Personally I think it's one of the worst ideas the Pokemon Company have ever come up with. Who cares about the inconsistency of Johto Marills not producing Azurills? The same could be said for Pokemon learning new attacks in other regions, but they didn't introduce an item you need to give to Pikachu in order for it to learn Light Screen. It also means that huge Pokemon like Snorlax can be obtained at Level 1, which is completely illogical.

Well I think it's a good idea. It's just an item which has fixed one or two inconsistencies, and their good for boosting the power of certain Pokémon.

Also it's not "The Pokémon Company" that make the games, it Game Freak.

...they're necessary to have in order to obtain certain Pokemon through breeding. I don't find them particularly useful as held items strategy-wise, but I certainly wouldn't say they're pointless.

^Only the Wave, Odd, Rock and Rose Incenses increase power, and thats just Water Psychic, Rock and Grass. One of them reduces accuracy and another has the same effect as lagging tail. Another lowers the wild encounter rate and the final increases Water type moves, but to a lesser degree.

I know, I know. I didn't say every Incense raised a Pokémons attack.

We have a quote button... no need to use "^".

I, personally, find the incense useful. I like having the option to have the baby forms of those Pokemon. Unlike the others introduced in Gen II where I am forced to have the babies.

Never had any problem with the incenses at all, as they at least added more depth to the gameplay, and in fact, I really disliked the removal of them in Scarlet/Violet.

They do feel kind of pointless. They mainly exist to facilitate breeding of baby Pokemon (and they've taken to retconning breeding now, so they're not needed for that purpose), and the battle effects they have are redundant to other items (we already numerous items for type boosting, we have Amulet Coin for doubling prize money, we have the Cleanse Tag for keeping away wild Pokemon, etc.). No real reason to keep them around. Doubly so for the type boosting items because we already have a zillion items that do that anyway (the traditional type boosting held items like Miracle Seed, Charcoal, Mystic Water, etc., the Arceus plates, the type gems).

back when i cared about competitive, i liked the incense system because it means you don't have to deal with baby pokemon when breeding strong mons. Those days are long in the past though. Nowadays i appreciate not having to look for an item when working on my dex.

I am curious though, how someone stumbled upon this 14-year-old thread. Not that there's anything wrong with reviving a thread like this.

Never liked any of them tbh because most are redundant outside of breeding since their other effects already exist through different items. Although I admit I'm a bit biased because when I first played Sapphire I threw away the Sea Incense not knowing that it was needed to produce Azurill eggs. :slowpoke:

I have no opinion on them per se, but I do think their removal and the resulting breeding changes had made certain species more tedious chain-breeding wise (as literal infants the base stages of the incense mons aren't and shouldn't be fertile, so you need to evolve them first).

Granted I also think it is in GF's best interest to try to wean players away from the eugenics thing if it makes prepping teams more tedious (thought it would help if they made caps and mints more common), so I can't really begrudge them for that.
