I love little Pikachu; I'm a guy but even I think it's cute. But I can't help but wonder why Pikachu became the mascot of the franchise.

I know it was the anime? But why? Why Pikachu? No.25, electric mouse? What was so special about it? Any thoughts?

ashes first pokemon... and the first pokemon shown that was cute =/

you do have a point, but I really do wonder why a pikachu instead of a different pokemon. I mean theres hundreds that could of appeared. i think that Dratini would make a good mascot instead though. Its cute, its dragon type, and Its just plain awsome.

I think they picked him/ her... hang on what is pickachu?... because its the first pokemon that would not evolve unless you gave him a particular stone, so that when people watched the show and his pokemon had had not evolved after millions of battles,.. plus I think they wanted ash to have all three starters any way.. so that would be pointless giving him a bulbasaur right at the begining!

In Pokespe, Red received a Pikachu immediately after Bulbasaur (although Poliwhirl was his first). As the manga progressed, Pikachu's abilities became very applicable in things (the whole thundershock the crap out of anything bit), and as such, Pikachu kinda crept it's way into a spotlight. I honestly think it could be related to that?

Perhaps writers of the anime felt Pikachu deserved a large role, or saw how useful it could be for various plots?

Or maybe they just always saw that it could've been like a fourth starter?

But as far as the topic title, the reason why it's popular is definitely because of Ash and the anime.

thats true but no use argueing over it i mean i would agree with dratini... but poeple would be wondering what it was when the show started pikachu was just upfront and there plus everyone loves electical rats xD

Who knows. . Pippi (Clefairy) was actually supposed to be the mascot, but when Satoshi got Pikachu, it became really popular because 1) people think it's cute (I'm definitely not one of those people), and 2) it has electric attacks. But, mostly, I think it's the nostalgia, not exactly Pikachu, that makes Pikachu so popular.

Personally, I prefer Raichu, but. . =/ Whatev.

Clefairy was originally going to be the mascot but due to Pikachu's Pouplaurness , it got to be the new mascot.

Pikachu is the 2nd coming of Peyton Manning. That enough should answer your question.

Not sure if this is true, but I read a while ago that when Green came out in Japan, Scyther and Pikachu were the two most popular Pokemon. When it was time to make the anime, they decided to use Pikachu cause they thought Scyther would be too fierce for a beginner (and Scyther can't ride on Ash's back).

I know how you people feel. Pikachu's a nice Pokemon, but they're showcasing him way too much.

Hey, you want to know how bad the showcasing got?

In Pokemon Dash, you could only play as Pikachu.

Isn't that unfair? They only did it because of his popularity.

Meh. I am rather indifferent to Pikachu really.

Pippi did appear as the main Pokemon (in the Pocket Monsters manga, at least) and I believe he still is. His appearance there is quite different from his species usual looks, but then again, everything there seems a bit odd. Kinda makes me want to get Pocket Monsters (if only I could understand it better. :p)

The one and only answer is: because Nintendo said so.

It's a harsh way to put it, but that's pretty much what it is. :p Some people will worship whatever gets built up by a company, regardless of how good it actually may be.

It's just like wrestling: John Cena may be good on a microphone and has great workrate, but his wrestling ability could use some improvement. However, kids mercilessly worship him as a god, just because WWE says he's cool. This is also the case with Pikachu. Because Nintendo is pushing him as a mascot, he is the most popular Pokemon, regardless of how deserving or not deserving of it he actually is. If they chose, say, Dragonite or Clefairy to be the mascot, it would be the most popular Pokemon instead of Pikachu. The show definitely helped to build it up the most, though.

As to why they chose Pikachu specifically, they more than likely wanted to appeal to people's sense of cuteness. Why it over the countless other cute Pokemon at the time, I have no idea. It being a higher up's choice is my guess.

Perhaps it's because it appeals to both boys and girls. Some other cute Pokémon, like Clefairy and Jigglypuff are very "girly" in a sense. Pikachu actually looks uni-sex.

apparently pikachu was very popular in the video games because it was cute,so the people must of picked it so both boys/girls would like it. Its strong also and cute among lots of people.. i dont really worry about pikachu that much.

XD lol TR james!
and dancing pichu!
