Who do you think started off worse May or Dawn and why? I think it was May because Dawn was more excited about being a pokemon trainer.

What being excited have to do with how good your journey started?
May was much better than Dawn at Contests since the beginning
But Dawn did much better than May in her first Contest compared to May's first Contest
It's like May got better and better with the time but Dawn is getting worse XD Wallace and May probably will make her get much better and I guess after she gets the trainings from them than it's the end of her loses and she'll win all the next Contests except maybe one... and no more performance loses

I think when May started off she hated pokemon I cant remember.

She didn't hate them
But she also didn't like them... but as time went on you could see how she began to like them more and more until eventually decided to be a Coordinator

And again how does being excited about the journey makes one better than the other?
And in addition to what I said about their Contests- of course Dawn started with much more knowledge than Ash and May (of course May wouldn't know much since she didn't like them) but it didn't help her to do better than May but actually worse

I think May is the one that should have got these loses... it makes more sense since she didn't know anything about Pokémon and Contests... unlike Dawn
But I guess only -now- they remembered the performance round isn't supposed to just be there as something the characters obviously can do without any problem and quick to the battles but actually is supposed to be a challenge for the coordinator

May couldn't win a battle to save her life when she first started. Torchic was completely useless in battle, unlike Piplup, and she couldn't do well at all. She didn't win a Contest until AG45, compared to Dawn who won hers in DP 26.

May also bombed her first Contest entirely. She barely passed the appeal round and Drew mops the floor with her Beautifly. Dawn actually did quite well in her first Contest, she passed her first appeal nicely and beat at least one trainer before she lost to Zoey.

That's why I find it mind blowing that people say that May didn't have just as rough start in the beginning as Dawn did. If anything, Dawn started off strong and then started screwing up her appeals, while May started off not knowing what she was doing and then improved as she went on.

I actually think its pretty amusing to compare them. It took May almost twice the time as Dawn to finally start winning Contests. AG45 compared to D/P26 for your first ribbon win is a big gap.

That's exactly what I tried to say- when you compare Dawn's first few Contests to May's first few - May is much better
But if to compare only the first one than Dawn did better

And outside Contests... Dawn had more knowledge about type advantages, how to battle, etc
Dawn was also lucky to get a starter that was good at battles since she got it unlike May's Torchic

So May started as worse than Dawn but soon enough learned and became much better... while Dawn seemed to start as better than May but as time went became worse

It's stupid to compare the time it took each to win her first ribbon since in DP the Contests started even before Gyms and Dawn knew from the beginning that's what she'll do
While May didn't even know about Contests and had to watch one to being like them and got her first Contest only after Ash got 2 badges already (and very soon after got the third already)
So that's why it took May longer to get a ribbon... not because she was worse than Dawn

May almost won the whole giant contest thing(i cant remember what its called)but she lost and in my opinion Dawn started off better than May and i think she has a better chance at winning.

It's the Grand Festival
As we already said - May started worse but got better soon while it seemed Dawn is better but she got worse with the time
Dawn won't win the Sinnoh GF... not on her first journey when she can't even get past the performance round
And May has a much better chance to win a GF than Dawn has currently

ur probally right she mostlikely wont win but since may lost the grand festival the writers may let dawn win it but maybe not.

I don't really think you can compare them. The competitiveness of contests have changed enough that comparing May's early contests with Dawn's contests so far isn't at all relevant.

The competitive level of Sinnoh contests is far above those in Hoenn. Also, this time around the writers are letting the girl lose in the appeals round and lose more contests overall since they have time for more of them.

I think that Dawn had the bigger advantage starting. After all, her mother was a really good coordintator and she, in my opinion, has had a better feel for battling than May did. However, May had the bigger advantage of making quality appeals early on, even though the Contests in Hoenn were a lot less competitive. But her appeals grew even better over time, especially when it came to the later Kanto Contests (excluding Harley's interference) and the Grand Festival. May had it a little harder when it came to learning Contests, but Dawn had it harder when it came to being competitive.

The writers did a great job of making the two of them opposites when it comes to Contests. May rocks at appeals while Dawn rules battles. This is one of the reasons I cannot wait for May to reappear in a few weeks.

I think that Dawn started off better, because as a daughter of an experienced co-ordinator, she starts of well. But no, she got worse and worse.

May, on the other hand, started off worse. She is AFRAID of pokemon, but then later, she gets better. I hope she'll help Dawn when she comes back.

Speaking strictly in terms of the way that fans recieved her, May definitely had a worse start than Dawn, mostly thanks to everyone who hated her simply because she ''replaced'' Misty.

Okay, after thinking about it a bit more I've come to this conclusion.

Dawn started off better at the very start because she at least had some idea of what to do. Where as May didn't have the slightest clue to an almost absurd degree.

May was terrible at first then got very good very quickly in a completely unrealistic manner. Dawn although she had some idea of what to do is still learning and occasionally messing things up.

I was most irritated about May not liking Pokemon. She could have found another excuse to go travelling - not sure what, but still, you're giving an uninterested kid the responsibility of looking after a little animal. But her getting the Mudkip to water gun her in the face was amusing. She tried. It just didn't work quite right.

I was most irritated about May not liking Pokemon.

That lasted a grand total of one episode.

It was also a refreshing change of pace from all the trainers who jump out of bed to get their first Pokemon when they're 10, such as the way Ash and Dawn started.

May's start was fairly unique I thought, having no interest in Pokemon and no goal in mind until she got familiar with the concepts through seeing them herself.
