Why was Misty's mallet dropped from the show so quickly?

In very early Kanto, Misty used a mallet that appeared for maybe 3-4 episodes and then was never shown again for the rest of her run. She would comically hit Ash/Brock (and I think Psyduck?), over the head with it if they did something stupid.

Somewhere around mid-Kanto its not used anymore, and then of course by late Kanto its totally gone and she never uses it again throughout the rest of her run.

Why did the writers drop it so quickly? It could have been an interesting running gag, instead it appears in maybe 4 episodes at the most out of her 275 episode run.

probably because of The TV-Y Rating
and for people not to say bad things about the show (JYNX)

I certainly wonder. Also, Jessie uses a mallet sometimes, such as in Battle aboard the St. Anne when James is pretending to be a 'coooool' girl.

I actually cared more about the log she had in the eighth episode. It seemed like she was ready to bash Ash in the face with it.

I take it for the show evolving into it's stride. Early Kanto was all about the animators discovering what the Pokemon world was about. Hammer gags are nothing new for other anime so they dropped it in here. Over time the world evolved into something that needed less of it so it phased itself out.

Real world animals I'd also include in this category.

I remember Jessie using a mallet on more than one occassion, but Misty? I honestly can't recall a single instance. A log and her own foot, sure. But no mallet.

Either way, it's not just limited to blunt objects. All the slapstick violence sort of pettered out over time. A real shame too, as it's one of the few things I wish the show had kept around. Even though it's a story driven show, pokemon is still just a light hearted cartoon at it's core, so I don't feel it'd be quite as out-of-place as one would assume.

Iris lobbing a berry full pelt at Dent's face for another 'lol, dragon sneeze' comment? Awesome.
Dent momentarily loosing it and violently shaking Pikachu for frying another cloche? Awesome.

Makes you wonder why people keep saying, "Misty constantly hit people over the head with mallets." Its like people enjoy making up things about Misty that never actually happened in the show.

She did use it at least 3-4 times, I'd have to rewatch Kanto to remember the exact instances though.

Yeah, I did think she used it on Psyduck in 1 episode, but I can't remember which one.

But yeah, these are all instances in very early Kanto. The writers were not sure how they wanted the anime to be back then.

The School of Hard Knocks is the one where she used a log, Rayne. Did she use a mallet there too? It's been so long since I've watched some of these...

Hey now, Mallet, no mallet. It doesn't matter. The important thing is that she violently lashed out at people.

Can you gives us some examples? I don't remember anything about mallets. But I remember her loving physical violence.

I imagined it's because pulling by the ear is more interesting (in regards to taking Brock away), I guess? Still, I never noticed this.

Thanks for reading.

Who knows? There are a lot of things surrounding Misty's character that are generally more myths in the fandom rather than anything she did in the show.

I do remember Jessie also using mallets and paper fans much more than Misty ever did.

Huh? You're the one who started the thread and not know about the matter? I only found two instances of her using a mallet. First one is come from the third episode:

In same sequence she also used her "punching" and "kicking" skills, so mallet is not really significant for her character. For instance, in Giselle's episode she used a log in similar fashion. Second instance is come from Ninja-themed poison gym, 30 episodes later:

It's a completely different mallet and clearly not the same one. I think she didn't really have one in the first place. So that's all...
