I don't say piplup is hated, Gliscor is lol..

Re: Why is Piplup hated so much?

I've disliked the Piplup species since before the beginning of DP because it was just so popular. I never saw what's the big deal about penguins and I really hated how some Piplup lovers dismissed Chimchar. But frankly, Dawn's Piplup is a giant brat and I think I would've disliked it either way, especially since it's so overexposed.

Re: Why is Piplup hated so much?

I don't think he's hated that much. Is he? At least I can't see any proper reasons for anyone hating Piplup, or any other Pokémon for that matter.

Well, I have heard some "he's stealing the spotlight" complaints, and something like "why doesn't it evolve!1!!", but at least he's not universally hated.

Re: Why is Piplup hated so much?

The fact that it became the seccond mascot is kind of annoying, but I loved him in movie 11, and he is kinda cute.

Re: Why is Piplup hated so much?

People are complaining about Piplup's constant spotlight, but I wouldn't say the Pokemon is hated at all.

Re: Why is Piplup hated so much?

Strange how you brought this up I was just about to start one like this I hate it because its trying to be a mascot by refusing to evolve and staying out of its pokeball and piplup is terrible I get trying to compete with chimchar and turtwig put pikachu, that's not going to happen espicially the fact of how I think prinplup is just as popular.

Re: Why is Piplup hated so much?

I really don't know...I am guessing that it almost took over pikachu as a mascot and no one really wanted another pokemon taking over pikachus roll.

Re: Why is Piplup hated so much?

I don't hate the Pokemon in general, it's just Dawn's Piplup's attitude.

Re: Why is Piplup hated so much?

Probably because it just gets thrown in when it really shouldn't. Take the Hippowdon/Butch and Cassidy episode. When Dawn goes to hug Pachirisu, it just randomly comes in going "Piplup Piplup Piplup Piplup!". It's totally unneccessary.

Re: Why is Piplup hated so much?

well... not to mention it's voice (still gives me a headache when it does a bubble beam)... I wish it would just evolve! (then it'll be better)

Re: Why is Piplup hated so much?

I don't generally hate Piplup, I just hate Dawn's Piplup. It has that really obnoxious "I think I'm tough" attitude. It's way too over the top in that sense. It whines incredibly too much.

Uhhh, the writers seem like they try to shove it in people's faces every episode, in a manner that practically screams "LOVE ME!" I just feel that we see too much of it. And sadly, to me, it feels like it forces itself in the spotlight, in that it's always attempting to show up whomever else has the attention for the episode. I feel this is done by way of shoving itself into situations, scenes, or plotlines that it really has nothing to do with, attempting to grasp at whatever feint excuse of relavence that it could possibly receive. And like I said in another thread, the only thing worse than watching something naturally "steal the spotlight", is when something is forcing it's way into people's attention.

Lastly, I realize this is completely subjective, but I would hate the Pokemon even on mute so it's not like this is what swayed me: It's dub voice sounds like it's being strangled or dying, which really isn't helped by the fact that it whines all the time.

Piplup enthusiasts and cult fanatics, don't flame me. It's just MY opinion, and a proper response to the topic.

Sadly, with its mascot status and both Kenny/Jun having a Prinplup and Empoleon respectively, Piplup is likely to stay as is for the entire span of DP.

I figure it'll stay as a Piplup for however long Dawn lasts as a main character, and it may evolve in her last ep or when she makes a guest appearance in the 5th gen region.

Re: Why is Piplup hated so much?

I love penguins so much, and by extension, I love Piplups, and I think they're adorable. Dawn's Piplup is no exception to being adorable, but I have several complaints with it.

1.) It is a whiny brat. Its personality is annoying. I realize not every character has to be unicorns and lollipops, but this isn't just a negative trait, it's an annoying one.
2.) It hogs screen time. It gets so much attention without any good reason why, and doesn't really add anything to the show when it does appear. It has pretty much become a second Pikachu, always having to reflect everything Pikachu does when the current events do not directly relate to one of them. It's almost like they're trying to insult their fans by pigeonholing children into "boys who like the boy character with a Pikachu" and "girls who like the girl character with a Piplup" and then trying to be "fair" by artificially evening out their screen time.
3.) Its moves are absolutely ridiculous. I realize this entire show suspends reality quite a bit. I can tolerate bolts of lightning moving slower than light, or even knocking out a Ground type, or moving fast making a bunch of fake copies of something, but what Piplup does crosses the line big time. It can float in the air for an indefinite amount of time, its bubbles can make freaking statues (Spongebob, is that you?), and the mother of all ridiculous moves, Whirlpool. It literally conjures a whirlpool of water. On dry land. Above its head. And throws it. What the heck.

Re: Why is Piplup hated so much?

I kinda dug Piplup at first when D/P started, what with it showing actual spunk and personality right out of the gate. But very quickly over time, Dawn's has pretty much devolved into an attention hog. And I know the reason for most of this is because Piplup wants to be portrayed as equal to Pikachu because penguins are teh shiznit this decade for some reason or another. So having that as an advantage, Piplup's got a huge fanbase as well as a notable amount of people who are annoyed/sick of it being shoved down our throats all the time.

I mean... as far as the anime goes, Chimchar has an excellent ongoing storyline that hasn't really been tapped into enough, and Turtwig/Grotle had great potential that just faded (though maybe it'll make some kind of comeback with this evolution and all?) in favor of Piplup Piplup Piplup. And then we get episodes of other trainers with Piplups. We've got major characters with Piplup's evolutions so it's almost guaranteed that Dawn's won't be evolving.

And... it doesn't help that Piplup in the dub is just irritating as hell to listen to. Pochama's got a pretty awesome voice, but seriously what were they thinking by giving Piplup a Torchic voice when it's obvious the two are nothing alike?

There's plenty of good reasons to not like Piplup, but I suppose in some sense there's reasons to like it as well. Main thing that cheeses me off is that it makes the Starter bias all screwed up again. They had it just right in Kanto, but everyone was undervalued in Johto and only Bayleef got some form of character development (doesn't help that I hate the whole Chikorita line on principle). Hoenn was fine except Mudkip/Marshtomp got the shaft because it ended up being with Brock.

Maybe that's how D/P "makes up" for underusing Mudkip. By shoving the next gen's water starter in our faces...?

Re: Why is Piplup hated so much?

Dawn's Piplup is just pathetic. It is annoying. I wish someone or actually some Pokemon will beat him so much that this annoying brat will understand that its behaviour is just pathetic.

Re: Why is Piplup hated so much?

I actually don't dislike or like Dawn's Piplup. That's just about it.

Re: Why is Piplup hated so much?

I personally don't mind the Piplup.
