It seems like a lot of fans think Riley is an expy, or lookalike, of Aaron. But wouldn't it be the other way around?

Lucario was in the movie Aaron was also in. Being that Lucario was already made we can assume Riley was finished or near-finished and they based Aaron on him.

But, also, they usually create the Pokemon first.

I always thought that Riley was based on Aaron, personally. The movie came first, and they like implementing movie things into the games. Then again, they could have told the anime producers about Riley and Lucario...

Since they're both in the anime, but only Riley is in the games, I'm moving this to the Anime section.

Well...One can never be completely sure...maybe They designed both characters at the same time...

But at last chronologically,Aaron came first xD

I Being that Lucario was already made we can assume Riley was finished or near-finished and they based Aaron on him.

Walk me through your logic here, because Lucario being made doesn't mean that the in-game trainer who owns him is.

If I recall, there was still quite a bit of time between that movie and the release of D/P. Whether they had an idea of how the in game event would go or not, they certainly can make a lot of changes between the time Lucario was debut and the game's release.

The creation of Lucario has nothing to do with the creation of its trainers.

Well, the development of the Diamond and Pearl games started in late 2004, or possibly earlier. Lucario as a pokemon has been released in the fandom in early 2005, and the movie started development in 2004.
Either the anime character Aaron was based off the game character Riley's events in the game, who has the Lucario. Or, Riley is based off Sir Aaron in the Lucario movie. Since there have been numerous other movie references in that game (such as team rosters being based off movie characters), most likely Sir Aaron was established first and Riley was based off the character, as homage.

I'm gonna have to agree that Aaron came first. Just because Lucario was designed from early on doesn't mean that every trainer with one was.

They could have at least started Riley, or had his beta design, around that time. He is one of the only trainers with a Lucario.

I can't really see Riley being based off Aaron.

Well, they've been developing the games long before they're realeased and maybe they just suggested the design to the anime. To get the öh, its that guy with that Lucario" vibe and all.

Now that I think of it, I think that Sir Aaron was created first.

My reasoning being that Riley and his Lucario was a way to show that Sir Aaron and Past Lucario had been able to get their happy ending. They were able to meet again in the next life/through reincarnation.

From Bulbapedia, Lucario and the Mystery of Mew was in production before Destiny Deoxys had even finished. As Destiny Deoxys premiered in 2004 in Japan and Diamond and Pearl being released in 2006, this would have given the game and anime crew ample time to create, storyboard and communicate between each other. I'm sure that they plan things out thoroughly.
