Why does Brock always have his eyes shut?!

I heard that in Japan, they do that if you like someone or something like that. Or he is just a male Crystal Kay.

They're open, he's just squinty-eyed. ^^; You can often see them sparkle, like when he goes into Shoujo Takeshi mode to flirt in DP. xD

He just has small eyes, that's all.

Stereotypical Asian, I guess. Tanned skin, small eyes, perverted, smart, excellent cook, etc.

And if Pokémon was for older audiences, I'm sure he'd know kung-fu too.

Maybe he does know kung fu. It's just never been relevant to the plot so they've never brought it up.

Seriously, that's a good question. Other than "because that's how they wanted him to look," I can't think of any reasons they would have for it. Maybe someone with a better understanding of Japanese culture would have some useful insight.

His eyes aren't "always shut." They're just a lot smaller than everyone else's.

There really isn't any more to it than that.

This. If anyone wants to talk about eyes, why not talk about Cattleya? Takeshi's eyes may be tiny, but at least he still looks human. That girl looks like a freaking alien.

Hey, there are smaller and bigger eye sizes even among Asians.

The Pokemon anime's art is VERY stylized. The slits are just a way to further drive home the point that he's got very small eyes.

I see many people with the same kind of eyes in Detective Conan. Ichimaru Gin from Bleach is also a good example, if you're looking for something more recent (DC's on-going, but sadly doesn't enjoy a huge English-speaking fanbase. Pity.). He only opens his eyes wide, what, twice in canon and once for an ending song animation?

hmm... then I'll have to go back to the time when they were in the Battle Frontier

He is squinting... because we really do see his eyes sparkling...

And he's better this way... when they are open... phew, the killing intent of a Sharingan user is nothing compared to them...
