Why did it take 10 years for Ash's friends to get an electric type?

For the first 9 years of the show, it was generally assumed that the reason both Ash and his friends never caught an electric type Pokemon is because it'd conflict with Pikachu.

Why did it take the writers 10 years to finally disprove that by giving Dawn Pachirisu? As we can see with Pachi, it doesn't conflict with Pikachu at all and she doesn't even overuse it at all.

So why were electric types "off-limits" from the beginning of Kanto till the end of Battle Frontier previously? It seemed stupid back then, since there were several good electric Pokemon that could have been part of the cast back in Kanto, Johto and Hoenn and the writers passed over them.

What does it matter? Do you honestly think any of this was on their mind?

Maybe because Tracey started as a bug trainer who was used to advertise the original mascot to Johto (Marill). Misty was a water type trainer. Brock, although with the occassional exception, was still about defensive Pokemon. And the electric types in Hoenn SUCKED.

But honestly, this thread is useless.

Brock could have captured an Electrike in Hoenn, it seems his type.

Chinchou/Lanturn are half water/electric, which would have been perfect for Misty.

What about Elekid/Electabuzz who was so popular back then, hence why Paul uses it now as his main Pokemon?

How is an Electrike Brock's type? Because he knew how to take care of one in the Electrike episode?

Brock's Pokemon:
Geodude, Onix, Forretress, Happinni, Marshtomp, Sudowoodo, Vulpix, and Crobat.

Am I forgetting any? Of those, 6/8 were defensive Pokemon (Marshtomp is mixed, but has excellent defenses). The only two that weren't was a Zubat that was caught early Kanto in Mt. Moon near his home, and Vulpix whom Suzy gave him. So both were "special circumstances". He'd have sooner gotten that Stantler before he had Electrike.

Misty back then, apart from maybe Oddish and Togepi (who we agree was a deadweight), generally had a thing for strict water types. That's why she was so concerned about Pokemon like Marill and and Corsola, both of which the story stayed true to. So why would she go after a Chinchou?

Elekid indeed was a star. But I don't think it's a coincidence that both Ash's rivals ended up with it. I think it was supposed to be a mischievious Pokemon, as every time we've ever seen someone from it's evo line in the show it's always a prick (save Gary's Electivire). Additionally, I would have to ask again, what would be the purpose of either of them getting one?

And again, Hoenn's electric types were pretty crappy. Electrike was in fact the only decent one.

I still don't see why he couldn't have raised an Electrike well, the guy who owned one in DP was also a breeder, so this kind of Pokemon could have fit Brock easily.

BTW aside from Plusle/Minun, what other electric types in Hoenn wouldn't have been good for the cast? I don't see the problem.

Pachirisu's incredibly adorable. I have to say, if any Pokemon were to debut as a companion's electric type, I'm glad that was it.

I don't remember, but does anyone know if Pachirisu's voice in the dub was kept the same as from the raw? If not, PUSA did an excellent job to it, because that increased it's adorable count like 10x.

well, to be fair, she did at least try to capture a Chinchou in the Chinchou episode in Johto, so it's not like she didn't try to capture a water pokemon that is also an electric type.

Elekid's are usually mischevious, and are often played up to be probably the antithesis of Pikachu, hence why some of Ash's rivals own Elekid or an Electabuzz. Though, at least with Dr. Namba's Electabuzz, it only acted like a jerk due to the fact that it's mind was being tampered with. After both Pikachu's defeated it [that is, broke the connection], it acted as though it didn't know what happened the past few hours.

As for the Hoenn electric types, the only other Electric type of Gen III was Manectric, and it's probably unlikely that Ash would capture it, May... I don't think that she would have interest in it. Brock might have an interest in it, but it's unknown if he'll actually capture one. As for Max, definitely not. Plusle and Minun can't function by themselves, and are best suited for double battling. Since May and Ash definitely won't do that (last time they did, it was in "The Bicker the Better", which didn't go over too well.), and Max can't even own pokemon, and, tell me, what was the last time Ash and Brock Double-battled? The only ones who MIGHT have a chance at Plusle and Minun are JJM.

@Trainer'sInsomnia: Technically, Corsola wasn't really a "strict" water type (It's typing is Water/Rock). And technically, she doesn't really concern herself to strict water types either. Staryu (Which is her favorite pokemon, as she said herself) was more or less a land battler.

Good post actually. I figured Corsola was mixed but wasn't sure. I actually just used it as an example that Misty was already looking for a few water Pokemon that she wanted. But apparently she tried to catch Chinchou as well, so yeah. She tried.

Anyway, I still don't see why an Electrike would be fitting for Brock just because some random breeder had one. Brock knew how to take care of it because he's a great breeder, but that's not to say it's the perfect type for him. Again, he's primarily stuck to defensive types. With the occassional exception like Croagunk during this series.

The writers and producers found their brains at the star of Diamond and Pearl. That's all you have to understand.

I really don't believe that the writers had a stigma against other characters to get electric types. It's just that Pachirisu (which is a hyperactive hyperly adorable squirrel) offered itself up as the perfect kind of Pokemon that Hikari should own.

Better question: who cares?

I care, which is why I posted the thread, obviously. If you don't about the subject, don't bother posting here.

There are a number of previous electric types I would have loved to see on the group, and its a shame most of them were passed over back then.

Because replying to a thread with "This thread sucks" accomplishes so much.

In any case, considering the piss poor way Pokémon under Misty's and Brock's Pokémon have been treated in the original series and to a lesser extent AG (with a few exceptions) maybe it's best not to let cool Pokémon like Lanturn and Electrike not be caught by them. XD I'd love for an Electrike to join the twerps sometime. So adorable.

Hey, be careful with the "original series statement" =O, they were treated pretty well in Kanto, I think.

Goldeen, Staryu, Starmie, Horsea, Onix, Geodude, Zubat, and Vulpix were treated anything but well in Kanto. XP
They all got screen time, and used. Even Goldeen, which had no business coming out of it's Pokeball, ever. =[

That was back when the sidekicks actually used to tag team with Ash against team rocket (of course this is back again in DP), and then there were instances like the tournament for Togepi, the princess doll bit, the grand prix, and some other things here and there.

It wasn't bad, considering there aaaaare 8 of them split between 2 sidekick characters, over the course of only about 75 episodes, in a plot that actually had very little filler back then. I mean you've got to figure, most episodes of Pokemon back then were 1. Gym battles 2. Capture episodes 3. Release episodes. With very few filler in between to explore with stuff. They were treated relatively well under the circumstances. =D

The write must be realizing that Pikachu is getting bland. So they spiced up the show with Pachirisu! Unfortunately it didn't work.
