Whenever I try to trade with someone over Wi-Fi, I get the following error:

Communication error. You have
been disconnected from Nintendo
Wi-Fi Connection.

For help, visit
www.nintendowifi.com.

The thing is, the Wi-Fi Battle Tower and the GTS work fine, and the support website doesn't help. How do I fix this? Does it matter that I'm using a Nintendo Wi-Fi USB Connector?

Does it not give you an error code to at least maybe narrow it down?

It could be your firewall, have you tried disabling it? Does it do the same thing when you try to battle? Also, (speaking from experience) the USB connector generally is less reliable than an actual wireless router.

Its in his first post.

Nintendo's USB connector sucks, as does their wifi.

I'm not sure how the websites not helping. Have you tried putting in the error code?

Didn't see the code you posted, my bad.

Well here it is straight form the site:
Error Code: 86420

This particular error is typically caused by a firewall interfering with a successful connection to the Nintendo WFC. Please read the following information.

1. Do you receive this error every time you try and connect?
* If you receive this error every time, please proceed to step #2 on this page.
* If you receive this error only when playing a particular friend, then it is likely a problem with the friend's firewall settings on their connection. If possible, recommend to your friend that they visit the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection help area of http://support.nintendo.com for possible solutions.

2. Ensure your router has the latest firmware installed. Visit your router manufacturer's website and look for any updated firmware that may be available (these are typically found under "downloads" or by searching for your particular model number). Contact your router manufacturer for additional assistance.

3. Try manually assigning an IP address to your DS. For step-by-step instructions, please click here.

4. If the above information does not solve your problem, you may consider adjusting your router's Port Forwarding settings*. Each router is unique, so consult the owner's manual for your router or contact the manufacturer for specific information on working with your router's ports. For your information:
* If you are prompted for a device or profile name, you can enter anything you like (such as Nintendo DS, etc.).
* The starting port to open is 1, the ending port to open is 65535 (or as high as the router will allow).
* Protocols will need to be set to UDP only.
* Set the IP address for the ports to forward to the same as the DS's static IP that you assigned in the previous step on this page.

It doesn't seem like its assuming you can't connect at all, actually it specifically states:

I still say its your firewall.

Then why can it successfully do the Battle Tower and the GTS?

I'm thinking maybe because when you connect to the GTS and or the Wi-Fi battle tower, your not actually connecting to someone else. Rather, I would say, your connecting to a server and your basically downloading data. But, while in a trade or battle, your actually interacting with that other person. So your sending and receiving data in real time, that's why it seems to me to be a firewall issue with you or the other person. I have experienced the same problem with several online games I play on my computer, for example: I could connect to the lobby in warcraft, but couldn't connect to any games. So I had to setup my firewall to allow it, and sometimes even open specific ports on my router. Right now, I have the Nintendo WFC added to the white list of my firewall and I have opened the specific port for it on my router, otherwise it wouldn't work for me. I assume you have tried connecting to several other people? (Just to make sure its not there firewall that is interfering?)
