It happened. Even with a year headstart, the Xbox 360 has been eclipsed by the Nintendo Wii in sales. According to independant tracker Video Game Chartz, the Wii just passed the 360 this week. Gotta numbers fetish? Here's the breakdown:

Wii: 10.57 Million sold (3.46M Japan, 4.24M America, 2.87M Others)
Xbox 360: 10.51 Million sold (0.43 Japan, 6.75 America, 3.32 Others)
PS3: 4.32 Million sold (1.13M Japan, 1.87 America, 1.32 Others)

Yes, that same info is directly above in handy chart form. So... Japan's a big gapping hole for Microsoft, huh? Always has been!

lol PS3 is still way behind. They have little to no hope catching up.

It's still too early to tell who the "winner" is (as if such a thing matters anyway...). Sony may be way behind on the hardware, but they can still come out on top if they really work on getting a lot of grade A titles on the market.

Very true, but it really doesn't seem likely. Unless they've got a secret weapon or two concealed.

I'm surprised this didn't happen sooner since Japan hates the "gaijin" 360 so much. The figures look alright for the PS3, clearly not a huge hit like the Wii is, but considering the Xbox had a year on them I think they'll catch up to it sooner or later.

XD XD XD That's too funny! XD XD XD

I LOVE IT!!!

It's sort of a kick in the pants for both Sony and Nintendo since it pokes fun at the PS3's underselling and the Wii's overselling (causing shortages).

Yeah, because people have totally been making fun of Nintendo for doing too well.

Well... Can't blame them for selling better than the 360. I mean, the only thing going for the 360 is Halo 3. =/

I kind of think the 360 will come back on top by year's end, but will loose even more in the spring. I'm just not confident that Nintendo can keep up with demand to make it stay number 1, but you never know. If they can keep up with demand, then I see Nintendo bouncing back November/December.

I know of a few people, one a die-hard 360 will win fan, and one who is sort of our moderator in discussion. I now have some neat little numerical info to rub in his face. Oh, and before I go, WII!

How?
Super Smash Bros. Brawl is going to be HUGE for Wii sales.
The fall will sorta belong to the 360 because of Halo, but Galaxy and Brawl will crush all competition.

Are you serious? You mean you never heard about the software line up that the 360 had this past year? You never heard of Gears of War, Crackdown, and Dead Rising? Nor have you heard of the upcoming software line up that the 360 will have this Fall other than Halo 3? You never heard of Bioshock, Mass Effect, Blue Dragon, and Ace Combat 6?

The Wii might have trouble keeping a hold of that lead, since there will undoubtedly be shortages of hardware by Christmas. If they can get new production facilities on line by Q1 2008 however, things may be very different.

The thing to be looking at right now is the American market. The Wii has won Japan, and it's going at a pace now that it'll likely win the PAL markets. America is where the real battle this generation will be. Sony can't afford to lose, but they can't win without a significant consumer price cut, and lots of AA titles. They're already in trouble from the cost of manufacturing though, so I'd say that's a forlorn hope. XBox360 however has none of those worries, and is reducing its price point to compete with the Wii. With the titles coming out over the next few months, we'll soon know how much more room in the market there is for them.

I guess what I was trying to say was what Archaic said, Halo is MS's Mario so it will definitely sell. It has enough hype and fame around it to sell to those that may not even care about that genre.
With the Wii, we know Mario, Metroid, and Smash will sell, but it's hard to say what their impact will be on pushing systems because Nintendo is basically selling out as it is without any of those games. The 360 is assumed to have more built up reserves as with a ready stock of systems in stores already.

I think it's safe to assume that Nintendo has their reserves also, but if the jump isn't more than normal it won't really be able to sell anymore than last Christmas due to short supplies. As for the 360, they probably have more holiday stock, meaning they'll probably sell more.

If that happens there will just be the big three selling systems in Q1 where post holiday rush is gone and normal gamers can buy it. Nintendo's pretty hard to predict right not, though.

It's good that Nintendo is finally back on top after two generations of living in Sony's shadow, but how long will this success last? Nintendo's new strategy is to release wave after wave of games that are targeted at the casual gamer, and although this has obviously worked very well, I don't see it working for much longer. Nintendo wants to attract non-gamers into the world of gaming, and they've managed to attract a fairly large portion of them with all the fun, innovative casual games they've been releasing. But now that they've got this new audience, they're going to have to slowly stop constantly making these types of games, because frankly, they're short, easy and have little to no replay value. Casual gamers won't remain casual gamers for long. Now that they play video games more often, they'll become better at games, and want more challenging stuff, maybe even hardcore gamer games. If Nintendo just keeps dishing out the casual gamer stuff, and almost totally ignore the hardcore crowd (like they are doing now), then not only will they quickly lose their dedicated hardcore gamer fanbase, but the current casual gamers will start to get fed up with the lack of a challenge in Wii games as well.

Nintendo needs to start adding some level of difficulty and challenge into their games, and start paying a lot more attention to the hardcore crowd, otherwise, their recent success will dwindle fast and they'll end up in last place again. They need to understand that not all casual gamers are idiots who have never played a video game before and therefore require to play insanely easy and short games in order to get into gaming. They need to understand that casual gamers are and will become better at playing games now that they do it frequently, and that more challenging and more hardcore games are definately mandatory if they are to keep their fans and success. And if Nintendo do start doing this, and finally pay some decent attention to hardcore gamers, they need to remember what hardcore games should be like: long, difficult, and plenty of replay value.

At the moment, they've totally forgotten what difficulty in games is, because what they claim to be difficult and hardcore games are not at all what Nintendo says they are. They said Twilight Princess was difficult, and many think it's one of, if not the easiest Zelda game ever. The major problem they have is that they're trying to create games that please both audiences, and they're trying to do it without difficulty settings. There is no possible way to do this without disappointing one or both types of gamer, and Nintendo constantly fails to realise this.

Unless Nintendo start paying more attention to their hardcore fanbase, and start making games with the challenge and length that was present in the company's "glory days", then I honestly can't see Nintendo's success lasting much longer.

^ If anything that's actually more of an insult to Nintendo. But I'm not sure what your intent was with that old .gif.
