I mean, she gives out her real name anyways so it seems pretty weird in retrospect. Not that I don't like her more boyish design when it comes to female characters in Manga but this's been bugging me for some time.

Anybody wanna speculate?

Did she? She never called herself a boy.
Everyone called her by male pronouns and she never saw the need to contradict them.

I've actually heard some theories that it was because Kusaka wanted a female protagonist in an otherwise Shonen action series but added the sombrero to hide her gender from the editorial staff. You know how kids media can be: tight wad executives just love each demographic to have specific needs based on their own biases.

I don't know about the japanese originals, but in the english, if I remember it correctly, Erika was the first person who used male pronouns to her. Others just think with male pronouns, but never openly used it against her. She supposed to hide her identity in the first place, so there is no reason for her to correct them at this point.

Yet she kept revealing her identity.

It’s been a while since I’ve read the manga, but I think that was at the point where hiding her identity wasn’t needed anymore. So, she just dropped her “disguise”.

Regarding why she didn’t contradict people when they defined her a “he”, well, isn’t that actually beneficial for her? What’s better way to hide from other people if not behind other genders? We saw many movies that pull that kind of trick, like Mulan.

Maybe it wasn’t completely intentional, but it surely makes some sense.
