why are fruit names so taboo?

In the dub, nearly every single time any type of fruit appears, whether it be watermelons, bananas, or whatever, it is always referred to generically as "fruit", never its proper name. Seems really awkward to me, since nobody does that in real life. And it's just plain stupid. I can't think of any reasonable explanation.

Any ideas? Or better yet, any rants? :p

Do you mean Berries? I believe they've referred to game-designated berries by their official names plenty of times.

Or do you mean the real kind? Back in the Bullet Seed episode in Hoenn, they referenced the fruit there as watermelons (which wasn't a Watamel berry either, as indicated by the original Japanese eppy). Also in one of the specials when the gang hangs out on floating watermelons, they're named accordingly.

Or perhaps Tropius' mystery fruit? Those things definitely seem to be bananas, but given the notion that it's a fruit which grows off of a Pokemon, is edible, and has the strange ability to regrow rapidly (and only 3 of them), I'd say there's some leeway there.

Any recent fruit stuffs in Sinnoh?

The closest I can think of is Nando :\

Apparently small children in tropical places eat the fruit off wild Tropius. Mmm... Now I want bananas. :lick:

Well in the unofficial DP contest when Jessie used Ash's Aipom against Dawn's Pachirisu, the prize was a bunch of bananas but I believe they called them fruit instead.

Could it be because fruit is one syllable and bananas is 3?

That's most likely it. Having done only a bit of voice acting (Ouran), I've been told that they shorten things for the mouthflaps on the show. So... perhaps depending on the dialogue, 'banana' (even though it's the same in Japanese) would be shortened to 'fruit' if what the character has to say is longer than in the original Japanese dub.

I mean... you have the other Japanese names for the other fruits, too....

Suika (3 syllables) as opposed to watermelon (4 syllables)

You look at it that way, it makes sense that the would rather shorten it down to just 'fruit' instead of finding a way to call it by it's proper name.

>O Really?!

But yeah, I thought it was really stupid :p I'm remembering Jessie's bananas especially. Even my sister thought that was dumb!

Remember the good old days when we had Tomato Berries?(Tomatoes, obviously)

And Razz Berries?(Razzberries)

And Pinap Berries?(Pinapple)

XD Yup

I agree, though .-. I mean... I think I only ever recall one time where 'apple' was actually said in the series.... Maybe twice... .-.

:unworthy:

Maddie Blaustein, and Brock's Voice Actor supposedly came on Serebii Forums. I'm not quite sure if it was conclusive that's who they were (since I never really paid attention), but there was a whole ask Maddie thread in the general Pokemon discussion forum.

But it is nice when celebrities enjoy the same things as you.

Oh, I read that Maddie thread right through (bless her soul) and it was NewBrock, right? But VA's of the show discussing the show is different than discussing the show with someone who is a VA. Somehow :p

Aipom and Bananas when jessies used it in contest and won the bananas which aipom wanted. Which episode was that anyway?

I'm thinking of another minor mention when someone (Dawn I think) said "your favorite fruit!" to a Pokemon instead of saying the fruit's name...but I can't remember any specifics.

Oh God  I know animals are (sensibly perhaps) tabooed, but just because there are plant types/specific in game fruits, doesn't mean you can't acknowledge a banana as a banana! A fruit is a fruit for goodness sake!
