Why continue to stick with Ash?

While I've been separated from the anime since the first half of the Hoenn story, can someone explain why the story is STILL about Ash? I doubt this is a common complaint, but I've just failed to connect with Ash as a character ever since. I'd just like to see somebody new. When they did the Legend of Thunder!, it was pretty cool to see a new person, if only briefly.

I get Ash is popular, but I could only wonder how the series would be if each new region took the perspective of a native character, like Ethan for Johto or Lucas for Sinnoh. Maybe it's just me though.

My guess is because he's connected to Pikachu, and they didn't want to drop the mascot.

But you're right, if this was any other series Ash would have been dropped a long time ago.
