This is where you can make fun of unowns all you want so enjoy
(I messed up on the other why unowns exist) :secret:

Well, the dictionary definition of 'legendary' is remarkable; extraordinary; of, based on, or presented in legends. We know they existed in the Pokémon World because of the cave hieroglyphics that Sebastian was examining in the 3rd movie. We also know that they can remake reality at a fundamental level. I think they fit the description.

Sebastian? I think you mean Spencer. If it was Sebastian, that would be *really* interesting.

And yes, but "legendary" has also come to mean certain pokemon--the birds, the dogs, the mews, etc. You know what I mean.

Sorry, my 3rd movie knowledge is a bit off. But if that definition applies to the Celebi, Mews, dogs, birds, and Unown, then why is it also applied to Arcanine?

At one point in the film, it's mentioned that the Unown--for some reason--are having trouble controlling their own psychic energies. I don't remember all the details. What I'm wondering is if their power is greater than, say, Celebi or the dogs or birds. Although time travel and being able to resurrect one of your own kind is pretty awesome in terms of abilities. If we ranked the legendaries according to their given powers, what would the list look like?

Legendary would generally mean unique (or at least i'd expect it to). The Unown are hardly unique - in terms of numbers.

My best guess at the reason the Unown exist is that somehow the strange glyphs written into the walls (as seen in Movie 3 and the Ruins of Alph) which we now associate as the Roman Alphabet were given life through some mysterious incident/accident and the incident that brought them to life also gave them their uber-powers.

Really, it's hard to come up with any other logical origin for what essentially are psychic floating letters of insanity....

They can sing pretty well though. I'll give them that.

Extraordinary or presented in legend? That would qualify just about every pokemon in existence in our eyes. In the pokemon world, though, I will admit they have been presented as having fantastic abilities, even by pokemon standards. It was even shown in one ep that they come from their own universe. This would certainly qualify as legendary, but like Arcanine, no story has ever really been written about them, and they have been more greatly stressed as being mysterious more than legendary. Arcanine, on the other hand, has been presented as a mere ordinary pokemon. The only thing that makes it legendary is the Chinese legend it's based on. I think the difference here lies in that the Unown have no control of some natural force that affects a lot of lives. I would also like to add that Mewtwo and Deoxys are only legendary because they're so powerful. Then again, what I said about Arcanine would make a handful of other otherwise ordinary pokemon legendaries as well.

Ack, I can't figure it out. I guess it's more of a question whether they are accepted as a legendary or not. I personally don't accept it as a legendary.

Arcanine is classified as 'The Legendary Pokemon'.

Mew, Mewtwo etc ARE Legendary Pokemon.

C'est une difference.

I thought it was heavily implied that they were actually extradimensional beings of pure psychic energy who only take on the form of roman characters in a misguided attempt to communicate with humans.

That is a really interesting explanation. The strange thing would be, why would they take the form of Roman letters if they were essentially in a world where they didn't exist? I figure that the main language would be Japanese in "Pokemon World", because of the signs and such, but now it seems that no real language is farther ahead. Do you think the only real reason they chose Roman letters was marketability? (That would actually kinda depress me...) Maybe we'll see hiragana and katakana Unowns in future games.

As for Arcanine being a legendary Pokemon, I don't think it's "legendary" in the same respect as the birds and whatnot. I always think back to the second anime ep, with the four panel of Articuno, Zapdos, Moltres, and Arcanine. I seriously think they didn't have another Legendary yet, so they just threw in a majestic, kind of rare Pokemon.

Perhaps because the Roman alphabet was not as complex as the kana to form into Unown. And face facts: Roman alphabet are as marketable to the Japanese as kana and kanji are to you - it has an exotic, foreign flavour.
