I mean really three years have past shouldent they have gotte stonger?

Dont get me wrong G/S/C is the best but why did they go down o_O

I suspect it's a balance issue and they decided to change the levels in order to adjust the difficulty, often balance and game play override lore and logic.

I agree, the elite four and champion were made to be less difficult in G/S/C than in R/B/Y because there are more things to explore latter in the 2nd gen games (the Kanto area, three years later)...
The fact is that while the champion was the ultimate battle in RBY, it isn't the ultimate battle in GSC... so, you arent expected to have very stong pokemon in that part of the game in GSC

Yup, I've always tought that was the reason. And remember Red in Mt.Silver.
Besides, if you compare GSC with any other generation you'll realise everything is weaker in GSC. (Gym leaders, trainers in certain areas eTc.)

This is one of my big problems with the third and fourth generation. There is more to do and explore than in GSC, and yet so much focus is put on beating the ridiculously strong Elite Four.

GSC had the right idea. And since raising and breeding Pokemon so meticulously has become such an integral part of the newer games, I'm surprised the trend didn't continue.

I personally think it's an excellent situation when the Elite Four and the Champion are so tough, they are the best of the best so in my opinion they should be extremely challenging.
Although I was able to sweep almost the whole Hoenn E4 in Emerald with an extremely low level Gardevoir by using Hypnosis then Calm Minding up and following it all up by Psychic spam.
In most cases the Elite Four is the final part of the story and the climax of your journey so it should be tough and difficult.

The reason it was different in G/S/C has been stated above, because to was not the end of your journey and the real climax or final was the battle with Red. One of the reasons I am looking forward to Platinum is the fact that the Elite Four members have well designed teams and are so resilient and hard hitting in D/P and it looks as if that trend will be continued in the third installment. That is why I didn't like the E4 in G/S/C they didn't feel like they deserved their positions and the whole process was anticlimatic and boring because of that.

Yes, the relative weakness of the G/S/C trainers is my biggest, if only beef with those games.
