Maybe someone posted this or not, but...Ash has is about 13 now, and he's been battling with Pikachu for YEARS! Why is Pikachu not like...level over 9000? He gets owned by noobs in the newer episodes, but yet...Pikachu has defeated some of the toughest people around. WTF?! Why is the anime so retarded?

Pikachu's power gets reset at each generation so Ash doesn't dominate the Gym leaders or regular trainers with it.

We noticed this when DP started. Pikachu went from beating a Regice at the end of AG, to losing to Paul's Elekid.

i've got a feeling that dogasu's gonna come here and say something like, "the show's been around for 13 years and you've JUST noticed that?"

Exactly what above user said.

BUt still, it does bring up a good question about how the series really connect. I like to think of each one as a new AU. Once you see it that way, it makes it a bunch easier

There was an interview/article somewhere that said the anime doesn't go by levels but by skill and strategy instead.

That would explain why weak pokemon like Magikarp still have a chance at winning in the anime.

Yeah, just make it seem like the series before never happened.

But Paul was supposedly just as much an experienced trainer as Ash was, and knowing how Paul trains his Pokemon I actually see how Pikachu got beat. It's everyone else and his Pikachu I don't get. Gym Leaders especially.

the gym leaders are probably all extremely strong. they just *program* their pokémon to be strong and aggressive on powerhouses such as pikachu. some leaders choose to not do that. leaders such as lt. surge could fit into that category.

really, a trainer in the animé could get icicle badge before getting the coal badge, as on the show, you can get the badges in whatever order.

I always think that gym leaders have multiple teams, like one for people with 1-2 badges, another for people with 3-4 badges, and so on.

Maybe informally, as a function of keeping the strongest from burning out, but by and large gym leaders can't tell offhand how strong a trainer is. Personalities can be deceiving, after all.

Ash is not a noob! Pikachu's power reset every region, the writers don't want Pikachu 2b extremely strong and level doesn't exist in the anime -.-

I would like to see Team Rocket get a Pokemon that easy beats Pikachu, and sends Ash and the gang blasting off for once.

Wouldn't we all?

Anyway, an in-story explanation is probably that plot-o's thing someone came up with a while back.

Here is what I think:

Pikachu and any pokemon is like an MMA fighter or a boxer and the pokemon battle is like a big match. For whatever reason, sometimes a fighter has an off-week no matter how talented and big and strong they are. It could be because of lazy training that particular week, fatigue, injury, or simply just not being focused for that particular fight.

I think it is similar to this for pokemon in the anime.

Because Ash spends all his cash traveling to a new region and can't afford Plot-O's for Pikachu.

I would have to go with the theory that Pikachu's strength gets reset each generation. As a result of his experience with Ash, naturally Pikachu should be more adept in defeating some of the gym leaders. It's not really safe to say that each region's set of gym leaders is stronger than the last, because in several cases, it is Ash's newer pokemon that end up defeating these gym leaders.

In addition, it would be very boring if Pikachu just swept an entire gym leader's team in less than a minute. It would make less of what may end up as a good gym battle. Remember that fight with Wattson? Do we want that to happen again?

Also, the Pikachu species in general has very low defensive stats (in the games). It's not surprising for a Pikachu to be OHKO'd in the games. This could explain why Ash's Pikachu has been defeated several times in the anime, and why it seems that one hit can do him in.
