Why Grass?

Is this thread worthy? Grass is the most common plant, so i guess that's why they named it that? Idk...

It's actually a fair point. Why Grass? Why Steel? Plant and Metal would be much more accurate types.

But why not? It doesn't really take away from the game when the types are named something overly specific. I agree, Metal and stuff like that would be more appropriate, but does it matter?

It's a legit discussion. After all, "grass" is actually very specific. Sure, you get flower and grass based pokemon, like Oddish or Bellsprout, but then you get things like Torterra, which is quite obviously more "wood"- based than "grass"- based. So why didn't the English dubbers call it "plant" instead of "grass"?

Personally, I think it's because, at the time of the first generation, all grass-types (with the odd exception of Exeggcute and Exeggutor) were obviously based on plants that had the most in common with grass.

Exeggutor looks like a palm tree. Also, Paras(ect).

Why Grass? Why Steel? Because they roll off the tongue better. Next topic.

A better question is "why GameFreak decided to screw the Grass-type over so fucking badly?".

This. Ease of rolling off the tongue is something that many people making generic remakes/differential ripoffs of games often forget about. Those names were chosen for a reason.

Metal type just isn't as intimidating as steel type. And grass sounds nicer than plant. Like others have said, it's just how it sounds.

I think "Plant" is just way too broad a term, as it would obviously cover wooden plants and their lookalikes. I rather they rename it something like "Lawn", "Vegetable" or "Meadow" as to represent just the fleshy, nonwooden specimens of the plant kingdom and all other organisms that appear related to them, such as algae and mushrooms. Also, they could easily introduce a "Wood" type this way.

If I had to guess, it would be because the types are "symbolic" and don't necessarily cover the attributes of the Pokemon they describe. Sure, plant would be more fitting, but that's like saying that the Fire type would be describing Pokemon literally MADE of fire (which not many Pokemon are completely covered in flames, Ponyta and Rapidash are the only ones that come to mind). Steel type is the same, it's meant to represent the Pokemon's attributes but not be taken completely literally. Mawlie doesn't look like a Steel type at all, for example (more like a Dark type or something), but its attributes are of steel therefore, Steel typing.

Why is it Water type? The Pokemon aren't made of water. Why not Swimming type? [/sarcasm]

I blame it on shoddy translation during first gen. Everyone was used to it by the time it got better. I've always had a similar complaint about the Flying type- I wish it was more like a "wind" type.

Yeah, you could call all the types differently, and (sometimes) more accurate, but it doesn't sound as good. For example:
Psychic: Occult
Ghost: Paranormal
Grass: Plant
Fire: Heat
Water: Hydro
Flying: Aerial
Ground: Soil
Rock: Stone
Dark: Shadow
Electric: Static (Doesn't quite fit here, couldn't think of one)
Ice: Frozen
Steel: Metal
Normal: Basic
Dragon: Mythical
Bug: Insect
Poison: Toxin
Fighting: Melee

^^I think Rock should be Mineral. Melee is crap. Hydro is a pointless change, Aquatic would be better. And i think that there shouldn't be Normal/Flying pokemon just be the Bird type, and have the Flying type associated with the pokemon with wings that aren't birds. Like Charizard - Fire/Flying. Staravia - Bird. Crobat - Poison/Flying. Delibird - Ice/Bird, etc. Plant type wouldn't work because Fungi are completely different to Plants, they are closer relatated to animals i think. A more fitting name, I think, would be Flora.

Because Grass sounds more awesome than plant. Plus not all grass type pokémon are plants.

Yeah, it's pretty much a crap, less then 5 minute list I came up with.
