Why are the writers making such a big deal out of Marina all of a sudden?

In the newest episode about the maid cafe, Marina gets another "cameo" of sorts by appearing on a shirt that a guy wears. This makes a total of three times that Marina appeared in D/P now. Why do you think the writers are doing this?

My only idea is that Marina was meant to be a videogame heroine for G/S like May and Dawn were for their respective gens, but Marina got screwed out of appearing as a regular in the show due to not showing up until Crystal version.

Is this the writers way of "reminding" us of Marina, the "forgotten" videogame heroine? And given that she's now a coordinator, do you believe we'll be seeing her and Dawn face off later on in Sinnoh?

I am still being hopeful it's because of a G/S/C remake. Hopeful.

They're most likely foreshadowing her appearance in the show, but as Scott said, it's most likely due to the fact that she was introduced after Johto started. Also makes me wonder if we're going to see Jimmy and Vincent again (and maybe the introduction of the GSC rival in the anime) but IMO that's wishful thinking. Also makes me wonder that if Marina was in the show like May and Dawn, if AshxMarina shippers would appear.

Johto remake that's for sure!! It must be more of those double-entendres!

It's likely to do with a possible Johto remake, but I actually keep thinking of Soledad.

Soledad appeared at the end of Battle Frontier in the Kanto Grand Festival. She's a brilliant Co-ordinator, and is a Contest Champion. What's more, since May was being written out of the show it provided her with a perfect reason to go to Johto; follow the competition. In Kanto she finally managed to beat Drew, but Soledad showed her that there is always another, even stronger rival for you to have. It let May be worked out of the show without any regrets on the behalf of the character, and worked better than the "I have no choice" excuse they gave Misty.

Marina is also a fantastic Co-ordinator, and I believe that it was said in one episode that she's a Contest Champion. At the current pacing of D/P it will end up being a similar length as both the Original Series and Advanced Generation. I can easily see Marina acting as the Soledad of Diamond and Pearl, defeating Dawn in the Grand Festival and moving on to a different region with Dawn in tow as a way to end her role in the show.

The only real difference is that this time, what the writers are doing is introducing Marina to us gradually, so that we know about her already when she eventually appears in the Grand Festival. Soledad's appearance was very abrupt, and every time I watch the Kanto GF I get the vibe that she was just introduced last minute as a reason for May to leave the show. With Marina, the writers are avoiding that by bringing her in gradually. Again, it's just a case of learning from past mistakes.

Besides that, Marina is already somewhat familiar to us because of The Legend of Thunder, and her appearance in that was really a precedent for the introduction of Contests. Marina is the perfect candidate as a late rival because her fan base will strengthen, it will advertise the GS remakes if they happen, and her character is already established a fantastic Co-ordinator.

And it also opens up the door for an Ash vs. Jimmy and/or Ash vs. Jackson match in the Sinnoh League.

My guess would be another reference to the GSC games (which may or may not mean a GSC remake is in the works)

DP is filled with references to the past games, especially GSC. Not because the game designers are planning on making a GSC remake, but because they are throwbacks to what fans remember and they are merely tidbits references with no hidden meaning to them.

But doesn't it seem odd that they're showing Marina so much now? I don't think we saw her at all over the entire duration of AG.

And now all of a sudden in Sinnoh we're seeing the G/S heroine make three cameos over the course of D/P? And not to mention sticking her into the coordinator role has to obviously been done for a reason.

One of the writers must really like her. I believe said writer is also disappointed they couldn't do much with her back when Johto was originally airing, so maybe they're making up with it now. I think its only a matter of time before we see her in person and she gets a speaking role.

Maybe she'll be a rival character in a grand festival?

What's also interesting is the apparent lack of May being mentioned. Which I believe is going to be a complete surprise appearence in a/the Grand Festival as well.

This will probably cause many fan's heads to explode in amazement of all the fanservice. (Not all fanservice is sexual, as long as it's appealing for the fans, it's fanservice)

I think they're just inserting little things like that for the fans since they know fans will know these charcters/things and will be happy to see them
Just like Wobbuffet wearing its clothes from the Claydol episode... we aren't likely to see this Claydol again because of that
And that guy had May's bandana too just green... and that doesn't hint at anything
I also think Dogasu said TR wore in episode 10 the clothes from movie 6
But hopefully I'm wrong and Marina will appear

My question has to be Does anyone actually *like* Marina? I found her shrill and obnoxious, and that's in Japanese. Does she have a hidden fan base I just don't know about?

I personaly don't care about her. I found her obnoxious also, but I would defenitly want a G/S/C remake. I love Johto <3

I've never actually seen the legend of thunder episodes so I have no idea what her character is really like, but I do like her character design alot. (love the blue hair)

I also like the fact that she has a Misdreavus and a Jigglypuff.

Anyway, she was a pre-cursor to coordinators in a sense, so the field fitted her like a glove.

I wonder when we'll see May show up in advertisements and merchandise like that?

Does DP mention something about when in the timelin they take place. GSC took place 3(?) years after the originals, and RSE took place at the same time as the originals did, so maybe DP takes place at the same time as GSC?

...I should play those games, you know. :p

There's no clear references to an actual timeline, but it does mention sorta takes place after the incident in the Lake of Rage and the Red Gyarados

Actually at the very beginning of the game you're treated with a newsflash about it.

There's also an NPC who gives you an egg and mentions that Prof.Elm made the discovery on Pokémon eggs.

There's also the secretpotion that's made in Cianwood City.

and an NPC talks about Mt.Moon, the Tin Tower, the Whirl Islands and the Mossdeep Space Center.

I know, it is my most favorite, of all regions. Loved the music too.

If its not foreshadowing, maybe its just a shout out; Shes like a celebrity in d/p and a sort of running gag (kinda) is to have references to her everywhere. I like It :D it adds a little fun in the background (like that panda man in one piece) and is also fan pleasing.

That or its foreshadowing as people have said :)

It makes me wonder how much of Marina's personality will be "tweaked" if she does show up in person.

She was technically the first girly character on the show, and with her May and Dawn, on top of the fact that they're all coordinators, they all seem too similar to each other.

Wasn't Marina also a Lance fangirl in the Raikou special? It makes me wonder if we'll see Lance again with the way Marina idolizes him.
