I just noticed something

maybe its called Pocket Monsters not just because the pokeballs can fit in your pocket, but because the hand held games can too, also the cards, not much for the big system games but the first games are on a handheld game, but yeah maybe thats why its called Pocket Monsters

anyway DUH for me

They were originally called pocket monsters because in Japan insects are a very rare pet (or monster, because some beetles look like monsters.) to have among children.

I read somewhere that the game was originally supposed to be about bugs, but it didn't get such a good review, so the designers started to make up sketches of weird creatures.
This later became the actually pocket monsters games we know and love.

Someone please correct me if i'm wrong, or if they want to add anything to what i've said.

Sincerely,
Farfetch'd

didnt know they put bugs in thier pockets

heheh

I notice that the use of Pocket Monsters has fallen out of the vernacular, and that even the Japanese media seem to more commonly use the contraction "Pokemon."

Of course, this is pretty common: i.e.: Famicom (Family Computer), Draque (Dragon Quest)...

Because they're monsters...

And you keep them in your pocket...

/thread

Because they couldn't get the rights to "Capsule Monsters." Thus, they went with - Pocket Monsters! And... um... when has anyone kept the actual monsters in their pockets?

...

Actually, thinking about them going into a "pocket" in timespace when they're stored makes some amount of sense.

To me, it's called "Pocket Monsters" because the creatures are kept in Poke Balls, which are, in turn, kept in the pockets.

yes im just saying it might be more then just the pokeballs

maybe breaking a fourth wall and talking about the handheld games

I think it's also because the concept of keeping a monster in your pocket appeals to young children who like to daydream about fantasy worlds- what little kid wouldn't want their very own monster to play with and protect them? And because the first Pokémon games were on a small system (GameBoy), you... nearly could fit it in your pocket.

Or something akin to that.

any of the handheld systems can fit in my pockets cause theyre HUGE

Yeah, the games, the show, the movies are still called "Pocket Monsters." Some of the manga too.

The cards weren't made until after the games were sold. (Well, I don't know how early they started working on the cards, so...) Other than that I agree.

If I recall correctly, the series was originally going to be called Capsule Monsters (I think Poké Balls were going to be capsules), but they couldn't trademark that so they changed to Pocket Monsters.

Then due to the small screen on the Game Boy, they had to shorten Pocket Monsters to Pockemon, which since Pocket Monsters was too similar to some franchise called Monster in my Pocket in America, they used the short form Pockemon, but they probably released that Pockemon looks stupid and spelled it Pokémon.

I've never heard this before, I know the game was based around the idea of bug catching, but I'm pretty sure the orignal idea turned out similar to our pocket monster (not ONLY bugs)

I'll look into it :smokin:
