Who is Ash's strongest rival throughout the series?

I also say Paul.

Remember that Gary isn't competing in tournaments anymore since he became a researcher. So Paul competed in the Hoenn league but Gary didn't, and while Gary is still a good battler, he isn't really striving to be the best anymore.

Shigeru was just a little sweetheart who liked to tease Satoshi. :] I LOVE HIM THOUGH<3

Shinji is mean and tough. He yells at his Pokemon, and lets them go if they lose. He has way better insults to Satoshi than Shigeru did. And yeah, everything about him is meaner than Shigeru.
 
I think in terms of strength, both Shigeru and Shinji seem to be on par with each other.

However, in terms of the BEST rival for him, Shinji wins hands-down. As Kit Kat said, Shigeru was pretty much a nice guy who liked to piss Satoshi off. But Shinji is just a dick. The kind of character that you love to hate, but who's skill you still have to acknowledge.
 
If anyone, ANYONE says Richie, I'm gonna ...ugh.

Strongest rival...heh, I still have to see a Gary faceoff. Paul is getting there.

Morrison was a funny rival.
 
The most cruel would have to be Paul. Considering also Gary has most likely lost some of his touch, I would say Paul is climbing up fast. If Paul and Gary met, I would be interested to see how the two interacted.
 
I'm going to say Paul. He is an awesome rival, he is Ash polar oppisot and really knows how to make Ash ticked off.
 
Gary has gone soft. I miss his cockyness and whatever with those cheerleaders surrounding him earlier in Season 1.
 
Tyson, if he counts.

I think Paul has more experience than Gary, who's probably lost his edge for battling - granted, he beat Ash at the end of Battle Frontier, but it was also a 1-on-1 match, and Electivire definitely had an advantage over Pikachu.

Richie had Hoso's while Hoenn was airing, so he's not as old as we think. He just never appeared in a regular episode.
 
I'd agree with everyone else here, and say Paul/Shinji. He's also been to the 4 regions, and I think he's got the strongest Pokemon. I'm hoping that in the League, we get to see Turtwig/Grotle/Torterra vs. Torterra, and Pikachu vs. Electivire.
 
I used to think Richie was a MirrorAsh, cause they had the similar Pokemon and such.

yea that would be very interesting.....im sure people would pay to watch a battle between them!

i would go for Gary though, cuz Pauls just a craphead
