Why don't people like Rhyperior?

Re: Why don't people like Ryperior?

What do you mean? Rhyperior is actually a really nice Pokemon. Competitively, it can serve as a rather decent check to Darmanitan (provided that it's switching into Flare Blitz and not Superpower (though it can live that as well, thanks to Solid Rock). I personally think Rhyperior is a rather interesting Pokemon with a bit of a niche, especially because of its rather blessed gift in Rock Polish. This means that it can pretty much outspeed almost every Pokemon in the UU tier (except maybe Crobat) and proceed to do major damage with relative ease.

However, Rhyperior's success ends there, because of it's low Base SpD, this makes Rhyperior's longevity cut a bit short. That, and it's more or less difficult to find opportunities to set up a Rock Polish, mostly because of Rhyperior's various weaknesses. But this doesn't necessarily make it bad, just a tad difficult to use, is all.

But those are my two cents on it. I've used it personally, and there are situations in which it has worked well for me, and situations where it has not. It depends how you use it, really.

Re: Why don't people like Ryperior?

A very ugly design. I don't see any nice part of its anatomy and I would really appreciate if you would enlighten me to it.

Re: Why don't people like Ryperior?

People love to complain about the Generation IV evolutions, but in fact most of them are quite great and Rhyperior is no exception. It is a greatly designed Pokémon and it looks far better than its boring pre-evolution, Rhydon.

Re: Why don't people like Ryperior?

It's really nicely designed, and Bertha's Rhyperior gave me a lot of trouble. However, I wouldn't really want to use one myself because I fail at using pokemon that are slow (with a few exceptions).

More than Rock Polish... Rhyperior is actually a pokémon meant for a metagame different than what people usually talk about: Doubles.

Trick Room Rhyperior is a beast in doubles: it still can be countered, of course, there are certain teams that stop it and special Fighters are also a problem, but it's MUCH harder to pin down in comparision not just because of its speed, but because it will spam ridiculously powerful EQ or Rock Slides and will more often than not be covered by something checking its counters.

In design? It's a giant armored drilling tank. It embodies the concept of a "tank" character.
And it makes sense to me as an evolution from Rhydon: Rhydon evolves from Rhyhorn becoming intelligent and biped and turning its simple horn into a drill, so Rhyperior evolves from Rhydon by using artificial protective plates and developing even more efficient manners of digging and manipulating rocks.
It makes perfect sense for it to be the way it is.

My complaint about its design though is the color scheme: It goes from the natural gray to brown. I think orange+gray would've looked much better.

Re: Why don't people like Ryperior?

I've heard a lot more people complain about Magmortar and Electivire than Rhyperior. To me, Rhyperior felt much more unnecessary, since Rhydon was a pretty powerful Pokemon on its own. However, this one definitely has more of a competitive edge with a few added moves and improved stats.

Design-wise, I like certain features of Rhyperior such as the forward-facing drill. I think it makes it seem more lethal and easier to use in battle. Also the club tail just looks like it could either clobber an opponent or even cause an Earthquake with a single slam. The cannon arms are very different, and I'm not sure why they added them into the design since they seem a bit superfluous, but I guess they are an improvement to those stubby arms of Rhydon. I do like Rhydon's colors and armor better though. I would have expected an evolved form to be a dark grey with layers of the plated armor Rhydon had, not dark brown with red squares decorating it. To me it didn't feel like a very logical progression from Rhyhorn's design to Rhyperior's.

Re: Why don't people like Ryperior?

Is nobody going to mention how it shoots Geodudes out of its hands?

Re: Why don't people like Ryperior?

Yeah, because covering Rhydon in ugly orange plates is such an upgrade.

Re: Why don't people like Ryperior?

I do like the addition of the cannon arms and club tail, but the weird orange plates are pretty much the definition of "tacked on". I seem to recall seeing a recolour where the plates were dark grey, and it just looked so much better.

I didn't particularly like Rhydon to begin with, but I can't say Rhyperior really improves on it at all. I think that might be part of what makes it unpopular, that if Rhyperior didn't exist then something else that needed an evolution might have gotten one.

(other people have commented on stats/competitive battling-wise, so I won't bother with that)

My first assumption is because some people didn't want change to their precious Gen 1 Pokemon? I won't even lie, a lot of the "add-on" Sinnoh evolutions made me annoyed at first... Now I'm okay with and even like a few.

When I look at Rhyperior it's like...I like it and I don't like it at the same time. I like the colors, arms, and tail, but the protective plates are weirdly all over the place (what's with the random crotch plate?), I don't like how they're drawn. (...also I miss the cute 'ears' Rhydon had tbh)

Not BAD (to me), but also not a big-favorite.

This is the first time I heard of "people" disliking Rhyperior. I thought it's because its tail is awkward, what with the rock at the tip. Another reason could be that Rhydon looks good enough as it is, and the way Rhyperior looks make it unnecessary, because (from my view) it is coloured differently that it looked too foreign. I guess one reason it was introduced is to give us a new ability in the form of Solid Rock, which is basically a weakness-reducing ability.

Thanks for reading.

Rhydon is one of my favorite Pokemon, so when Rhyperior came along I was a bit upset with it. Mostly because I still think an evolution to Rhydon is unnecessary: Rhydon to me is powerful enough, also it looks like a fully evolved Pokemon (also evolving from Rhyhorn pretty late at 42). On a more personal note, I think Rhydon looks better. This isn't to say I hate Rhyperior, I just don't think much of it.

I think Rhydon's the only pokemon I would not evolve if it were on my team.

The Rhyhorn line has always looked like armored dinsoaurs to me, and think the one reason they included the boulder tail was to reference the Ankylosaurus (seen below). The plating of the first to look a lot of like that of this creature, and it was also thought to stand on its hind legs at times like Rhydon and Rhyperior.

Personally, I'm not a fan of Rhyperior's colour scheme, tail shape, and general body structure. I prefer Rhydon.
