Why put Steven in HGSS instead of Wallace?

Aren't the third versions of each game considered to be the "canon" ones? As most know, in Emerald Wallace is the champion instead of Steven.

Technically shouldn't Wallace be the Hoenn champion visiting Johto instead of Steven?

Well, does Steven call himself Champ?

Does Steven identify himself as the champion in the HGSS games? Or does he just say, "I'm from the Hoenn region, my name is Steven."

First hint to R/S remakes!

But seriously, does it really matter why?

Well he'll probably be champion in RS remakes, but it doesn't really matter much. I guess Steven just reprisents the two games (and Hoenn) much better. I'm glad they chose him really.

He's the ultimate champ, better than Wallace! Like Red is to Lance.
In hypothetical RSG5, it could be like Emerald where Wallace is champ, Juan is GL number 8, and Steven is 'Red'.

Or Steven could be champion the first time you challenge E4 and second time you find that Wallace is new champion and Steven has moved on, where you find him in Emerald.

Steven has ties to Devon and is most likely making a business trip to Silph.

Makes sense to me

I'm just happy with extra plot points. So Steven makes a cameo. This has little realtion to his status a champion/ex champion. And like has been said, it could just be a business trip

I side with the business trip thing. Or maybe he went looking for rocks. Maybe we should see if he shows up in Rock Tunnel.

Considering he's mentioned in Pt, there you go. He stopped by Kanto on the way home. Remember, Sinnoh and Hoenn are on completely opposite sides of the Pokémon nation, and being that DPPtHGSS happens three years after RSEFRLG...

Both Steven and Cynthia appearing in HGSS is amusing. Its like they wanted the two other champions to make an appearance in this game.

Steven was also rumored to have been the owner of the villa at the Resort in Platinum. I'm glad Hoenn is making a lot of influence in these two games- saves the trouble of making pointless Gen III remakes.
