did you notice how alot of pokemon are opposites? like salamence and flygon, zangoose and seviper, and machamp and alakazam. even though you may not notice it, there are alot of opposites. I wonder why?

The games were created with a sense around rivalry, that's one of the reasons why there is always two versions.

Most "version exclusives" can be considered opposites. It's because, like Bell said, the games are all about rivalry.

Also, Duality or "opposing pairs" is the first and most basic way to organize something, and it's one that springs to our minds most often as it's a prevalent strain in most cultures. Good/Evil, Male/Female, East/West, Winners/Losers, Fans/Muggles, Microsoft/Apple...it's a quick and easy "rule of thumb" to classify things on the fly.

The original post in this thread, when stripped of its elaboration, basically asks why there are so many Pokémon that are not like other Pokémon. Wow..... just..... wow.

Salamence and Flygon aren't really a pair, considering all the disparities between their lines. But I always did think that their names got switched; Bagon->Shelgon->Flygon always made more sense to me than Bagon->Shelgon->Salamence.

yes, bagon and salamence are a pair, although I dont remember where I got that from. and, wow, who knew that there were so many philosiphers on this forum. the last one I was invovled in, everyone cussed me out.

and dont take anything I just said the wrong way, I'm just sating that everyone here is alot smarter than on other forums.

We try not to scare away newcomers. It's bad for... well, we're not really a "business," but you get the idea.

Anyway, what makes you say Flygon (or is it Bagon? Now I'm confused) and Salamence are a pair? Salamence is a "pseudo-legendary," and is thus comparable with Dragonite, Tyranitar, Metagross and Garchomp. Flygon, I don't think there's anything I'd really "match" with it.

Of course, if you mean Bagon, then they're related because one evolves into the other.

Um, I'm certain Flygon and Salamence aren't opposites. It's usually base stats that show one Pokemon is a counterpart of another such as Magmar and Elektabuzz, or whether they are counterparting version exclusives such as Vulpix and Growlithe.

Salamence and Flygon really don't share much in common besides being 3rd gen dragons :\

Except part of Salamence's name apparently comes from salamander, something Flygon is not.

Salamence and Flygon probably were decided to not be rivals in a later stage of development because the stats are clearly different, but design-wise, I can kind of see it: Both Stage 2 Dragons, flying and ground type opposites, green and blue opposites. But I'm not sure if you can judge by design for any confirmations, unless you get a confirmation from the designers though.

Flygon and Salamence aren't rivals they just give trainers a choice on what Dragon types they want you can choose between the two Flygon evolving from a Vibrava at lv 45 or Salamence evolving from a Shelgon at lv 50 it's not like Kanto when your only option is getting a Dratini/Dragonair and then waiting a long time for it to evolve at lv 55 or Sinnoh when your only Dragon type is Bible which you have to evolve into Gabite and then evolve Gabite into Garchomp but even so they are all good Dragon types even Garchomp despite not being able to fly

Pairs keep everything in balance. Up & down, hot & cold, bugs and trucks ect. :p

As for Salamence and Flygon, I don't really see them as rivals. To me, they're both just dragon types that appeared in Hoenn.

Flygon and Salamance aren't opposites, their stats aren't even the same and as someone else stated Salamance is a "pseoudo-Legendary" Flygon isn't which is another reason why they're not opposite.

Now for your original question on why there's so many opposites as a lot of other people stated, it's for rivalry between games and Pokémon since the game practically revolves around that.

Yeah Pokemon has competition like Digimon and Bakugan though Bakugan isn't really a videogame but it is popular to our younger community :p

Well, there are certain Pokemon out there that are opposites without having to do anything with the other, like Sandshrew and Ekans, with evolutions. You can't catch both in any game.

I guess it was just in that Jirachi movie that I never saw. I just saw a preview with salmence chasing flygon and I thought they were rivals. hm, guess not.
