the skill of your nation's people, not on the depth of your city's bank account.

The Stanley Cup is irrelevant? Do you actually KNOW any Canadians? ;)

And the NHL salary cap is much more strict and existant now. ^_^;

GO LEAFS!

I meant the World Champ as irrelevant, not the Cup. The Cup is pretty relevant, but so's Olympics Hockey (though maybe not as much in Canada).

As for the Salary cap, yeah, it's a major improvement for the NHL - makes things much more interesting for competition.

Who gives a shit?

I certainly don't.

The concept of a worldwide competition is interesting, but the bureaucracy and corruption turns me away.
