Why is Silver so popular among the fandom?

Why do people think Silver is such a cool rival?

He physically and mentally abuses you, and possibly his Pokemon to some degree, he possibly sexually harasses you once (when he supposedly yells at you to take off your Rocket uniform) and whines about how "weak" you are even though you beat him, because you care about your Pokemon and think of them as your friends?

Your bratty/cocky rival (Green) and friendly ones (Brendan/May and Pearl) can't be "worse" then him.

Before he gets his Heel Face Turn he's a mega jerk. And not the cool sort of jerk, like Paul from the anime, either.

Before HgSs he was awesome. After he was awesome and sexy. Coming from a guy who likes girls 100% that's a compliment.

Annnd... because he breaks away from the Bratty/Kind rival like attitude, and becomes the bad ass of them all
 
He has a nice design, and doesn't look cute like the other rivals, but still..

I don't see why he's so popular.
 
He's a bad boy and the girls love bad boys.
 
Well, let's give a little overview here, shall we?

Green is lighthearted enough to crack a joke occasionally, but he's mostly a cocky jerk who's so full of himself it's a wonder he doesn't explode. At least, at first. He seems to have gotten better by the time he's the Viridian Gym Leader.

Brendan/May is less of a rival and more of an assistant.

Wally, from the same set of games as Brendan/May, is a little kid trying to prove to himself and everyone else that he can do things on his own.

Pearl is some kid who drinks too much Mountain Dew. Seriously, someone give that guy a sedative.

Silver is easily the darkest of the rivals—humorless, demanding, abusive, sadistic, sometimes downright evil (remember that he stole two Pokémon, his starter and his Sneasel). To top it off, he's the son of the previous generation's main antagonist. All of this makes him a massive departure from the other rivals. So, not only is he badass, he's also unique.

He's also the best looking.

I openly acknowledge, however, that my opinion of Silver is also influenced by nostalgia, so my reasoning is unquestionably flawed.

...he doesn't strip you naked for crying out loud. He rips off the uniform and reveals your regular clothes.

You should really tell that to all of the peverted Japanese artists drawing RivalxKotone pr0nz. But in reality, Silver doesn't get any... *slaughtered*

Because he's the only rival who has balls. Literally. Green and Blue aren't going to throw/hit you, this guy would.

The point is, he's more of a threat, thus making him, in some peoples eyes, a better rival that the others.

Me? I like his because his appearance is pretty cool, and as said, he has balls.
 
That's like saying why Red is so epic

1. He's unique look at his team

2. He's like a anti-hero

3. He's a badass

4. He's Gio's son
 
Like everyone else is saying, I think it's because he's the only rival who could really be considered a villain, plus the fact that he changes at the end, and you could even find him to battle again on certain days (this is GSC I'm talking about, since I don't really know much about HGSS).

I personally don't like him, though. He just doesn't interest me.

It's the same thing as the Contest and Pokethlon outfit change, it's pretty much strip and redress, but on screen so they can't you know, show anything. :p It can be implied he undressed the character, especially concidering the fact some of those clothes wouldn't layer like that (Hat and shoes especially). And Raine is right, Goldenrod scene fanart is still wrong, even when I have the R-18 filter ON. :scared: Some of it I wish I could un-see...

Personally I don't care for Silver. I like a Barry as a rivel more so. I'd rather have a rival who, while still pushing you to be better than them, isn't an ass.

At least Silver gets a Crobat in the end (as well as having his Starter out of the pokeball in HGSS), so at least he cares for his Pokémon. As another bit, in the Clair/Lance double battle in HGSS, it was originally to be Lance and You VS Clair and Silver. He pushes Clair and says "No I want to be with you!" So he's not so mean in the end. (Of course that line probably spawned half the Kotone x Rival stuff, but whatever) ... granted his teams sucks as Lance's Gyarados owned everything on his and my team but that's besiiiides the point *mumblewishIhadbeenwithlancegrumble*
 
While Silver is a great rival, it annoys me when people think that all rivals have to be mean jerkasses to be good.

For example, Pearl/Barry is hated as a rival because he's a hyperactive kid who runs around everywhere instead of being a jerk.

But did you notice? That's rival material too. He may not be mean and nasty like Silver, but his behavior is enough to motivate you to crush him. Besides I would personally find it more embarassing to lose to a hyperactive kid that flails around than someone like Silver.

As said before, we got Wally, a sickly kid that sets out to prove himself- even if it means being rivals with your character. And Brendan/May seem more like their competing with your character to complete the Pokedex research. Green/Blue is the typical childhood friend bully.

There are many different kinds of rivals out there. Besides it would be boring if every rival was a Silver clone with a different sprite.

^This. And his new design is kinda hot.....I'm just sayin'.:crush:

I didn't even notice there was that much "hate" for Barry.... he's another one I like. I think he's flippin' hilarious and entertaining, in the games and the anime...to me anyway.
