Why did Archeops get its ability?

This just bugs me completely. What is normally an awesome fossil Poke is nearly ruined by a hindering ability. What really annoys me though is I don't even get why it's there. Why would Nintendo add this? If anyone has any thoughts or theories, feel free to post.

Well, they added it to negate its high stats I guess...but in terms of flavor, I'm not sure why they went that route for the Archaeopteryx Pokemon. Like, there's nothing really that makes sense for it to be the family's signature, unique ability.

I'm guessing because of having base 140 Attack, 112 Special Attack and 110 Speed. Give it a Choice Band, Choice Scarf or Choice Specs and it would be a very deadly Pokemon. Without the ability you'd be able to sit in there most matches just spamming a CB Head Smash.

Personally this would have been the most badass Rock type if they didn't fuck with it like that.

This is precisely it. They did the same thing with Slaking and Regigigas. They're just balancing out the strengths and weaknesses of the pokemon.

they kinda overdid it with Regigigas, though. Honestly, it's a legendary to begin with (and not a very easily obtained one either, requiring the transfer of three legendaries from the GBA games, or in Platinum, having another Regigigas that you already got from a promotion), but as if that's not enough, they felt it should be screwed over for FIVE turns at the beginning of every match/whenever it's switched out and not even be allowed to learn Rest or Protect. Seriously GameFreak, overkill much? -_-

At least with that thing, double battles are its friend, getting rid of Truant isn't nearly as easy.

Archeops gets off the easiest.

Couldn't have said it better myself. Pokémon like Slaking and Archeops would turn everything into a puddle of pink goo if left unchecked. Eveything good needs to have a sufficient counterbalance. This doesn't just go for Pokémon; a good partion of all game design works on this principle.

Not sure why the ability would be so much of a bad thing for Archeops: Just kill all the Bullet Punch Scizors priority users your opponent may have and you're free to sweep everything the opponent has.

Yep. As for a "flavor" reason, probably because he looks like a monster chicken and a chicken is a chicken. Archeopteryx are cool though. And at leas his ability doesn't hinder him right away like Regigigas' does. He is a good revenge killer at least.

I don't know, what a terrible ability for a fossil pokemon to have, I rather stick with Aerodactyl.

I can still OHKO it with a swords punch scizor, but realistically, I swept the entire elite 4 with a slightly under leveled archeops. Without defeatist, iy would be an uber.

The Defeatist ability was inserted primarily to balance out its powerful stats (attack and special attack). It is quite similar to Regigigas's Slow Start (having Attack and Speed for the first five turns in battle) in this regard.

The real question is: Why are Archen and Arcehops's base sets high enough that this ability had to be inserted? Archen alone has higher attack than most of the fully evolved pokemon in this generation, for example.

Perhaps Archeops was given an edge to compete with its "older" Gen I counterpart, Aerodactyl? Both pokemon have very high attack and speed, yet suffer from horrible defenses and a group of common weaknesses. The difference between Aerodactyl and Archeops is that Aerodactyl simply is faster and has slightly higher defenses.

Both Archeops (and Aerodactyl) have low defensive stats.

My guess is that since most Unova pokemon are another take on an already present idea in the Pokemon canon (Audino is like Chansey, Alomomola is similar to Luvdisc, Etc) Archeops and Carracosta are basically using the same Idea behind Rampardos and Bastiodon. One is a sheild and focuses on Defense (Bastiodon, Carracosta) the other is a Sword and focuses on Attack (Rampardos, Archeops). The only exception is they gave Carracosta some attacking power and made Archeops so powerful that it needed an ability made to hinder it. That's my guess at least.

well just throw a Simple Beam at them and you're all good. Though honestly its ability was what drove me to Carracosta in the first place. Interesting that they just didn't lower its stats instead of going through the trouble of making an all new ability exclusive to itself.

Because it's extremely strong. Especially with Acrobatics. If it's not holding something, that's a move with 110 power without the added STAB. Then add the massive attack stat onto that and you have a killer. It also has a quite high special attack stat, and decent speed.

That kind of kills its usability, of course, Flying Gem getting used up actually allows for a boosted full power Acrobatics.

It's not like they're discovering Pokémon with their stats intact, and having to nerf them. The real question is "Why did they make it so they had to nerf it so bad?" It's just weird.
