Why is Staravia being treated so badly in DP?

One of the worst things about Ash's bird types during Kanto and Johto was that Ash only used them to scout for TR's balloon and hardly ever used them in battle. Pidgeotto and Noctowl both hardly got any screentime, and Pidgeot was released and Noctowl was left to rot away in Oak's lab for all eternity.

In AG the writers reversed this sad fate for the flying types, and Swellow was Ash's second most used Pokemon right after Grovyle. Not only that, but Swellow lasted on Ash's roster for nearly 200 episodes, which was unheard of for a flying type. Swellow not only had major starring roles in the Gyms, Hoenn league matches, and Frontier Brains, but it also even battled Deoxys in Battle Frontier too. It was by far Ash's strongest flying type and proved the birds don't have to be treated like crap.

Now in DP Staravia seems to be follow the same fate as Pidgeotto and Noctowl. Staravia is hardly ever used and spends most its time just searching for Team Rocket.

Why do the writers bother giving Ash another bird and handling it badly? Its almost like we're regressing and the bird types are being treated like crap again. DP has done some truly weird things with Ash's Pokemon this generation, and I don't know why the bird type is being treated badly again.

I think you're really exaggerating
It had 2 Gym battles in one of them you can say it starred and it trained to learn two attacks
I think it's ok... it isn't ngelected and isn't overused
Also we should wait until a certain Poké is Oak'd before we decide how good its run was... Staravia still has the rest of Sinnoh and possibly BF

There are only two Gyms left now for Staravia to participate. Only Candice and Volkner are left, and I certainly don't see it being used in an electric type Gym unless Ash is crazy. Hell, an ice type Gym is a major disadvantage for it too. So Staravia only has two opportunities to be used, both of which give it a major disadvantage?

Then there is still Grotle and Monferno, who are bound to be used in those Gyms. I think the problem is the writers waited too long to evolve some of Ash's Pokemon this gen, and now there is a major imbalance of screentime.

As good as DP has been, the writers still make these bad pacing mistakes and it screws over the entire arc.

Staravia also has the problem in Gliscor who steals some of its thunder as a flier and is a much stronger and versatile Pokemon.

I agree with Piplup. It's not treated that badly. Sure, it isn't used as much as Swellow was but it has its moments.

Well, I'd just say wait for the sinnoh league. Staravia (staraptor hopefully) will have its money-time

Well, if you look at the Sinnoh gyms as a whole, there isn't much help offered from a flying/normal type outside of Natane and Sumomo. (which is also where he was used)

So far they go with the DP teams so currently I expect to see these
It's also should be noted how in AG despite how they used Juan instead of Wallace, they had him use Wallace's RS team
I guess maybe they plan the Gyms from the beginning and prefer not to change them?

Candice has a Medicham, right? Maybe Staravia will take care of it

She does have Abomasnow though, so Staravia still has a chance at that.

But I think that Staravia may seem to be treated this badly is because unlike Hoenn, Sinnoh doesn't really have a lot of gyms for a flying type to star in. If you think about it, Swellow never truly starred in a gym, but it did participate. But with Sinnoh's Rock, Ice, Steel, and Electric gyms, they don't give a flyer a real chance, unless they have dual type Pokemon. But like I said, Candice stil has Abomasnow, so it's not dead yet.

I agree with piplup too, staravia is ok and not treated to badly. Its just has been a little underused, but I can see why. It was strong when it learned brave bird though. Hopefully it will get to Starraptor before too long and it will be used in E4 battles

You know what I just noticed.....Johto was the only region to have enough gyms for Noctowl(a flying type) to star in. I mean, if Ash would have caught him soon enough, he had Bugsy(gym 2), Morty(4th), and Chuck(5th). On top of that, there was gym 1 which could have been like gym 6 in Hoenn, and then gym 3 which would have given Noctowl neither and advantage or disadvantage....just a chance to show what he could do. Basically....Johto was the region for a Bird pokemon to truly star in....so sad they didn't utilize those gyms properlly to redeem themselves for what they did to Pidgeotto.

Staravia still has gym 7 in which it is possible for him to participate in, and then the league. If they do a BF...then there will be more chances for him to shine. Let's not count him out yet, there is still a chance. I mean, it was not until gym 6 that Swellow really became a star. Everything up to that point was about Treecko/Grovyle and corphish. The same thing is going on except with Buizel and now chimchar....so there is still a chance.

Yeah, I agree with you there... in Sinnoh you have rock (not good), Grass (Effective?), Fighting (effective), Water (Normal), Ghost (Normal), Steel (Not effective), Ice (Ice moves super effetive on flying), Electric (super effective on flying) most of these don't have weakness to flying types (Ice and Electric are super effective against flying types) so I don't see Staravia being used much in D/P

Yes we have abombasnow in Ice gym, but if it uses an ice move on staravia, it could be KO'd easily enough.

I guess it'll evolve by the time of the League and get a huge role there. Like Glalie in Hoenn. It doesn't got much type advantages in the gyms so it can be hardly used at all.

I really wish he hadn't got Starly and just used Gligar/Gliscor as his main flyer. The "Catches Normal/Flying Pokemon" in each region is starting to get really boring. I hope from now on he gets Flying-types that are unique and not-Normal - like Gliscor.

"Gliscor" and "flying" are 2 words we should use with caution... I really can't see him battle in the sky against a staraptor or a skarmory. He's just surfing on the wind

By the way, i've always said staravia/raptor will show its potential during the league, maybe against jun's staraptor

Hopefully Ash doesn't leave Staravia somewhere, promise to come back for it and forget about it all together....

I think it'll make returns in fights against Candice and/or Volkner, I mean come on, we've all seen Ash using pokemon that have a disadvantage and yet, he still wins, well most of the time. That's probably when it goes Staraptor on everybody.
